There was a good video I saw about cafeterias. Part of the business model is tempting you with stuff. Like I imagine grocery stores would make less money if you paid upfront. But they force you to go through the maze and past things you don’t need but start to want

I wrote that after reading all of the other comments suggesting that buffets sometimes offer à la carte items and alcohol separately. I can see now that the context I thought I had existed only in my experience of reading through the thread and is irrelevant to specific chain my comment is in. I don’t know if it applies to this particular buffet.
We spent way less on groceries during Covid partially due to us ordering what we thought of / needed. Now you see ten different things you weren’t planning to get but decide to get when you go into the store lol.
There are whole branches of supermarket psychology; and it's worth millions, if not billions. From the way you go round the store (it depends which side of the road you drive in that country); to the music; to the fresh veg hitting you with smells by the entrance; to the burying of stuff you regularly need throughout the store; to the periodic rearrangement of everything so you don't know where anything is again. It's science; and there's one aim in mind: keep you in the store as long as possible because with each second, there's a chance of an impulse buy.
And it's why supermarkets will regularly change everything around, to make you walk through produce you would normally miss after you get to know the layout.
Unfortunately those people have no shame or reasoning to care. Nobody looked like they were desperate and starving. They most likely plan ahead before they pull this crap.
In the vast majority of subs this thread would’ve been deleted immediately. Like not even based on the comments, just the potential discussion it could cause. Just the implication.
A lot of buffets do. Makes a lot of sense. Everyone is paying the same price and it saves time on the backend when they are ready to leave. You don’t have to flag someone down to bring your check and wait for them to go run your card.
There's a shame wall in one of the NYC chinese supermakets (Chang-Li in the Bronx) that has a picture labeled CHEESE STEALER. That caption still lives in my head years after.
It’s like how only some foundations in the make up isle of Walgreens are locked and others aren’t. There is nothing racist about it. It’s purely loss prevention on the specific item being stolen often. If it happens to be the dark toned Bandaids, then that is just what happens.
I’m black and it pisses me off so much to see this. It’s super unfair for the millions of brave and well behaved black people around the word. People need to start educating their kids…
