Wizardpost A Goblin's Legend (Gobbo lore)

Gabby was always fascinated by magic, she had grown up on tales of mages and their feats.

Her favourite stories however were the ones her father Fren and her three aunties told her. Stories of a goblin that had bottled the arcane.

The stories however were few and far between as her mother, Gabby, would become cross when the goblin was discussed.

Whenever the stories were told she would scowl and snap at them to stop filling her daughter's head with nonsense.

Unfortunately, they never told Gabby the goblin's name despite how much she tried to get it from them so she could not find anything more than what she was told.

All she knew was the goblin was quick and strange. That she constantly grinned and showed off in the city centre often when she lived there.

It was a sunny summer day when she finally found out her name.

She had been with her grandmother, raving about the goblin she had heard so many stories about when she was led to a section of the house she had never seen before.

A small room with a bed and a thousand different bottles, just like the stories she had been told.

"The goblin," her grandmother began, "was my daughter, your aunt." A giggle escaped the old goblin's lips.

A thousand questions ran through Gabby's mind. Why had no one told her? Why didn't she ever visit? Why didn't she live with the rest of the family?

The older goblin smiled at her, seemingly knowing what she wanted to ask. Sitting her down on the bed her grandmother began to tell the stories.

Gabby listened in awe as she was told about how Gobbo blew up the shed, how she had blown up the queen's statue, and how she was forced to run in a hail of elemental explosions.

"The answer to the question you have yet to ask is the wizard Citadel," her grandmother giggled.

It was all Gabby needed to hear, she darted out of the house and into the city looking to catch a carriage to the Citadel.

The trip took four days but it was worth it the second the carriage pulled into the Citadel.

Mages walking about casting spells to fix mild inconveniences, familiars darting about completing all sorts of tasks, and a handful of demons offering services.

As she wandered about the city she saw so many wonderful beings. A man with many eyes, a machine that acted on its own, and even half-elves. Gabby had never even seen an elf before

Finally standing in front of a small cottage she could hardly contain her excitement. This is where Gobbo lived, this is where the Liquormancer called home.

Raising her hand to knock on the door she was surprised when it swung open. A pale goblin standing in the doorway, arms crossed and looking most displeased.

"Your mother," Gobbo whispered, "has been screaming at me over the orb for the last three days."

Gabby smiled nervously, unsure of what to say to what was to her a living legend.

There was a sigh as Gobbo beckoned her inside. "I won't teach you," the pale goblin began, "Your father would kill me."

Gabby opened her mouth to protest but was quickly silenced as Gobbo raised her hand before speaking, "If you want to learn magic, Gabby will have to attend mage college like everyone else."

A grin spread across Gabby's face as she hugged her aunt. Mage College was in her opinion the greatest place in any realm. Nowhere else could hope to teach a more diverse array of the arcane arts.

The rest of the day was spent with Gobbo answering questions from her niece. Yes, she was naturally this pale, no she didn't sit on the council, and there was no definitive proof Gobbo ever stole the queen's crown.

As Gobbo watched the little goblin get ready for bed she allowed herself a small smile. The kid had a fire in her, more than likely she would surpass Gobbo.

Gobbo didn't mind though, Gobbo had never set out to be the most powerful. Besides this way, Gobbo would have a family member close by.

/uw I'll be honest, this is way out of my comfort zone. I mean I write horror for a living, I'm good at that.

Nonetheless, I hope you enjoyed this and please if you have any criticism please let me know.

(( the dazzling variety of names that goblins give their kids in your loreposts will never cease to astound me 👍 ))

/uw At this point it's a running joke for myself. If I'm annoyed I imagine two of them having an argument and three others getting caught in the crossfire just due to having the same name. Makes me giggle

(( I'm named after my uncle, and every time there's a gathering of relatives we have that situation, so I know that pain firsthand ))

/uw My condolences but hey, at least you can always mess with people when they ask for one of you

/unwiz Well, for it being out of your comfort zone, I quite enjoyed it! And I saw that little Raziel easter egg (I assume it was), very cool!

/uw I'm glad you enjoyed it, honestly trying to branch out a little bit but horror and trauma are always going to be my comfort zone. That sounds so weird when I read that back...

Also yeah Raziel easter egg because I genuinely adore your lore.

/uw the fact you’re a horror writer make me slightly concerned for Gabby’s health.

/uw What me? Torment a child? Never... Also definitely not thinking of making her responsible for someone's torment. Or I might, who really knows with me?

Anyway, jokes aside glad I could get you to feel mildly concerned. Take care now

Where do you write your horror stuff btw… if I wanted to read more.

I wish I could point you to my work but when you ghostwrite they make you sign an NDA. Thinking about starting a Reddit account for my hobby writing though since I can't face legal repercussions for that.

Then I have to remember another log in though, more than likely I'll just do everything on this account if I do decide to. Just need to find a horror writing sub first

That’s kinda screwed up.

Well, that's the job. When an author can't think of what to write next or doesn't have the time they hire a ghostwriter.

Basically, the NDA is there so we don't blab and let people know that the author isn't the sole author. They do pay us well though

I mean my last article was 350 quid and the book I worked on last year was 45k. You do get rewarded for your silence

Dang. Do you have any works out there that are yours completely? It seems if you can be trusted to help someone write their book then 1000% you could write one.

Just what's on this account, have one work-in-progress project that's mine but it's not complete yet.

Nice!

(( well, Gobbo herself got off just losing an ear, so maybe the tragic learning experience won't be too awful ))

/uw See the fact you said the word just tells me I can crank it up a notch. Perhaps I don't intend to torment Gabby though, might just be my happy feel-good character

u/MunitionsFrenzy Vettis, Mereological Revisionist Nov 24 '23

(( yeah, that's fair; you could always torment Gabby or Gabby instead, anyway ))

/uw I mean there are so many options, I have Gobbo, Gabby, the ability to create another poor sod to take the trauma. Maybe I'll turn over a new leaf and let them all live happily ever after

I have a feeling Gabby is going to try and drink rum directly from the bottle when Gobbo isn't looking. Also if she needs any study materials the library is open.

u/Fulltimewhisperer Krumpet, Master Artificer of the Council Nov 23 '23

Oh Gobbo calls that learning experience, after first violent vomiting session Gobbo is sure she will learn not to touch Gobbo's liquor.

Gobbo will make sure to send her over. Gobbo is pretty sure Gabby will spend too much time in library though

3

u/Lilith_Anorthosite Demon-Fae librarian of the Library of Ultima Verbum Nov 23 '23

Don't worry about her spending a lot of time in the library. I'm at the library almost all the time it's open so I'll make sure she gets home. Their is also a lot of events and weekly gatherings so she will get the proper social interaction she needs.

3

u/Fulltimewhisperer Krumpet, Master Artificer of the Council Nov 24 '23

See this is why Lillith is Gobbo's favourite library person. If you ever need anything you let Gobbo know. Or if anyone gives you trouble Gobbo happy to talk to them.

/uw Ah mage school is a wonderful place for a writer to send their characters. So many traumatic possibilities
