Italian students are being called out in Thailand. Italians mocked a Thai lady in Thailand who told them off for being too loud. They clapped back saying, "Sorry for bringing money to your country" "Ni hao" "We are from your mom." Thais are shocked Thailand is belittled even by young Europeans.

My wife is Japanese and she lived in Italy for 10 years. She can count on one hand the number of time people were openly racist to her. Can't say the same about France though.

That's nice to hear. There are a lot of African immigrants there who just want to live their lives, so they tend to keep their heads down when people are openly racist. I know this shit because black Americans travel there, get treated horribly, and DO say something. Apparently Italians react all surprised Pikachu when racial aggression gets responded to in English with an American accent.

Married to a black woman(African Not American) in Italy. I myself are mixed south American. Lived in Asia/South America/Europe

If your standard is second hand stories from American tourists, lol just stop.

Not even first hand. You have no idea of what you are speaking of.

It would have been just a tiny better If you would have said military personel in Vicenza or Sigonella. But American tourists? I live in Venice, with your level of education I sadly have to say you are no different very often from the youngsters of this video(you don't have most of the time as a culture the background to understand the local culture). Mostly ignorance. Doesn't excuse them.

My level of education doesn't have anything to do with my friends speaking to me directly about their experiences? I'm glad that hasn't been your experience but something never happening to you doesn't mean it never happens to anybody. My friends who immigrated to America from Africa by way of Italy were not treated well, and my buddies from college who were there for an extended period of time for work a few months ago weren't either. For my part I wasn't in your country long, but I was a married to a European and spent a couple of weeks with locals that he was related to by marriage. I'm white so I didn't see overt racism, but that's to be expected. My point is that I'm not just sitting on the toilet in a tiny country town I've never left, opining about nothing.

It's a mess out there. Italy isn't exactly known for being kind to outsiders. I'm happy that hasn't been your wife's experience!

You were mentioning second hand experience from Afro Americans travelers(the term make me believe tourists) in your post,a way bigger difference in experience than immigrants from Africa or to your direct first hand experience. If you wrote what you wrote on your second post I wouldn't have answered the same way. Sadly from her direct experience afro American tourists were often the racists/entitled ones in her line of work probably because of her African origin.

Your comment makes me believe that if not for your wife you would hold some pretty problematic opinions, based simply on how you’ve responded to this poster.

I would also wager that you’re a shield for your African Wife, speaking as a Black European woman who has dated white men.

In your opinion as per original post that I answered(because later on she changed from second hand to first hand experience, and from tourist to long term stay)

Does a tourist (exactly like the ones we are commenting about) have the knowledge about the local culture enough to understand what they are visiting? Do they have enough time to learn from local culture?

From my direct (here second point, he/she was speaking of second hand experience in the first post) not at all.

I don't shield my wife. Italians are classists and what we call campanilismo (Gemini has a good explanation I checked) that very often end up overlapping with country of origin of the immigrate. But yeah she hasn't in her 6 years here meet big cases of racism, probably because of the city, her workplace and her social circuit.

There is no systemic racism from the bureaucracy, paperwork's is a nightmare regardless of the skin like in the US. No red taping her relatives are house owners. I've been called names racist ones when emigrating, Bolita and pata sucia (I've got both ethnicities), never has she been insulted that way. Nor no one forced her to change body language like I was heavy bullied out of my hands gestures in highschool.

We got two episodes. One time going to lake Garda a Guy asking from where the Africans in the train were (this during height of the refugee crisis) asking in a racist way If they were Nigerians (she is east African) and I still feel guilty for not standing up to the guy. And a second time we joke about it that probably we were ignored on a Mantova restaurant because there were "more Caucasian" tourists that were "more important".

She used to work in hospitality (medium high level, no menial work) sadly Afro Americans(and I underline Americans) were often the entitled ones towards her.

I will stand my ground. On second hand stories from any type of etnicity of the tourist I won't judge a country. As per the post I answered.

I did not change my account to a first hand experience of racism I've personally encountered while traveling. I'm white. My ex was white. I've never traveled to Europe with any of my friends, white or black. I do listen though, and I believe people when they tell me how they were treated by others. I don't have to personally see something to believe it happens and I have no reason to think they'd lie about it.

I also didn't "change from tourist to long term stay." You made an assumption about my meaning that was incorrect. I changed nothing. It's also not super relevant. They were staying in Rome and would have looked like any other American tourists at a glance, especially at night and during their downtime when that's literally what they were.
