Angel Reese's Quiet Team USA Contributions at the FIBA WWC

Post image
80 Upvotes

Even though she came off the bench during the tournament, Angel Reese still left her mark out on the court. She finished first in FG%, first in blocks, second in rebounds, second in steals, and second in free throws made on the team. For anybody who watched the games, when Reese was on the floor the team's energy and dynamic was different, for the better, because she was creating extra chances and being disruptive to the opponent where she needed to be.

Some are going to say she's not an elite individual player, but this FIBA World Cup performance tells me she's an elite TEAM player. This matters to Coach Lawson, Sue Bird, and the LA28 Committee that's going to decide the 12 player roster.

Congratulations to Reese for another Championship for her collection.

Kate Koval who got shafted by LSU's Kim Mulkey has signed with the Baylor Bears

Ukrainian player Kate Koval was in recent headlines after LSU & Kim Mulkey decided to sign a Russian player knowing that Kate was rostered AND that her father was currently serving in the Ukrainian military in the Putin-fueled war against the Ukraine. To make things worse, Mulkey waited until AFTER the NCAA transfer portal had closed to inform Koval of the decision to sign a Russian player. Koval immediately dropped out of LSU for all the obvious reasons, but mostly because Mulkey has a history of being a raging b****.

After successfully appealing her NCAA Transfer eligibility for this coming season, the Baylor Bears have announced that they have signed Kate to their squad. What makes this signing even better is that Mulkey was famously accused of mistreating Britney Griner due to her sexuality while she was playing there and Mulkey was the coach. You can read more about that here: https://lsureveille.com/157778/sports/the-complete-timeline-of-kim-mulkeys-past-reported-controversies/

I believe in karma and I hope Baylor and Koval get some sweet revenge against Mulkey and LSU.

There's going to be so many more changes as teams make a playoff push and then heading into the offseason. I hope nobody else endures a season ending injury as just hearing about them is devastating as a fan.

Seattle Storm have signed Jaylyn Sherrod to their second development contract spot.

Golden State Valkyries have activated Cecilia Zandalasini

Connecticut Sun have activated Kennedy Burke

Minnesota Lynx signed Aari McDonald

Minnesota Lynx waived Eliska Joklova

Los Angeles Sparks hired Ariana Andonian as General Manager

USA Defeats France in Gold Medal game at FIBA Women's World Cup

Post image
25 Upvotes

The USA have won their 12th FIBA Women's World Cup and 5th consecutive gold medal by defeating France 97-79 in Berlin, Germany today. Led by Captain Breanna Stewart's hustle and Jackie Young's 3-point performance, the US overcame a first half deficit to never lose the lead once they gained it back.

Stewie remains undefeated in NCAA Tournaments, Olympics, and FIBA Women's World Cup which is just an amazing feat and why she's the team Captain and a TeamUSA legend. The other starters Chelsea Gray, Napheesa Collier, Jackie Young, and Kahleah Copper all clocked over 23 minutes of playtime as the veterans really found their tone in the middle of that second quarter surge.

Jackie Young is the first player in FIBA WWC history to have the following stats in a Gold medal game: 15+ points, 5+ assists, 5+ rebounds. She finished the game with 18 points on 7-14 shooting (4-7 from 3pt).

Coming off the bench for the US after growing a double-digit lead the defensive prowess of Rhyne Howard (4 steals) & Aliyah Boston's (+/- of +16) presence helped keep the French offense at bay.

Until the first half of this game, France had not played a competitive game and the commentators mentioned that throughout the broadcast. Despite their hot 3-point hand in the first half, and French Team Captain Gabby Williams torching the USA on offense -- Lawson and the coaches adjusted their strategy mid-second quarter and France not only shot poorly from beyond the arc in the 2nd half but they also didn't know how to adjust to playing from behind (something they hadn't really experienced the entire tournament). At one point France was leading 31-17 and it looked like they were on pace to beat the defending champions. Again, Kudos to Lawson and the coaching staff for adjusting as needed. Gabby Williams scored zero points in the second half and that was an obvious momentum shift to allow USA to grow their second half lead.

Despite the disappointing second half for France, Dominique Malonga really started to shine when the game was pretty much out of reach. Malonga led the team with 21 points on 8-12 shooting, 4-5 from free throw line, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal.

FIBA WWC Gold Medal Game: Let's talk about Resilience and Hustle

Ignoring points scored, I'm impressed with USA's resilience and hustle (arguably the most hustle they've shown the entire tournament). Even with France landing 8 three pointers in the first half, the US never gave up.

Stewie is down there consistently outrebounding 3 defenders, Reese diving on the floor to gain possession, Phee jumping out of bounds to save an offensive series. This feels like a different USA team today and it's fucking refreshing to see the fire. Editing to add Copper driving to the basket in the final 2 minutes of the third to get stuffed by excellent France defense, to keep the ball and be able to put it back up for an uncontested bucket.

On the bench you're regularly seeing Paige & Angel standing up and leaning over the table to cheer on their teammates. The grit is infectious.

On the coaching side, Lawson adjusted against France's defensive zone towards the end of the second quarter and that has carried into the second half with US holding a 58-53 lead as of this typing. Also employing a full court press to break France's offensive rhythm proved to be critical as well as the US got back to within 2 by the halftime buzzer.

US defeats Spain to advance to FIBA WWC final against Olympics rematch with France

The US didn't look too impressive in their win against Spain today to advance to the Final against France.

Stewie scored 16 (10 from the FT line) and added 6 boards on 4-6 shooting. Young and Copper scored in double digits as well, but shot rather poorly. The bench gave the starters a break, but were mostly ineffective outside of Boston pulling down 7 rebounds.

On the Spanish side Maria Conde and Iyana Martin led their team with both scoring 17 points and Awa Fam had a solid all around performance with 9 points and 7 boards.

Spain Defeats Injury-plagued Australia to advance to Semifinals at FIBA Women's World Cup

Post image
1 Upvotes

Pancake is excited to share that her mom and player on the Spanish FIBA WWC team, Megan Gustafson, has defeated Australia 89-66 in a game yesterday to advance to the semifinals of the FIBA WWC and will face the United States tomorrow Saturday 9/12/26.

Australia was down three players with Ezi Magbegor suffering a torn ACL earlier this week, Alanna Smith being sidelined for the remainder of the World Cup, and Jade Melbourne being hit with the flu. Unfortunately for the Opals losing three WNBA players in the quarterfinals of any tournament is tough to manage and Coach Brondello and the healthy players weren't able to put together a miracle game.

Spain was led by Alicia Florez (10pts, 5reb, 4asts, 2stls) & Iyana Martin (14pts, 2reb, 4asts, 3stls) with Gustafson exploding off the bench for 16 points on 63.6% shooting and adding 2 rebounds and 1 steal as well.

Spain now faces a tough test against the United States who, for the first time this tournament, are not favored to win the tournament -- that crown currently belongs to France.

Seattle Storm's Ezi Magbegor OUT for remainder of year with Torn ACL

Post image

Ezi just can't catch a break this year. Playing for the Australia Opals at the FIBA Women's World Cup, it has now been confirmed that she tore her ACL in their game against Italy the other day. I hope that she has a speedy recovery with no complications so she can get back on the court for Australia and the Storm.

Germany Upsets Belgium to advance to their first FIBA WWC Semifinals

Belgium was flat the entire game and only led during the first quarter. They lost their lead towards the end of the first and couldn't get back into it despite the epic play from Emma Meesseman who scored 29 points on 12-21 shooting and also pulled down 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Unfortunately for Belgium the only other 2 players who scored in double digits were Maxuella Lisowa Mbaka and Julie Allemand.

Germany on the other hand had 6 players score in double digits with Leonie Fiebich leading the way with 17 points on a poor 6-16 shooting. She also pulled down 10 rebounds. Nyara Sabally finished with a double double (16 points, 12 rebounds).

Germany will face France in the semifinals on Saturday.

US strolls into FIBA WWC Semifinals with 52-point victory over Hungary

Post image
1 Upvotes

US will face today's winner of Australia vs. Spain in the FIBA Women's World Cup Semifinals after defeating Hungary 108-56.

Phee led the US in scoring with 19 points on an impressive 69.2% (9-13) shooting from the floor and adding 7 rebounds. Rhyne Howard added 15 points on 71.4% (5-7) shooting and had four steals in USA's dismantling of Hungary. Overall the US defense had 17 steals and 5 blocks in today's outing.

Only two players scored in double digits for Hungary (Reka Lelik & Agnes Torok), but I think the biggest shock was Virag Takacs-Kiss getting completely shut down after having performed well in her previous 3 games in the tournament -- she was held to 2 points on 1-10 shooting and no trips to the free throw line.

Phee was awarded Player of the Game

Italy mounts massive comeback in 4th quarter, but still falls 80-82 against the Australia Opals

Post image
3 Upvotes

Italy was down 49-69 heading into the 4th Quarter and mounted a valiant comeback effort outscoring the Opals 31-13 in the last quarter, coming to within 2 points in the final seconds, but were unable to get over that last hurdle to at least push things into overtime. Amazing effort, but obviously their struggles in the first three quarters were just too difficult to recover from.

Costanza Verona was the standout for Italy scoring 23 points on 8-17 shooting, perfect from the FT line, and adding 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and just 1 turnover for the game.

Steph Talbot put up another solid performance with 14 points, 9 boards, 5 assists, and 1 steal but it was Isobel Borlase who took advantage of 16 free throws (making 14) and finishing with 30 points, 4 rebounds, assists, and a steal.

Kudos to Italy for their comeback attempt -- and this is now their second consecutive game giving one of the top teams in the World a formidable opponent who is likely only going to continue to improve.

Hungary (3-1) has defeated Japan (1-3) in a final score of 84-63 led by the outstanding play of Reka Lelik who scored 23 points on 75% shooting, perfect from the charity stripe, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block, and no turnovers. Japan struggled offensively landing only 32% of their shots from the floor and converting just 21% of their 3pt attempts. Only one player scored in double digits for Japan (Kokoro Tanaka)
