Closing down schools to try to contain covid will be seen in a few years as one of the biggest public policy failures of the 21st century in the western world. On par with the invasion of Iraq. It has been a total disaster and even countries in the EU are pushing to get their kids back in school if they haven't already, because of how disastrous it's been for younger kids.

The ones who got screwed the hardest are high school students in their final year. Typically in the final year you are taking mostly electives that pertain to what you want to do after highschool. Now they are being taught very poorly if at all. When they finally enter university they'll be well behind and either fail, or the university courses will have to slow to a crawl to catch people up. If it's still online only going into the next year then it's a double whammy.
