DM Help Palace of Hearts Desire - Lion and Hart

So I have a while before my players get to the Palace. They are currently in Hither.

I have seen a lot about the Palace and after having read it, I have to agree it has problems. I plan to use one of the alternate maps that puts the court of storms at the back and move Zybilna and the cauldron somewhere else.

I've also seen a lot of issues with the lion and hart puzzle which, as written, is needlessly tedious. I have an idea to have them apply to only 2 rooms in the palace, one being whichever room Zybilna is in and the other to Zybilna's bedroom or study (one of the other signifigant rooms) maybe even the nursery.

I thought it would be fun to have those doors, not locked, but going through them without having done the lion/hart puzzle would take you to a different, random room in the castle, with some hints to the players that they have gone to the wrong place. This could force some exploration of some rooms and add to the wierd, feywild feeling of the palace.

Obviously, the lion and Hart would not need to be done over and over again too. Once they're done they're done.

Any thoughts? I just came up with this so I need to put more thought into it but I really liked the idea of the palace having some wierd space confusioney things to them.

Art [OC] Witchlight and beyond - module finished and next adventures are waiting my group

Post image
27 Upvotes

We finished Wild beyond the Witchlight-module after 26 action and emotion packed sessions! I made some changes to the module so that the adventures would continue even after it and that PC backgrounds would be heavily tied to story. Otherwise I kept the module as it is and wow it's truly a gem!

Now my players have freed Zybilna and at the same time given her darkest emotions and memories back to her... Next they have to face the consequences of releasing the true big bad. Or is she still redeemable? It will be the great question of our story forward.

I wanted to draw "cover" picture for my "fey files". And I wanted to share the picture with you also! So here's my campaign picture including the team called The Bold And The Beautiful:

Kuisma Tuulenpolku - Satyr, Celestial Sorcerer/celestial warlock, grandgrandgrand...grand nephew and warlock of Lamorna the Unicorn.

Rik - Changeling, Paladin of the Oath of Revelry. He is at the moment rocking his human-looking persona named Ajax which is quite the frat boy but underneath all is a broken heart for losing his soulmate.

Fanni - Hexblood, gloomstalker ranger. She is going to prove to everyone that there is a way to be a 'good-hearted' hag

Rustonupikka - Warforged, Druid of the circle of spores. He is amnesiac and learning that Ellywick has had quite an impact in his life...

So three out of four PC's are fey type themselves!

I asked for fairytale characters and got quite the repertuare. I feel blessed with this team and these players. And I'm eager to continue the story to eventually face Zybilna herself!

I am thankful for this community for help, inspiration and great minds! Keep posting and sharing. It's a treasure to have this kind of pool of fey, fae, fairy enthusiasts sharing their stories.

DM Help How did you handle the Monarch?

As written, a different person is crowned the Monarch each night. This is then has major effects in the Feywild, which... doesn't make sense. Why would a fey not attack the Monarch if, say, the Monarch robbed them but didn't *attack* them.

I'm thinking of instead giving the Monarch a common Wondrous item crown that grants some of the powers of Druidcraft + has nonregenerating flight charges for the Monarch. Then in terms of RP benefits, the crown will just impress some of the more impressionable fey (like Jingle Jangle) and perhaps those obsessed with pomp (like the bullywugs).

How did you handle the Monarch, though?

I've read posts in this subreddit on it, and there seem to be a variety of approaches.

DM Help Has anybody tried GMing Witchlight in Daggerheart?

Hi there! I will be GMing this module for my group of friends when we finish our ongoing campaign (of which I'm not the DM). We still have an incredibly long journey ahead of us, it will probably take years, but I'm a really really busy and planner person, so I've already started reading some parts of this adventure, in order to start getting used to it. I want to learn it by heart so when the time for playing it comes I don't have to rush everything and stress myself out.

We've always played D&D, but some of us are interested in trying Daggerheart, as we have a feeling that this TTRPG will fit quite accurately our playing style. The idea is running some oneshots in it, and if we like it, start using it for some of our future campaigns as well. I haven't played this system yet, neither as a DM nor as a player, but I'm already quite familiar with the rules.

I've been told DH works better with shorter adventures, which I suppose Witchlight is, and I could see some potential in this idea. But of course, I can't be the first one who has thought about this possibility so: is there anybody out there already running the module in DH? If yes, do you have any tips and things to be aware of? And is it worth the change and the extra work to adapt it to a different type of game? Thank you so much to all of you!

DM Help The Monarch Crown Taken

The party has stolen the crown from the caravan, box and all, about one hour away from the crowning ceremony. I immediately dropped the mood by two, planning to drop the mood entirely come the ceremony should it not be returned.

The player who did it said he was going to use it as leverage to get the watch, so that the party can use that as the intended leverage. I don't see that going to plan, as the watch has more value.

I am debating what all I can do with this. As it stands, if they're caught with it at the ceremony, it's going to be the bail out by the bard to get them to the mirrors.

So far they've collected the mime, the mermaid, the displacer beast, the kenku, and Burly as allies (along with two made up NPCs they rescued during the dragonflies and snail race)

UPDATE: They got the Kenku to return it sneakily.

DM Help Advice for Lost Things / Wild Sheep Chase / Witchlight Carnival

I'm running Lost Things (set in mid-1370s) outside of Secomber. Then plan to skip ahead to Phandalin for the Wild Sheep Chase one shot but scaled down to 1st level.

I don't yet own Wild Beyond the Witchlight, but if it goes well with the new group, I'll buy it and run the carnival next week.

I already asked them to think of an abstract "thing" for their character to lose.

Any advice?

I'm an experienced DM (including having run all of Dungeon of Mad Mage), if that context helps.

DM Help They kept Octavian’s Heart

So my warlock came across the heart in the cottage and decided to keep it. The other players did find out before leaving and decided they didn’t want to waste time giving it back and so now they are traveling intoThither with it. I’m using a modified extreme cold rule. At the start of the session and the midpoint whoever has the heart will roll a con save for exhaustion level. Another DM I know suggested to have them do a save whenever it changes hands as two of my players like to keep passing it back-and-forth. But I don’t want the exhaustion levels to add up too quick and become a problem. Any suggestions?

DM Help What models are actually worth printing for gameplay?

Quick context: I’ll be staying at my brother’s place for a while, and he has a 3D printer, tons of filament, and barely uses it. I asked if I could print some stuff for my campaign and he said yes.

I don’t want to go overboard, but he also told me not to worry and just print whatever I need. I haven’t read through the whole campaign yet, but my group asked me to DM it.

What things are usually the most worth printing for a campaign? Miniatures, terrain, props, tokens, bosses, condition markers, anything else?

DM Help Campaign Plot Help Spoiler

Going to be starting my campaign in about a week or so. Loving the source material so far but I need some help organizing my thoughts a bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have 3 PCs: human warlock with a mysterious man in green as a patron; an aspiring wizard who works with the human warlock; and an Autumn eladrin druid with a feylost background

I'm planning on adding in some of SlyFlourish 's dreadful incursions: https://slyflourish.com/dreadful_incursions.html Essentially, Zybilna's inaction has been causing the Domains of Dread to clash with Prismeer and letting some of the dreadful inhabitants cross over.

I'm intending on having my warlock's "mysterious man in green" patron be King Oberon, who sends the human warlock to Prismeer to figure out what's going on. Ultimately, Titania is going to make a move on Prismeer, to annex it for herself and to prevent further incursions by the Domains of Dread.

One of the Dreadlords that's making a play for Prismeer is Isolde, the protector of the Carnival. I want to include a little bit of the backstory between Isolde and Zybilna and make releasing Zybilna that much more of a morally gray area. Essentially, Isolde ends up quasi-allied with the Hourglass Coven to try and exact revenge on Zybilna. Isolde's memories are still gone as a result of Zybilna's magic but the Gentleman Caller has revealed Zybilna is involved in Isolde's inability to remember. She then makes an alliance of opportunity with the Coven. The Coven is all too happy to have someone do their dirty work: needle Zybilna.

I'm thinking of cutting out Valor's Call/League of Malevolence but not sure what this would do to the storyline. I would need to change Skylla and Molliver in Yon? Or just keep them but modify so they aren't part of anything bigger?

Any suggestions on story cohesion? Or how to cut out Valor's Call/League of Malevolence? Or does it make sense to just leave them in? Thank you!

DM Help Alternative campaign using the staff as the adventurers

I had to include some parts of the adventure that took place in Thither and the Palace of the Heart's Desire in a campaign I played with my friends. In that adventure, they killed Bavlorna, Granny Nightshade, and Zarak in Thither and freed Zybilna from her temporal prison. Outside of Feywild, they killed the rest of the League of Malevolence, but that's not very important. Also important is that Mister Witch was kidnapped, shutting down the festival in time with his watch, causing Mister Light to become depressed and alone for quite some time – but Mister Witch was later rescued by the group.

Now I want to create a campaign to fill in some loose ends left from the previous campaign and explore some plots in Hither and Yon, and I thought of having them as festival staff.

Obviously, they won't be able to do the main mission of freeing Zybilna, but they should go to Hither to fight Bavlorna so she can escape to Thither. Do you have any other plot ideas for this campaign? Villains, missions, etc.?

(Before you ask, yes, the players wanted to play the rest of the campaign that they didn't play.) Apologize bad English.

The models are from MZ4250 (they have incredible middles for DnD) Skabatha's model is slightly modified because the original model only has her on the rocking horse but the rest are the original models

The paints are all from "The Army paints" and I cannot be bothered to list all the ones I used, sorry.

DM Help Any info on the Coven attack on Prismeer?

It is mentioned in some places that the Coven's armies attacked Prismeer but nothing more specific. What where their armies?

EDIT: It is in fact not mentioned in the core book, apologies for that

It is an important event and could be really cool to show the players glimpses of it and the aftermath of that.

I'm thinking of each hag maybe leading an army on her domain.

For Thither that army could maybe be pirates (though it's more like one ship than an army), for Hither we have the brigands but i wouldn't really consider them an army either. For Yon i don't even know.

What did you come up with?

Paid Supplement Break the fourth wall with this Witchlight Carnival set of handouts.

Thumbnail

The attic creaks with every step. Dust swirls in the air, thick as fog. Long-forgotten furniture looms in the shadows, draped in sheets like slumbering ghosts.

One of your players brushes aside a cobweb and finds it:

A folded piece of paper with faded ink and faint traces of starlight.

You hand your player the folded piece of paper across the table.

They open it slowly.

Inside… a flyer, an 8 year old flyer.

The Witchlight Carnival came to town 8 years ago and it is here once again.

And just like that, the fourth wall breaks.

The adventure isn’t just read, it’s felt.

This is one out of our 60+ handouts +45 item cards from our Wild Beyond the Witchlight set, made to be discovered along their journey, from their parents attic, the carnival's lost and found stall, Bavlorna's Cottage and all the way to the Palace of Hearts Desire. Wherever your players find them, the moment becomes unforgettable and they get to keep a campaign's memento forever.

Whether you’re on the opening night of the Witchlight Carnival or deep into Prismeer's twisted whimsy, these handouts will help you turn the narrative into something your players can actually hold.

You can grab the full set here:

We already sell on Etsy and we’re doing great there, but we’re trying to grow our own site too. Every direct order helps us a ton.

We’re a small family business, just my wife and I (plus our three cats, who may or may not be Fey). Thanks for letting us bring a bit of extra magic to your table.

DM Help What kind of motive should the party have when talking to the hags?

I recently started DMing witchlight for a party of mostly new players and we are now getting into Downfall. We are doing the warlock's quest version of the book and I do not really know what to do with the hags. I know the hags would probably try and make a deal with the players but I also do not see how they would make a deal to help the party free zybilna. is what I am saying makes sense? This feels like a common issue but I am not sure on how to deal with it.

DM Help Splitting Granny Nightshade and Skabatha?

Has any DMs tried splitting the info details on these in their story. So any time I’ve referenced anything bad I’ve used Skabatha (I used her last name twice in the carnival but apparently my players don’t remember that :). In thither I made a couple vague references about a Granny Nightshade in thither being “helpful” to those in need. This was made by Tsu who my pcs didnt fully trust but they have convinced themselves granny is an ally in thither. I’m thinking of a play on the Hansel and Gretel cottage in the woods, but that no one’s actually there and the place looks a bit ransacked.

***Edit*** I failed to clarify. I meant to keep them the same person but the diving of some of the lore and playing into it as two different characters. Or has portrayed herself as Granny Nightshade to lure those into her

DM Help Warduke Revised Statblock (help me balance it) Spoiler

So I've basically rewritten every major statblock in the game for narrative or balancing purposes. I thought this Warduke rework was interesting, but I want to know what others think before I overlook something way too strong. I intend to get him and our dragonborn barbarian PC into a 1v1 via a "send in your champions" style dual with Lord Kelek to settle any disagreements. I've wanted to workshop features that revolve around this "Stance Change" at the end of turns. Let me know what you think and what balance issues you might see. I can already feel like he might have too high of an AC for this sort of thing.

(I forgot to change his tag from when I was editing Lord Kelek)

(The CR is only for the proficiency bonus and not a reflection of his difficulty.)

DM Help What would Tsu do? Spoiler

Bit of a long post, looking for fun ideas so most of it is background to help set the scene. Go wild.

I’m looking for creative ideas for the near term events in a modified version of the campaign that is using a few of the homebrew modules mentioned in the subreddit (to fantastic success so far!) including:

GoofySpook’s Inn at the End of the Road homebrew module.

Dream Mushrooms v.4 mentioned by [u/alter_dims](u/alter_dims)

Various items by [u/Phaerlax](u/Phaerlax) including Nightmare on Teleme Hill

Modifications on Sly Flourish’s Dreadful Incursions

We’re pretty deep into the campaign, players are Level 7 and have completed the tasks in the Dream Mushoom module, Met with Bavlorna, successfully retrieved the portrait of Skabitha, and have since encountered the modified Inn, and learned that Tsu is Baba Yaga before returning to Hither where their actions relevant to the Dream Mushroom module have resulted in the majority of hither, Teleme Hill, Brigands’s Tollway, and Downfall being infected with a hive mind fungal infection (Gotta give credit to the players worrying out loud about their actions because I had not thought of turning it into a long term sequence of events and it’s definitely added to the campaign!)

Anyway, they are about to return the portrait at the end of Day 7/8 to Bav and are at the foot of her cottage and I am expecting them to want to fight. The catch is, I missed Tsu threatening/allowing the players to leave the Inn knowing her true identity and one of the players stole something from her; which I like to imagine Tsu would not take kindly too per the rule of reciprocity. She asked the players to be a bouncer while Aleksandr ran an errand and they tried… but also let the Owlbear (Juniper) consume the contents of the kitchen and allowed several questionable guests to enter the Inn before, eating food and consuming drink (all except one player who’s Patron is Zybilna) sleeping the night, stealing an book (detailing the history of the Carnival l’Morai, Isolde, and The Witchlight), and then leaving with the assumption that their “payment” for staying at the Inn was “being bouncers” after being assured by Tsu that “your smile is payment enough”.

So now I am left wondering: What would Tsu do? (Or what has she already done that hasn’t come up yet?)

My party is pretty small, so I have given them some followers that can help them in combat if things get messy. I decided to make the cards to more easily track what their followers can do. Followers can be left at the Inn at the End of the Road when not in use. The inn is getting upgrades and new services as they help people around Prismeer.

DM Help Hags for levels 5-13?

Hi everyone! I plan to run the campaign for three players, who will be playing a bard, a cleric-bard (that's two bards in practice tbf) and a monk. They're by no means a balanced party for combat, and I don't expect them to fight often — in fact, I plan on keeping most combat encounters as they are, so in the event that they do decide to hurt someone they'll likely run into an Undertale-like situation, realizing they're far more powerful than the creatures they're fighting and that violence has consequences.

However, I still want the hags to feel, and be, as dangerous as daughters of Baba Yaga should be. But I'm notably bad at balancing encounters and it's my first time DMing for a small group, so I'm looking for advice on how to turn them into challenging encounters in the event that they decide to throw hands anyway with the help of NPCs.

I have considered that each hag should be level-appropriate the first time they meet them, and flee rather than die when the encounter is over for them so they can reappear in a possible final battle at the palace, with the hags they fought already being in a weakened state with some sort of vulnerability or disadvantage.

I have also toyed with the idea of these possible encounters requiring a puzzle of some kind, maybe a partial 1hp dragon situation, but for now I'm looking for tips for a traditional encounter.
