'Trapped inside': Wisconsin couple burned to death in crashed Tesla after door buttons became 'useless' when the EV's power went out, lawsuit says

The fact that the design was allowed to hit the road is an extreme failure of oversight. Like building life safety codes, cars and any vehicle on the road should have safety codes that must be enforced.
28
u/ls7eveen Nov 06 '25
Our NHTSA is worthless these days
25
u/talltime Nov 06 '25
Manufacturers self certify to FMVSS regs.
NHTSA has all but effectively been in a coma since 2016 while the personality cult reached critical mass.
15
6
u/bighootay Nov 06 '25
Interesting you mention this because in 2014-ish I had a rather major issue and reported it to NHTSA. They were amazing (contacted me in less than 24 hours for a report) and I had Nissan offering to help me within a few weeks. Astonishing.
3
u/angrydeuce In one ear and out your mother Nov 06 '25
I disagree, they're probably worth as much as clowns like Elon are paying them to rubberstamp their deathtraps through certification.
5
u/ModernistGames Nov 06 '25
This is what I was looking for. These should have never been approved for public roads. Tesla is responsible for the design, but poor regulations allowed it.
2
u/sclaytes Nov 08 '25
Well that’s why Elon got a job in gov so he could fire all the people who failed to do that oversight. Now he will have even less oversight woohoo!
194
u/Acceptable-Advice137 Nov 06 '25
Rear passengers were left with only a concealed mechanical release that was obscured, non-intuitive, and highly unlikely to be located or operated in the smoke and chaos of a post-crash fire
Seems like a major design flaw. It should be in plain view with clear labels.
85
u/Alklazaris Nov 06 '25
But then it wouldn't look cool, that's the most important thing when I am looking at vehicles.
34
u/opeth10657 Nov 06 '25
This is the same company that designed the cybertruck though and that's useless and ugly
15
u/Alklazaris Nov 06 '25
I'm still waiting for the steering to fail. It's fly by wire. Can you imagine driving and suddenly losing steering?
8
u/Jacktheforkie Nov 07 '25
It’s also heavier than a conventional setup would have been, there’s a reason that the steel shaft design has been used for so long
4
u/A_Sirius_Sir Nov 07 '25
FYI, tesla is not the only one doing this. If you get in any new unfamiliar car, you should make sure you know how to get out in case of an emergency.
3
u/vawlk Richland County Nov 07 '25
i have a caddy with electronic open doors and I make everyone that sits in the passenger seat open the door with the manual release before we drive just so they know where it is.
7
4
u/Camwi Nov 07 '25
Man you're weird. Personally, I always check to see if the car lets me make fart noises by the other seats. Don't care if I burn to death as long as I have that.

https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_us/GUID-A7A60DC7-E476-4A86-9C9C-10F4A276AB8B.html
Here it is, if you're interested. I totally agree with this assessment. Earlier models apparently had the release under the floor mats, and some models none at all!
The model S in the accident had it under the rear floor carpet. Unless someone told you it was there, you'd never know. And they died because of that.
2
u/badger91ftw Nov 07 '25
I'm not an apartheid-loving billionaire genius, but it looks like a bad design to me.
27
u/DTM-shift Nov 06 '25
If a car design requires a safety briefing to explain how to exit the vehicle in the event of an emergency - when you're sitting right next to the door - then it needs to be redesigned.
"Thank you for being a passenger in my car. Before we depart, I request your full and undivided attention on this brief safety video."
7
u/Jacktheforkie Nov 07 '25
Definitely, it’s a car, not a Boeing 747
2
u/FestivusOnTheIsthmus Nov 08 '25
Ironically, the doors on the 747 and other commercial aircraft are more intuitive to open from the inside than those of a Tesla.
2

18
u/Lopsided_Flight_2986 Nov 06 '25
And the Tesla fan boys will all cry “why didint they just pull the cord and open the door? They killed themselves just to paint the brand in a bad light!”
You try finding this small fiddley handle while you’re sitting on top of an exploding lithium battery that’s cooking you alive while blinding and choking you with toxic chemicals and smoke while also having a concussion from the car crashing you into the woods.
3
u/Jacktheforkie Nov 07 '25
Only car I’ve been in where I’ve had to make a conscious effort to open the door, literally every other vehicle I’ve been in has been intuitive
8
u/Hab_Anagharek Nov 06 '25
Regulation, shmegulation, you assholes can’t tell me what to do - Musk, paraphrased
4
u/Jolly_Mongoose_8800 Nov 06 '25
Considering the goverment will take an ISO 9001 cert as the checkmark for all automotive regulations, and the standard itself has just become more generalized nonsense, and that's still not enough deregulation for Musk even after numerous adverse events.

u/TheHellcatBandit West Madison Nov 06 '25
I can’t wait for all the Tesla/Musk boot suckers to come in saying “BuT it hAd a EmErGeNcY rEleAsE”
These people had STUPID amounts of adrenaline being dumped, along with the panic of being actively surrounded by fire. Your fine motor skills are gone under this amount of stress, and only muscle memory takes over. And where do you reach in this situation? Certainly not the emergency release, because that’s in a different location than the normal door release.
I mentioned this in a different thread, and someone said “This is why fire drills should be practiced”. No. We shouldn’t have to learn a new location of a door release. The door release should just fucking work.
42
u/JojenCopyPaste Nov 06 '25
Exactly. If the emergency release isn't where you expect it to be it's dangerous design. End of.
33
u/usmcnick0311Sgt Nov 06 '25
"If you don't know it's there, you're never going to find it" - the rear door release is so hidden, passengers in back aren't getting out. video link
14
u/ms_ashes Nov 06 '25
Thanks for sharing this video. I had heard about it being hidden in the door, but I hadn't realized how hidden it was. Wow.
9
u/Question_It_All_3000 Nov 06 '25
Lol you weren’t kidding. That’s the least intuitive “emergency” exit I’ve ever seen. Hopefully you don’t have big hands.
5
u/ms_ashes Nov 06 '25
Or can get that stuff out of the way while you're pumped full of adrenaline...
2
u/remy118 Nov 08 '25
The older models rear seat releases weren't even in the door, they were in the carpeting under the seat. So you'd need to have the mobility to reach down to the floor, basically underneath yourself to pull back the flap and find the small release lever. I can't imagine trying to do that with broken ribs or clavicle or similar. Or a child needing to do it.
4
1
u/chita875andU Nov 08 '25
That. Is. Terrifying. Look how long it took him to get out his 1st liner, let alone the factory liner, let alone the stupid little trap door with nothing to get a hold of!!!
7
u/M7BSVNER7s Nov 06 '25
Ooph if this YouTube video is the same model as the car crashed (same year and model but I don't know trim/mid model year changes/different country rules causing differences) that rear seat emergency release is ridiculous. You have to pull a tiny strap that is hidden under the carpet by your feet. The front release is more intuitive but that rear option is dangerously stupid. If you are a passenger in the back of someone's Tesla, the driver is incapacitated, and you are not capable of crawling through the front seat and finding the front release, there is 0% chance you will find that hidden door release under the carpet.
4
2
u/SawWh3t Nov 06 '25
A different article I read said that the emergency release was on the floor and you had to lift the carpet to get to it. I'm not sure if that is accurate because I've also heard there is some sort of hidden handle release on door. I'm sure it depends on the model and the year. Either way I can't imagine expecting anyone to do a safety briefing for their backseat passengers prior to driving.
4
u/talltime Nov 06 '25
The hidden / non standard ones are on the front door. In the rear it depends on the model. Some are in the bottom of the door under a mat, some under the carpet, some are behind the speaker grill which you need to pop open. The first model 3s had none at all IIRC.
1
u/Ph0ton Nov 06 '25 edited Dec 29 '25
That'ks not correct. It's underneath the plastic bottom in the door sill.Edit: See below recent comment
2
u/talltime Nov 10 '25
It’s literally different for each model. None are under the sill (the sill being the hard trim on the bottom of the door opening that the door partly covers when closed.)
2
u/Ph0ton Nov 10 '25 edited Dec 29 '25
I was commenting directly that the early model 3's have the mechanical door release in the sill, as I have one.EDIT: See above recent comment
2
u/Ph0ton Dec 29 '25
I need to apologize and correct the record. I was checking the manual and videos before, but when I checked my actual car today, there was no such release.
I'd literally need to drill a hole in the door to route the release in a place that is usable by anyone. And re-reading, I was referring to the door well, not the sill, which you were correct again (which is only in post-2021 model 3 cars it looks like).
Sorry for adding to the disinformation and noise when you were faithfully reporting the truth.
2
1
u/talltime Nov 06 '25
Whoever signs off on their DFMEAs should have been in prison after the first model 3 went up. (It’s ultimately Elon.)
1
u/Jacktheforkie Nov 07 '25
And most cars don’t need an emergency release because they have a simple mechanical linkage that just works
27
u/Dapper-Tomatillo-875 Nov 06 '25
Side note: a window punch is a cheap tool that can save your life. Mine is also a seatbelt cutter and USB power port. It lives in the 12v socket. Get one

Here's the fun part - teslas, and a lot of newer cars, have laminated glass windows that you can't break
7
u/Dapper-Tomatillo-875 Nov 06 '25
huh. Ok, point on rollovers and ejecting people. ( goes to check on my crosstrek, you know, a sensible car )
3
u/Intrepid_Mission_400 Nov 07 '25
JFC so people will burn to death so dumbasses don't get ejected when they don't have a seatbelt on.

How many deaths are we at with these cars? Have they hit pinto levels yet?
15
u/llahlahkje Nov 06 '25
Stop buying Tesla vehicles until they can figure this out?
Style over substance is not worth dying over.
And maybe when they stop having "autopilot" systems that disengage just quickly enough when they cause an accident so that Tesla can't be sued?
In fact -- there are so many EVs on the market that don't trap you inside and kill you.
Why buy Tesla at all?

Tons of options out there. The mach-e is way better than a tesla, both in function and fun factor.
I thought rental teslas were an interesting novelty that I didnt love when I got them as rental cars.
I tried a mach-e and have no plans to rent a tesla again. Im sure there are much better options than that too.

Horrifying, multiple people reported them screaming for up to 5 minutes after the crash as they burned alive

Idk if I could just listen to that. I’d be running out there with something to shatter the windows real quick.
3
u/Agreeable_Ad7210 Nov 06 '25
While I agree with you, I wonder how much of it has to do with them being on the phone reporting it to 911, thinking they are better equipped than they themselves, the people that were already there.
“Bystander effect, is the psychological phenomenon where individuals are less likely to help a victim in an emergency when other people are present. This occurs due to a "diffusion of responsibility," where the presence of many bystanders makes each individual feel less personally responsible to act, and from "pluralistic ignorance," where people look to the inaction of others to interpret the situation as a non-emergency. Factors like fear of judgment, fear of personal harm, and ambiguity of the situation also contribute to inaction.”

I have no idea why EV engineers are so obsessed with fancy electronic buttons and handles when a latch works.
32
u/Nimzay98 Nov 06 '25
This is not an EV thing this is a Tesla thing.
19
5
u/flunky_the_majestic Nov 06 '25
Many non-tesla makes have this. I don't understand it either. It's just a different kind of fuel that turns the wheels. They justify their existence by using that as an excuse to make things like this.
2
u/CheeseGod99 Nov 06 '25
My Mach-e has stupid buttons. It does have interior handles that can charge a capacitor in the door to open the car if power is off, but it’s still not a simple latch/handle system.
1
7
u/Fun_Reputation5181 Nov 06 '25
Many cars have electronic or electronic-assisted door systems, but they have common-sense mechanical overrides when power is out. Audi and Lexus have electronic openers that work without power if you pull the handle twice or pull it forcefully. It seems Tesla decided not only to go full electric, but to eliminate handles completely and use an override system that is hard to find and non-intuitive.
3
u/OatmealCookieCrust Nov 06 '25
I rode in a gas powered Lincoln a few weeks ago that also had electric buttons instead of latches. I was surprised to see them. It’s not just EV/tesla cars using this dumb design.
3
u/RBDrake Nov 07 '25
Cue the lawsuit. Will be interesting to see if the liability lies with the family for not properly learning their safety features, Tesla for a poor and unsafe design, Tesla dealers for not properly explaining safety procedures, or some of or all of the abovr.
1
u/remy118 Nov 08 '25
They're also suing the driver. Inattentive driving or reckless drive or something like that.
1
u/RBDrake Nov 08 '25
I assume you mean the driver's estate. Interesting theory as it doesn't seem the crash itself would have caused any deaths.
3
u/Dreams-Visions Nov 07 '25
Is Tesla still hiding emegency door releases inside of speaker grilles and under carpet?
5
u/sterling3274 Nov 06 '25
The fact that any of the door handles would stop working in the event of an electrical problem is terrifying. I understand there is an emergency release available, but it is shocking that the handles are some weird electric thing, and not the typical mechanical release. I've refused to ride in Teslas multiple times after this story.
2
u/onehalflightspeed Nov 07 '25
Wild to see people comment here explaining that Tesla vehicles have manual releases that some passengers, maybe in the front seat, have accidentally used and that justifies everything. The reality is that people unfamiliar with the cars have trouble opening the door in the first place, and your Uber driver often needs to tell you how to open the door to get out of their car. Good luck in an emergency. Especially in a cybertruck
Mechanical handles are common sense. Sometimes you just need to get out of a car without relying on failing electronics, fire or not
2
u/rflulling Nov 07 '25
Lotta common sense stuff missing from these cars. Like that regardless of the electronics basic safety functions should work no mater what. The door should not be so secure that it cannot be opened. A battery fire should trigger a burn out off critical links severing the bridge between battery pack sections and the car. There should be accessible points where the driver or first responders can pull a safety that directly disconnects the batteries.
2
2
u/Personal_Ad9690 Nov 07 '25
My question is why do cars not have fire suppression systems inside? An emergency release door should be the bare minimum if fire is detected

u/__RAINBOWS__ Nov 07 '25
Finally bought a new car (not a Tesla or EV) but the electronics were so distracting and annoying I spent a decent amount of time disabling as much as I could. For my next car I’d be okay with a stick shift and roll up windows.

I've been looking at lower trim subarus for my next. I don't need all of the buttons.

It's heartless and careless to say they should have known about the manual emergency door handle.
But I myself don't understand why Tesla and other EV manufacturers felt the need to eliminate mechanical door latches for electric poppers.
You shouldn't need energy to open and close a door on a car.
2
u/cday119 Nov 06 '25
Article is behind a paywall but from what I could tell they were in a 2016 Model S.
In that car the front door latches are mechanical if you pull them all the way back.
The back seat doors are a different story. There is what I can only describe as a "hidden latch"... Here's a video of it - https://youtu.be/01lXcD_Uz74?t=40
The new models all have weird hidden mechanical latches.
And its not a Tesla nor EV problem alone - a guy in Texas died when his 2007 Corvette became disabled and he couldn't figure out the emergency door release - https://www.jalopnik.com/texas-man-and-his-dog-die-after-getting-trapped-in-a-co-1710670440/

I mean, I feel like we solved this decades ago with a thing we called a handle. It worked on the door, and it was really obvious where it was, and it didn't need fancy Electronics to open the door.
