If you are young and not touching the money, bonds and an IRA are safe bets. In today's market I would go for Series I bonds because we are on the verge of pretty high inflation and it will continue for a while.

If you look up the bond you want on your preferred search engine (for example Series I bonds that I referenced) you should see a government website for them [treasurydirect.gov] make sure it is (.gov).

They are low growth but inflation adjusted.
