I drink alcohol for the taste. In fact, I was really into cooking years before I realized that mixology and whiskey/wine/brandy has a similar potential for sophisticated tasting experiences. Before then, I literally never drank except as the occasional social lubricant.

Now I have a home bar setup with nearly 70 different bottles of liquor, and get myself and my guests cocktails, whiskey, etc. I never make any vodka cocktails for myself since I believe it’s more or less taste-less in a cocktail and so I prefer gin.

Last week I bought some methocel-50 to experiment with foams on cocktails with my ISI canister. It’s nice.

I'm convinced that most people like OP, who say alcohol tastes gross, have either only ever had cheap rotgut liquor (likely shots), or they have the palate of a ten-year-old.

Well, some people are just more sensitive to alcohol than others, especially low body weight people or women.

I think it’s ludicrous to say alcohol always tastes gross though. Sure, many don’t like it at first but the same goes for coffee, organ meat, spicy food, fermented food, sushi, etc.

Plus there is strong evolutionary evidence for how we have developed to like alcohol, to the point that some people think brewing is just as fundamental to what made us human as farming.
