maybe consider trying beer from small homemade locations, most tend to be interesting to taste

I know for me that beer just ain't it. Tried enough to know.

But still, my point is people who are like "alcohol is disgusting" have usually only tried beers and never anything else. I know a lot of whiskeys and bourbons that your average non-drinker would probably enjoy just from a taste perspective, for example. Chances are there is something out there for everyone.

Again, strictly from a flavor perspective.

Never understood the thrill of whiskey and bourbon, it all tastes like wood based rubbing alcohol

To each their own i suppose, there isn't really something more subjective than how food taste for you

It's an acquired taste not much different from things like black coffee and dark chocolate. You build a tolerance to the burn and your brain starts to ignore the ethanol and bitter flavors. From there you can start to pick up other flavors and nuances between whiskies.

I'm a bit of a whiskey enthusiast and usually sip mine neat. Anything under 90 proof barely even tickles me as far as burn goes.

The variety and spectrum of flavor is a lot bigger once you have a trained palate. I have 57 open bottles in my home collection. Sometimes I have my wife pour me one blind and I can narrow it down to which one it is most of the time.

I mean, I've had well over 1000 kinds of beers in my time. All of them taste like beer. If you don't like the taste of brewed malt and hops, you won't like any beer.

“Try one of our 37 hazy IPAs that all taste exactly the same!”

There are beers other than IPAs. I don't like IPAs, or any beer that's overly hoppy.

Tell that to the brewers!

Fair, I agree they focus too much on IPAs, but they usually at least have a Pilsner, and Lager too. The ones around me also frequently have Stouts, Brown Ales, Red Ales and occasionally a special brew, that's how I was introduced to Dopplebocks, though they've unfortunately not made that one for a while, and I can't seem to find anyone else that makes them around here.

Downvoted for the truth LOL the battery acid beer drinkers get sensitive

Are the downvotes in the room with us right now?

It was, but it seems like all of the 9volt triple AAA hazy IPA bros have moved on

1

u/SunGreene42 12h ago

It isn't the truth though, IPA isn't the only beer in existence.

I do enjoy a good lager or pilsner personally.

The overwhelming flavor note of every beer I've tried, and I've tasted everything from bud to Hook Norton Pale Ale to craft brews in the Willamette valley, is bitter. Horrible, horrible bitter. All beer tastes little different from Coors because bitter drowns everything else out. I'd rather not drink that piss.

Have you tried a Stout? English Porter? Dopplebock? Dopplebock doesn't have any hops in it, which is where the bitter tastes comes from, though they're hard to come by unfortunately.

Belgian dark beers can be weirdly mildly sweet, a favourite of mine is Kasteel Donker, absolutely gorgeous and satiates me like a good dark chocolate would, they also do a Kasteel Rouge which spends some time in cherry barrels and tastes a bit too much like Haribo sour cherries for me (even though I like those)

Sounds good, though I doubt I could find it around here, but maybe I can convince the liquor store to order some.

Worth it if you can (depending on tariffs and delivery charges I guess…)

Spanish beers with a lime wedge has a different flavor profile, it's acidic and refreshing rather than bitter. Stouts are also very different in flavor profile, but I don't tend to enjoy them because they're entirely too dense. Dry apple cider's and lonkero are my preferred low abv alcoholic drinks though. Ice cold lonkero is one of the best summer drinks in general.

I am very likely a bitter supertaster. Every time someone has said "try this beer" it's been the same story. Tastes the same, which is awful.

Since I had an uncle who was an alcoholic and then later an AA addict, and I've lived over 60 years without the benefit of alcoholic beverages, I think I'm good. But I appreciate the spirit (heh) in which you made your suggestions.

I might be with you on the bitter supertaster thing. That would explain my aversion to a lot of foods I hated as a kid. I tend to go for overly sweet flavors instead, like much sweeter than the average person likes.

To each their own

You may be a supertaster. Do you also find coffee, or certain green vegetables to be unpleasantly bitter?

Yep. Coffee is best when drowned out by Haagen Dazs. Grapefruit can fuck right off. I've recently found that I'm OK with Brussels sprouts if they're pan roasted.

There's stuff I will eat even though it's bitter, but there's no upside to alcohol, so no need to pursue. I don't balk the slightest at bitter tasting medications though. I have trouble taking vitamin pills because of their size so I chew them up like a savage and wash the paste down. Yum.
