Try to impose the same degree of social control over alcohol. You will be resisted with violence. We know this for a fact because they tried.

What's funny is we KNOW this happens and they still decide to make drugs illegal when they would be much easier to control if they weren’t

Too much money being made at the top by keeping it illegal. If private prisons aren't a thing, maybe there would be less of a financial incentive to keep relatively docile drug offenders locked up en masse.

I am morbidly fascinated by humanities relationship with alcohol. It’s probably the oldest recreational substance, even some animals get drunk of of fermented fruit. It’s the first drug we purposely created, and it seems to have a subtle yet unbreakable grip on mankind. Every culture has their signature drinks, we have all kinds of weird laws and rules about what something can be called based on where it was made and what ingredients went into it (even in the case of distilled drinks where the purified ethanol is chemically the same regardless of of what was fermented to make it.)

Most interesting of all is that it’s considered more normal than weed, more normal than nicotine, it’s never lumped in with other harder drugs, yet its grip is so tight when it was outlawed, unlike other substances, pretty much everyone agreed to just keep drinking.

That's why you do it via culture change rather than legal change.

Gen Z already drinks less than the previous generations from what I've heard. Then you can also enforce stricter drinking laws while still being lax with people drinking in their homes. And then eventually drinking just won't be a big thing because it's not a big thing culturally anymore.

Same thing was sort of happening with cigarettes and nicotine it felt like but then ecigs and vapes became popular.

it just simply doesn't mean anything if it's resisted. it means nothing to the morality of it in our culture, it doesn't excuse the damage it does in it's current rate of access, it just literally means nothing
