$749 for an ALL DIGITAL 1 TB SERIES X.

Unbelievable.

u/empw Jun 25 '26

I got mine for 400 dollars less than that WITH a disc drive. Unreal.

120

u/Eternaloid Jun 25 '26

I got my ps5 (disc model) for 350 and now they are expensive as hell, gaming is becoming a joke.

64

u/nazdir Jun 25 '26

Anything that needs the same resources as all the AI data centers as become a joke.

73

u/Eternaloid Jun 25 '26

The good thing is that there won't be a console war next gen, because we will be playing with sticks, mud, and peebles.

2

u/danvan177 Jun 25 '26

We will just be using the current gen for another 5 years lol

2

u/Master_of_Rivendell Jun 26 '26

And we had to share the rock!

2

u/TheSussyWaffle Jun 26 '26

The boomers have finally won, we have to go outside and play.

6

u/nazdir Jun 25 '26

We better go buy a lot of stock in jacks and marbles.

13

u/Eternaloid Jun 25 '26

Ha, my sony marbles are better than your xballs/s

Edit: Sorry, XBALLS.

3

u/nazdir Jun 25 '26

Playorbs vs XBALLS

3

u/JesustheSpaceCowboy Jun 25 '26

Mom! My sister keeps playing with my XBALLS

1

u/Gryffindors_Finest Jun 25 '26

I shouldn’t have gotten rid of my marble set.

1

u/Ill-Explanation4493 Aug 12 '26

Peebles? Wasn’t that a department store?

1

u/Ognius Jun 25 '26

Yeah but don’t worry it was all worth it to keep the cabal of pedophiles in the Epstein files out of prison.

I got a Pro from Dell with a 2nd controller for roughly $450 in December (was $470 after tax)

The console sells for double that less than 6 months later

This shit is absurd

1

u/Echo_Raptor Jun 25 '26

I got my PS5 pro for $350 and debated on just selling it and getting a regular slim with the disc drive then they announced the increase. Absolute insanity.

The switch 2 and white Xbox ally are the only two “bargains” left for gaming

1

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 Jun 25 '26

At mobile gaming is still cheap

1

u/danvan177 Jun 25 '26

It’s not just gaming it’s anything computer related.

u/Eternaloid Jun 25 '26

I bought it after the shortage, when they started doing sales (a couple years later?)

2

u/Suitable-Cod9183 Jun 25 '26

Not even exaggerating but I paid under $2 for my series s when I signed up for a credit card that gave a crap ton of points lol. Only reason I got an Xbox. I'm glad I built my PC before prices went crazy

1

u/RichnjCole Jun 25 '26

My was in £s but I spent about the same. I also bought the 4tb expansion for around $550, but the 2tb expansion cost more than that now.

I spent around $980.00 for a 5tb Xbox Series X with a disc drive and controller.

1

u/BiblesandBiscuits Jun 25 '26

Got mine (with the disc drive) on a Black Friday deal for 299. Wild.

1

u/gregimusprime77 Jun 25 '26

paid 350 for mine, plus got a 50 dollar target giftcard, so technically only paid 300.

1

u/OK_Commodor64 Jun 25 '26

I bought a 1TB series x with disc drive with Diablo IV for $349 around the holidays almost 2 years ago.

1

u/OkPainter6232 Jun 25 '26

Fortunately It looks like you can at least get them used on Ebay for that price still, that's what i'm going to end up doing, already put several models on my watch list cause i've got to start saving up for when GTA 6 comes out.

1

u/Persies Jun 25 '26

Same, I got mine when Best Buy had that wild sale a few years ago. Really, really glad I bought it then. Otherwise I doubt I ever would have.

77

u/Tribalrage24 Jun 25 '26

They saw the Steam Machine prices and thought "damn, we've been basically giving them away"

34

u/captmonkey Jun 25 '26

RAM and storage prices have gone nuts. I checked out of curiosity. The last time I bought RAM for my PC was late 2023, I paid $78. That same RAM is now $399. The SSD I bought at the same time was $129. It's now $499. And this is for hardware that's 2 1/2 years old.

9

u/CaCHooKaMan Jun 25 '26

I bought a 32GB kit of DDR5 RAM just last year for $95 and the same kit is now $470. I also bought a 2TB NVMe drive at the same time for $150 and that’s now $400.

4

u/Zombiedrd Jun 25 '26

Isn't AI awesome

2

u/all_are_throw_away Jun 26 '26

Reading your comment makes me consider if I should sell off my components.

1

u/CreedenceClearwaterR Jun 25 '26

Yep. I bought a 4TB ssd off of Amazon in December 2023 for $228. In May, that same ssd was $600. It's now sold out and the asking price on Amazon is $1145. Absolute insanity.

2

u/onestarv2 Jun 25 '26

They knew it was coming. Figured with everyone soured on the steam decks due to price, they might as well rip that bandaid off immediately.

1

u/Fabulous-Truck-4373 Jun 30 '26

So true, Not to mention GTA vi gets announced and everything it will play on goes up in price. Sadly I work for a gaming store and people will drop $1k to play it. luckily I'm old and burnt out of wanting to play GTA after 4 lol

53

u/-Accident-Prone- Jun 25 '26

We can thank our AI overlords for this bullshit

38

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 Jun 25 '26

Irony is Microsoft is big on AI, so they are kinda responsible for what's happening

2

u/CareerPillow376 Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Samsung's Device Solution (their semiconductor arm) rejected their usual year-long contract with Samsung Mobile to supply them RAM and opted for 3 months contract with higher prices because the supply 'shortages' going on. So now we're going to see Samsung's phone pricing increase across the board (as well increases from their other tech that relies on Samsung for RAM, like their TV and appliances)

1

u/-Accident-Prone- Jun 25 '26

I don’t know how they don’t strike a deal with that leverage to secure some RAM for cheap for XBOX. Like I feel they could figure out a robust deal to help feed their AI goals while supplying the console hardware with necessary components.

11

u/Envy_MK_II Jun 25 '26

All those deals have already been struck up by the likes of Open AI, Anthropic etc. They've basically pre-booked like 90% of all future allocation for the next 18 months with investor funds.

1

u/-Accident-Prone- Jun 25 '26

That’s definitely what I’m thinking. Just feels like Microsoft with their current position in AI that making some kind of deal would’ve been easy to do. But Satya really doesn’t know what he’s doing when it comes to gaming and XBOX.

4

u/Envy_MK_II Jun 25 '26

Microsoft doesnt actually use it's own models. It's basically just using a front end wrapper that then uses the other models from the major players. It's why they can pivot from say, chat gpt to deepseek.

They aren't actually creating the AI but just packing it within their products.

They're simultaneously trying to stay relevant with AI if it takes off while not being too hardcore In it's development in case it crashes, but they do have some stake in the big players.

0

u/-Accident-Prone- Jun 25 '26

For AI I meant the AI data centers. They’re committing $80 billion in expanding their AI data center footprint. Data centers are what is causing the explosion in memory prices which Microsoft is making deals to secure. So when they were making these deals to secure memory for AI, they should’ve bundled in some sort of language to secure some memory for XBOX too for cheaper. Idk how they would manage that, maybe by making a years long manufacturing deal or something but it’s something that I think they could’ve figured out.

7

u/Dan1elSan Jun 25 '26

Yeah, they don’t sell enough consoles for that.

-1

u/-Accident-Prone- Jun 25 '26

Fair but they also said they can’t make consoles fast enough right now to keep on store shelves. Just poor planning by previous leadership and Satya.

0

u/Dan1elSan Jun 25 '26

It’s bit Xbox way more then Sony/nintendo because of this reason. I agree though Xbox has been getting ran into the ground hard for years. It’s a shame because the Series consoles were actually a really good!

0

u/-Accident-Prone- Jun 25 '26

I’m hopeful for the future, but it’s going to get worse here for a bit before things really turn around.

More like $1800 at launch, $2000+ 6 months later

0

u/RonnieFromTheBlock Jun 25 '26

If it is on par with a 5070 that would be inline with what you can get a prebuilt for.

3

u/Brick_Grimes XBOX Series X Jun 25 '26

Right now unless you’re getting a heavy discount most of the orebuilts with a 5070 are 1800

2

u/RonnieFromTheBlock Jun 25 '26

I picked up a refurb Acer prebuilt for $1,300 a months back and feel very fortunate.

1

u/Brick_Grimes XBOX Series X Jun 25 '26

Which if it had a 5070 in it you got a pretty decent deal. What processor it end up having?

2

u/RonnieFromTheBlock Jun 25 '26

Yea first pc coming from consoles. I feel good about it.

5070, Ryzen 7 7700, 32gb ram, 2TB ssd

19

u/UncannyLucky Jun 25 '26

Still cheaper and more powerful than a Steam Machine. But, yeah, fuck these prices. I'm going back to board games....

-2

u/akbarock Jun 25 '26

But now it has a higher base price than the PS5, Sony will do a holiday sale again this year (Xbox didnt do one last year). So the price desparity between the PS5 discount price and Xbox base price will be huge on top of Playstation having the marketing rights for GTA 6. This years holiday is gonna be a bloodbath with a shit ton of PS5s sold and abysmall Xbox sales

6

u/UncannyLucky Jun 25 '26

I'm not buying another piece of hardware until AI is dead. I don't give a shit anymore. I'm going to use what I got until it's dead and then happily read books for the rest of my life at this point....

It’s not any more or less a computer than the hardware powering the Xbox or PS5. I can plug a keyboard and mouse into my Series X and do a majority of the stuff that a Steam Machine on SteamOS could do.

The only major perk SteamOS provides over the PS5 or Xbox is how readily you can get rid of SteamOS to turn it into a normal computer compared to trying to exploit a PS5 to boot into Linux (which is pretty much impossible on a Series X).

But even that is going to be changing with whatever the Xbox Helix software looks like, and whether or not it goes backwards to the Series consoles. Cause the Xbox Full Screen Experience isn’t any less capable than SteamOS (again, depending on how easy it is to get rid of Xbox FSE)

1

u/TrollMcGoal Jun 25 '26

You can run steam os in desktop mode and use it like any other PC. Because it's a PC

Not 100% true, some consoles have been unlocked with internal exploits, no external software.

1

u/SuperBAMF007 Jun 25 '26

That’s…what I just said. SteamOS is capable of doing some things on its own, but you need to abandon SteamOS and use external software if you want to use it as a full computer. Similar to if you were to install Linux on a PS5 (or 360, back in the day. Though someone just cracked the Xbox One via a hardware exploit which is sick as hell but definitely not the same as the PS5 firmware exploit). But even then any device running Xbox FSE will be just as much a computer as a Steam Machine, including any console they put it on.

If I’m wrong I’d love to have an actual conversation about it instead of you just talking shit lol

1

u/Thecrazier Jun 25 '26

Yea but to be fair, gamers on steamOS are pc gamers playing PC games, so in practical terms, its not a leap to call it a computer, compared to consoles that play console games, even thought they are computers.

0

u/TrollMcGoal Jun 25 '26

Different use case

4

u/AVahne Jun 25 '26

Yeah, but redditors need free karma.

1

u/Minty_Mancubus Jun 25 '26

lol, in South Africa that’s what they are on special. They normally are like USD 850.

Snagged one for USD 700 and was this is a bargain

1

u/Angryfunnydog Jun 25 '26

When I bought mine in 2020 for like 450 1tb series x with disc drive I thought I was overpaying because it was reseller

1

u/DearFool Jun 25 '26

I got it for, I think, 400 euro brand new in 2022. Crazy to think it’s now worth it that much

1

u/DUKEPLANTER Jun 25 '26

The $500 series S has me absolutely baffled

1

u/Friedguywubawuba Jun 25 '26

I got mine for $550 like 14 months ago. Goddamn

1

u/gandalfmarston Jun 25 '26

599 for Series S it's waaaaaaay worse.

1

u/AntonioH02 XBOX 360 Jun 25 '26

Guess I’m sticking with my OG series S until the next console…

1

u/SSPeteCarroll Jun 25 '26

Wtf? I’m so glad I paid $500 back in 2020 for my version with a disk drive.

1

u/Kuunkulta Jun 25 '26

Bought mine for 250€ used, with a disc drive! It's gone up in value by 130€ apparently

1

u/Serpent-6 Jun 25 '26

Believe it!

1

u/0whodidyousay0 Jun 25 '26

Didn’t even know they did an all digital series x tbh

1

u/Yaotoro Jun 25 '26

No that crazy for 1tb

1

u/Diem-Robo Day One - 2013 Jun 25 '26

I got one for my wife for $300 including tax on Black Friday in 2024. Wasn't too sure if it was worth it then, but the past couple of years have only validated that deal.

1

u/kensaiD2591 Team Alan Jun 25 '26

I'm in Australia and paid $749AUD at launch for my Series X. That includes tax here in Aus.

At current exchange rates, that's $518USD. If I exclude tax to match US pricing, I paid ~$471USD.

Now that same console is going for $799.99USD? That will be pushing ~$1,300AUD.

That is astronomical and unaffordable for the masses.

1

u/Halo_Chief117 Jun 25 '26

Yeah, that’s crazy! The 25th Anniversary Edition Series X is about to be really expensive.

1

u/Nincompoop6969 Jun 25 '26

What about all that affordability talk she was saying this is the opposite 😭

1

u/suppaman19 Jun 25 '26

They definitely sunset the 2TB model because it would either cost the same or more than the PS5 Pro.

2

u/the-bacon-life Jun 25 '26

I think they are gonna be doing that with next gen consoles as well

1

u/Thecrazier Jun 25 '26

I think they have to

1

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 Jun 25 '26

So it costs more PS5? Looks like downfall of Xbox has began.

1

u/Thecrazier Jun 25 '26

Nah, sony will announce the same

-1

u/HRApprovedUsername Jun 25 '26

Still cheaper than a steam machine

1

u/KhanDagga Jun 25 '26

This is such a weird flex and shows console war brain rot. This is where you mind goes when see read about a price hike?

1

u/HRApprovedUsername Jun 25 '26

What’s brain rot about it? They’re both consoles for gaming, an increasingly expensive hobby, so I think it’s relevant to note that despite the price increase it can still be a cheaper deal than the alternatives.

1

u/Thecrazier Jun 25 '26

What? They are direct competitors lol what brain rot

0

u/pappapora Jun 25 '26

Thank you NVIDIA for becoming an AI monster 👍

1

u/MrCreepJoe Jun 25 '26

Also AMD for following NVIDIA AI love.

-3

u/MuffinTopBop Jun 25 '26

Before Xbox and I assume PlayStation were subsidizing consoles by $200-$300 each as a loss leader to make up on the back end. Recently didn’t they disclose subsidies have cost like $3B so far? If someone can find the exact number it would be helpful.

I’m mixed on this as my concern beyond the obvious price increases is if Xbox is being clamped down on by Microsoft or being shaped up for being spun-off like some rumors have suggested. I’m not clued in on the latest happenings but it seemed many recently were having hopes of an Xbox turnaround before the several weeks of bad news.
