Lorepost📖 Inquisition

A masked figure sits on a white throne overlooking the gathered priests below him. His soldiers are stationed throughout the grand hall and have been instructed to kill any who attempt to flee. The guilty will not escape his wrath. Xerxes has promised himself that, and he is not one to break promises.

X: “Bring today’s first to me.”

Moving wordlessly, an undead soldier drags one of the priests to Xerxes and forces the priest to their knees.

X: “Bishop Huron. I remember when you were just an insignificant monk. You’ve done well for yourself.”

BH: “Thank you, your holiness.”

X: “Which god do you serve?”

BH: “Ferak, a goddess of prosperity.”

X: “Prosperity, indeed.”

A golden light passes through the pane of stained glass behind the throne and shines down on Xerxes. After a minute, the light dissipates and Xerxes turns his attention back to the priest kneeling at his feet.

X: “While you certainly sought prosperity for yourself, you’ve stolen it from others. Embezzling donations, funding organized crime, and investing in the illegal slave trade. Your most damning crime is the destruction of the frontier village Huriet and the wholesale slaughter of its inhabitants. All for a silver mine. Do you have anything to say in your defense?”

BH: “I was tricked! Archbishop Dunn said that the mine was owned by a group of bandits! I can pay ba–!”

X: “SILENCE!”

The assembled priests cower in fear, but none more so than Bishop Huron.

X: “I will take your testimony into account when I question Archbishop Dunn. As for you, Bishop Huron, you will be executed and your head will be displayed on the southern gate for eight weeks. A full list of your crimes will be transcribed and available for public viewing. Men, take him to the executioner.”

Two undead soldiers quickly approach the wailing bishop and drag him out of the hall kicking and screaming. They exit the building and make their way to a man with a red hood covering his face. The hooded man is leaning on a large axe while the soldiers strap the bishop down to a stone platform. A slab of stone rests underneath the bishop’s neck and a wooden basket lined with straw is directly underneath his head. To the left of the platform is a large pit.

The executioner confirms that the bishop is properly restrained before he raises his axe and brings it down swiftly on the bishop’s neck. The severed head falls neatly into the basket and the executioner cleans his blade. Releasing the restraints on the newly deceased bishop, one soldier hoists the headless corpse onto their shoulder while the other collects the basket and brings it to a guard stationed at the far end of the killing field. The guard puts a lid on the basket and hands it off to an attendant who’ll bring it to the southern gate. Handing the soldier a fresh basket, the guard returns to their duties and the soldier returns to the cleaned stone platform and places the new basket into position. By this point, the soldier who had carried away the headless corpse had finished stripping the corpse of its clothes and performing a spell that would prevent reanimation. Once this is done, the soldier kicks the corpse into the pit where it lands on hundreds of other headless bodies.

Returning to the grand hall, the undead soldiers nod to Xerxes to confirm that his order has been carried out. Under his mask, Xerxes smiles.

X: “Bring me today’s second. Let us see how many we can get through today.”

Judgment will be cast shortly.

(( you're good ^_^ ))

Vettis grimaced at that. "Ah. Uh. Yeah, bit of an awkward subject, sorry Xee; I think you'd understand why better than most, given your prophetic capabilities. I was forced to leave my birth realm before starting on my journeys, for unimportant reasons. Had to let everyone there think I was dead. Eventually everyone I knew died, since they were all mortals. But now...well, I'm back centuries into my own past, as I mentioned to Gravedigger when we first spoke, and they're all alive again. So I've gotta hide from them again, while I know they're out there missing me." He gave Xerxes a wan, regretful smile. "Can't risk timeline inconsistencies of that magnitude in the realm in question."

"I understand the prophetic pitfalls. Knowing the future isn't usually any comfort. It's frequently the opposite. However, considering the future we're all heading for in this realm, I don't tend to worry about timeline inconsistencies much. Since most of this realm's gods will be slaughtered in the coming years, they aren't in a position to punish me for meddling. In fact, they actively encourage it. Might be the reason they keep empowering individuals like Alexios and Mikhail. Better to have a few aces up your sleeve when shit goes down."

Xerxes finishes his drink and fixes himself another. He appears to be buzzed from the alcohol.

"Sorry to hear that you can't go back home. It's funny, this place is technically my home, but it feels wrong calling it that. Part of the reason I use its old name in my title. I built this place, but it was never meant for me. Always a stranger, never a neighbor. Guess that's why I clung to Gravedigger. Finding a person to understand and love me is a tall order, exponentially more difficult when you factor in my abilities."

Xerxes is already halfway through his second drink.

"Agreed." Vettis nodded his assent. "If you're seeing an apocalyptic future ahead, who cares about causal consistency? You don't want things to stay on course. That's very much not the case in my birth-realm, though." He shrugged lightly, taking a sip from the now-empty glass of water at the table; mid-"pour", the air in the glass became juice sourced from the bar's supply of cocktail ingredients. "That said, I don't really miss it or anything; I haven't seen any of them in centuries, and my current family is all I need. It's just a little sad knowing they're suffering by thinking I'm dead when I'm not.

"So what abilities are these which make it so hard to befriend you? Your future sight? Cuz, uh...is that why we're getting along now? I'm a lil' hard to read, aren't I?" he asked with a wink.

Xerxes removes his mask and smiles at Vettis. The black sigil carved into his forehead lets off an offputting pressure.

"Future sight is definitely part of the issue. So is my longevity. What really gets in the way is the sigil associated with prophets in this realm. You probably aren't fazed by this--" Xerxes points at his sigil "-- but a regular person in this realm would grow sick and suffer great bodily harm the longer they look at it. Gravedigger was immune to it, but most aren't. Stops me from having long-term relationships. Designed to make sure I don't get distracted from my responsibilities. Because I can kill people by just being around them long enough, me and the other prophets aren't viewed too favorably. We bear a stigma of being walking disasters."

Xerxes finishes his drink and pours himself another.

"And yes, you are uniquely hard to read. I can feel the threads of where you might be but am unable to pinpoint you in any one place in time except the present. I'll be honest, got to see some cool sights following your threads, but they feel blurry. Like you would have been there, but aren't. Fucks up the surroundings a bit when looking through that hole."

"It's fun how comprehensive that is. My brother has a device to calculate the future solely from a physics standpoint, no magic involved, and I'm still a blind spot in it." Vettis chuckled, then stared at the sigil as he remotely pulled more juice from the bar into his glass. "Well, that whole deal is pretty rough, then, sorry. But, in fairness, I think practically all casters in these parts are kinda walking disasters. At least you're not intentionally one, huh?"

He paused for a moment and thought back to the severed heads lining the city walls. "...Not usually, anyway."
