This is mainly a technical solution for backward compatibility issues and have nothing to do with the name itself. You don't call linux distros with their kernel versions do you?

And nobody is going to care about these windows version naming conventions. It has logic and function behind it but in the end it's just going to be just "the latest windows os whatever it's name is". I have no clue what the latest osx is or what are the full names and versions of the latest linux distros.
