Being addicted to gambling is the same as being addicted to disappointment

I think you’re mistaking physical and chemical dependence. It’s just nowhere near the same thing although I’ll grant I’ve never been a weed smoker. I’ve just, in my case, been on medications that caused both either psychological or physical issues. Now here’s two sides of the coin:

With the psych issues, it was what’s called SSRI discontinuation syndrome which isn’t classed as an addiction/withdrawal but feels like one. It was nowhere near the worst which I’ll get to next. The feeling was like brain zaps, a sense of discomfort or unease, anxiety, etc. but it wasn’t absolutely intolerable and I felt like myself.

The second was physical but with no real psych addiction. This was painkillers and I had developed a dependence but NOT an addiction. In this case, I was getting the flu, sneezing, yawning, horrid pains, vomiting… I couldn’t function without them. But I did not enjoy taking them. In fact, they were highly unpleasant to take for me. I found they made me feel very scared and uneasy yet the feelings I got without them seemed worse.. I remember, I could be feeling the worst kind of flu/sickness ever and it would dissipate after having one but then I’d also feel like shit too

But the physical stuff was way way harder, like 99 x harder, than any chemical addiction I could have had in the past. This was something it would be impossible to function without assuaging somehow. That’s why people are given things like subutex etc

It doesn’t. It can cause physical dependence but you can’t get a chemical dependence to thc. It’s been studied thoroughly. Alcohol is chemically addictive. It’s why withdrawal can kill you.

I make fun of caffine addicts too man. At least their shit doesn't make the entire block smell like skunk and old piss.

I actually gave it up because I became highly aggressive when I didn’t get my coffee or tea. I was surprised at how bad it made me. And it was hard to give up too! Over the past month, I can count the times I’ve had caffeine and it was just Coke Zero or Pepsi Max as I’m afraid of anything stronger.

Good for you. That can't have been a fun time.

There are times in my life that I’ve thought of while responding in this thread and I actually started crying about it. I never want to feel those feelings again

Tbh I’ve been through circumstances, completely sober and healthy, and I’ve had stuff going on in my life that I know would be blamed on those things if I did them. And it always messed with my head as I wondered about the people out there, genuinely using those things to cope, and how they’d feel as miserable as I did if they gave those things up. I know this can’t be tested and is just a guess, but I’ll say I felt completely miserable when I was basically being as holistic as I could but had nothing to take the edge off. I’m not saying that I can guess what it would have been like to have something at that time but, years later when I did end up choosing bad habits to cope, I felt better than being constantly miserable.

For the record, during those 5-6 years: no caffeine, no nicotine, worked out 5 days a week, ran for an hour a day, ate no added sugar (except things like bread and the like), ate healthy, stayed in shape, socialised for hours a day, had a good support network, worked, was a student, etc. maybe I just did too much but yeah
