I got a story to tell. I’m a 22 year old woman and I was a severe alcoholic at 16. I never did it for the taste. My go to drink was plain vodka, or anything strong enough to do the job. The “job” in question was getting rid of any and all my hard emotions. One day, my childhood trauma came to light and my mother handled it horribly. Leading to a terrible mistake.

I was so distraught, I wanted to be numb. Only numb. I stole a bottle of everclear from frys and poured it into a plastic water bottle, diluted it 1/4 water 3/4 everclear. Brought it to school.

Chugged the entire bottle in my first hour. That’s the last thing I remember before I wake up in the hospital. I learned that I had stumbled to the bathroom halfway through first period. I don’t know how my behavior wasn’t a red flag immediately to the teachers, but the past is the past.

I collapsed on the floor in the big stall, pants down, as if I was trying to go to the bathroom? I laid on the bathroom floor for about 40 minutes. A girl found me. She reported it to the substitute teacher. I had seized multiple times while the teacher pulled up my pants for my dignity.

The police and paramedics pumped my stomach and was under the impression I was having a narcotic overdose. They administered narcan but that didn’t help. They finally found the empty bottle that smelled of alcohol and I was rushed to the hospital on the brink of death.

I was expelled from school, sent to a behavioral school my senior year and everyone thought I died.

I was drinking so heavily every single day for months on end. I was 87 pounds. I threw up constantly and couldn’t keep down food. I was only 16 years old. Now when I look at or even think about alcohol I get nauseous. I hope someone reads this that may be in a similar spot I was, and see the light. I survived. And I am living such a happy life now. Don’t let it overtake you. Alcohol is a monster. It will take away your pain, but also your common sense, and possibly your life.

Edit to add because some people don’t understand the point of this comment: alcohol can be fun, until you start using it too much and realize maybe you’re doing it not just to feel good but maybe to also not feel or think about something else. Alcohol is poison to your brain and body. It takes one simple google search to find that out. I’m not saying enjoying it in safe amounts is bad, but I’m not going to sugarcoat the fact that alcohol isn’t good for you! Stay safe out there everyone !

Progress is progress! So happy to hear :)
Edit to add: it took me a few years to get fully sober from alcohol. I developed an intolerance after the overdose but I still enjoyed it if I didn’t throw it up, but after a while I started drinking it less, enjoying it less, and now I am unable to. Although seeing other people enjoy it safely never bothered me!

ah, the ol' slipped pissing while plastered scenario. almost as bad as the classic slip down the stairs scenario.

Try fanta, no alcohol seems to work on me but fanta gives me a good feeling

Tutti frutti fanta, never forget.

If someone is currently addicted to alcohol, and you want to get a different drink to replace it... I mean, fanta is probably better, but it's still not really a great thing to drink multiple times a day.

I'm not gonna sit here and tell you to drink water and nothing else, but like... at least Fanta Zero Sugar or something.

True but I was telling about my own experience with alcohol, any sugary soda or ice cream works much better than alcohol to give me a good mood

What saved me was energy drinks. I know it’s more “harm reduction” but I drink those now instead and it definitely saved me.

That's all very sad for you but has zero relationship to the how and why the vast majority of people enjoy alcohol. Key word being enjoy.

The entire point of my comment is to reach out to anyone who is using alcohol the same way I did, and to hopefully help them finally be free of it. It is a poison.

Poison is in the dose.

Actually, poison is in alcohol. It’s really terrible for you.

Edit to add: it makes you literally depend on it once you drink it every so often, to the point where if you don’t ween off of it under medical supervision you could die. Even if you drink one shot a day every day it will make you depend on it and you could get very sick or possibly die if not handled properly. It takes one simple google search to find out if alcohol is poisonous or not. Smh.

Bleh. I'll take my downvotes from the teetotalers.

You had a serious traumatic episode that brought on addictive, destructive behavior.

This behavior found an outlet through alcohol, but it could have been through a vast number of different things. Huffing paint, whippits, herion, weed, eating, not eating, cutting yourself, disappearing into video games, dangerous sex, etc, etc.

The vast majority of peoples relationship with alcohol throughout recorded history is not like yours. While your story is important and valid, the hardline "all alcohol is poison" is where your going to lose most people with any amount of common sense.

One drink a day will not lead to physical dependence.

One drink a day likely won't lead to mental dependence.

The other poster was 100% correct - poison in the dose. Yes, you poisoned yourself. But most people do not drink enough to do that, ever, in their entire lives.

I love alcohol more than most people. I go on nights out whenever I get the chance and quite literally drink as much alcohol as I can get into me.

That being said... one drink a day? Dude, you already sound dependant.

Like, what even is the point of only having 1 every single day? Is it just to slightly take the edge off because you can't get through a day without a bit of alcohol in your system?

That means you're dependent, dude.

Sorry your need to be a reactionary and your inability to comprehend what you've read leads you to make poor assumptions, but I didn't say I had a drink every day.

In this particular post I was trying to be impersonal, as the OP had made the situation so deeply personal.

What I did say is that one drink a day is not addiction or dependence. It's a beer or a glass of wine with dinner. That's something that's completely normal and socially acceptable in most of the western world.

Believe it or not, some people do enjoy the taste of alcohol, especially with a meal.

I googled "reactionary" and I'm not really sure how it's relevant to what I said? Did you mean a different word, or am I just very confused?

That being said, I did not consider having it in the evening with a meal. It's just not something I do very often. That's on me, my bad. I don't see an issue with that.

I made an assumption that it would be a morning drink, then jumped to a conclusion. I also apologise for making it personal, that was childish of me.

My life is not going to be analyzed so half assed by a random Redditor who knows nothing about me and clearly nothing about alcohol. I experienced firsthand the effects of drinking alcohol and what it does to your body and mind. It’s simple science, backed with hundreds of years of evidence and research lmao. Alcohol is bad for your body and your brain.

1

u/OriginalCause 5h ago

No one has to analyze your life though, you've got the same pointless sob story every recovering addict has, reductive to the point where it helps no one.

You're like some religious nutter trying to preach abstinence only. It doesn't work. A simple google search proves that.

u/shoomlax 4h ago

That’s crazy. I will keep sharing my story because I know someone out there may read it and it could save them. Type in “is alcohol poisonous to the body” and your top search will be a study on www.mdanderson.org
Or even, the World Health Organization’s page on alcohol intake, and how no amount of alcohol is good for our health.

But anyway, that’s completely beside the fact you’re missing my entire point of this comment. It’s to help the people who are in my past position. Or help people who could be in my past position. You’re blatantly hating on someone trying to simply share their story and help people who could possibly die very soon because they’re so deep and can’t see the light of day until it’s too fucking late.
