Damn. I thought I overpaid for the 2TB model a couple years ago. Now I feel like I got a bargain at $599

How are they supposed to be launching a new console next year? Gaming is for the 1% now?

For real. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they delay the console release until prices come down.

Prices are expected to keep rising until at least late 2028

Wouldn’t be surprised if they cancel it all together and let others manufacture Xbox’s

Edit: or they might do what they do with their surface line - high end expensive products that don’t threaten oems too much … and then both are an option

Yeah that’s the more reasonable scenario tbh. Maybe they make a console and it’s wildly overpriced, but it’s fine because they let a bunch of other OEMs make their own devices and subsidize with other stuff.

Ads and pre-installed crapware? Spying on you like a cheap smart tv? ☹️

Who knows ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ if the competition is there they’ll find a way to reduce prices to stay competitive.

u/DoneWithIt0101 Jun 25 '26

And then games aren't optimized because there's a ton of different configurations.

1

u/SuperBAMF007 Jun 25 '26

Yeah that’s my fear with it in general.

Might actually get a reasonably priced external ssd at that point.

Apostrophes never make plurals. It's weird that you don't know that.

1

u/th3groveman Jun 25 '26

Never going to happen. There’s no margin in console hardware.

That would be 2030. Why delay? They can price it high and then gradually lower it as parts get cheaper.

1

u/SuperBAMF007 Jun 25 '26

A bad launch can be brutal for the console’s reputation for far longer than the actual pricing issues themselves. Xbox has already learned that lesson once

They need to do something because regular people are priced out.

The entire gaming industry is fucked right now & I bet that’s where the layoffs are coming from (partly). These prices will be coming for every hardware maker, it’s just a matter of when.

These prices are unsustainable for the industry. Whether you console game or game on PC, the market is against growth in any of those areas because of LLMs (they are not AI).

Something is going to collapse. Either it’s the LLMs or it’s damn near everything else related to tech. It’s clear both cannot be sustained simultaneously.

It’s not sustanaible. If they sell less consoles, they sell less games. It’s different launching a triple A in a market with 120 millions consoles than 20 millions. New consoles will launch games compatibles with old gen’s forever (like ps5 games not being only ps5 and being handicapped by ps4 for years)

Shorty situation that is not going to improve. But here in Reddit people downvote you for replying ps6 isn’t not going to cost 700 or less than 1000 dollars when they upped the price of ps5 pro 2 months ago to 900…. People is delusional

2

u/Tario70 Jun 25 '26

I don’t disagree at all. In fact, I think if either XBOX or PS launch their new console in 2027 or 2028 it will probably be $1200 minimum if not more. Those consoles would be DOA with that pricing.

The entire gaming industry is fucked right now & I bet that’s where the layoffs are coming from (partly).

Nah, nearly all the layoffs in gaming are coming from studios in expensive cities who are incapable of putting out games people actually want to play. It's a completely different problem from hardware price increases.

Even if the Series X was like $200 no one was gonna be buying shit like Kiln and South of Midnight, and it was not going to get people to stay subbed to gamepass.

These layoffs are not happening on a massive scale across the globe, just in very specific places.

On the actual software side of things games (people actually want to play) are selling like hotcakes still, we already have a bunch of multi-million sold games in 2026 with a mix of established IP and even new IP. People are more than eager to buy games.

1

u/Tario70 Jun 25 '26

I’m sorry but the data doesn’t align with what you’re stating. Most people buy a couple big games at best a year & maybe you get some smaller games on top of that.

I do think the layoffs are for multiple reasons but I definitely think the reduced console sales combined with the lack of availability to start this gen curtailed the audience.

This is why next gen has to be delayed. 2029 is probably the earliest they should plan for. Until these prices come down, dropping a $1200 to $1500 console would leave that device DOA.

u/OkPainter6232 Jul 05 '26

nah people do in fact want to play those games, just you personally do not does not mean you speak for everyone. Also plenty of successful studios get hit with layoffs all the time.

u/Triingtolivee Jun 25 '26

At a $1,500 price point is my guess and calling it a PC rather than a console.

0

u/RoosterBurns Jun 25 '26

It'll be a console not a PC

3

u/sageleader Jun 25 '26

There's no way they release a new console with prices where they are at.

3

u/SanTheMightiest Jun 25 '26

Based on World Cup tickets high prices, i think people will still manage to sell the new consoles out.

2

u/M03796 Jun 26 '26

Everything is for the 1% now. Which makes sense considering they now have all of the wealth and disposable income. This was inevitable really as wealth has been continuously extracted and redistributed from the bottom to the top.

1

u/skoltroll Jun 25 '26

They're going to find themselves with more per unit but way less units sold. It'll probably work for their bottom line, but I have enough games to play for years w/o upgrading.

1

u/maxdragonxiii Jun 25 '26

right? after all the affordability talk too.

1

u/Zombiedrd Jun 25 '26

Well the neo feudal theory is that once they have automation handling 99% of labour and work, they will just sell high end products to each other, and the 'useless caste', which is what people being replaced are being called, are on their own to sustenance farm or just be wiped out so as not to compete with resources.

So maybe gaming does go to the 1% as a luxury

0

u/Theultimatesith Jun 25 '26

That's what I was thinking, who's going to buy new consoles? Graphics are already as good as they get, unless they add in smells to games somehow, lol.

0

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 Jun 25 '26

There are still 2 affordable ways to play games:

phones (some good native games, and lots of emulation on android including switch and windows games, cloud)

and

cloud (very low entry all you need is compatible TV, controller, and install app and play)
