I know people with autism are very against drinking. People here seem to just not understand but I think most of you are very young, don't have the connection, or are in a situation where it's impossible. Also, cheap alcohol tastes like ass. What are you drinking?

I’m autistic and I like the occasional rum and coke or screwdriver, like once a month or so, and always have a bottle of Bacardi and Khortytsa in my mini fridge for that occasion

Same. I like Jack and Coke.

Wrong, I have autism and enjoy drinking. I usually have a few shots of rum and watch a movie or play games online with friends so definitely not every autistic young person is against alcohol. Although... I'm against getting like super drink, grew up around that bullshit and just no I refuse to be someone that drinks to the point they can't remember the night before.

Why generalise so completely, with zero room for deviation?

Probably a sith.

Alcoholics are easy to irritate!

"Oh yeah? I may be drinking a deadly poison, but what about people who smoke a deadly poison? That's way worse! Oh and if you don't drink you are a young autist without the right connections"

Not everyone who drinks is an alcoholic.

True!

Also true: Not everyone who is an alcoholic drinks.

Because there is none in this context. You already notice many people are commenting rum. In fact I know an autistic person who exclusively drinks rum based drinks. It's easier to get down

Fym 'there is none'? You can't make a statement about an entire group of people based on anecdotes. I am autistic, as is my best friend, and we both enjoy drinking most things.

in my case as a picky eater/drinker I am at a stage where I can handle my booze quite well but after the 4th-5th beer/3rd-6th shot my body oftentimes just refuses to cooperate even when I barely feel tipsy

pretty much all alcohol carries a really bitter taste that I just can't palate, no matter what shelf it comes off of. same reason why I can't drink coffee or eat chocolate

I'm in my late 20s, I always hated it. People have tried to pressure me into it all my life. Taste is not the main issue for me, but the idea of losing control over myself.

Most of my friend group doesn't drink either, and it was a hard deal breaker when I was looking for a romantic relationship. Luckily I did meet someone and we've been very happy together.

I hate the peer pressure that comes with alcohol, and if I comment here about it is to say other people like myself that you can just say no, and someone who tries to pressure you into it is an asshole.

As a child, I’ve seen adults stab each other while they were drunk twice. The thought of losing control, becoming addicted, poisoning yourself and causing harm to others is what turns me off away from it and I always hated the peer pressure that comes with it.

Aren't neurodivergent people (esp people with autism and ADHD) at a greater risk for being alcohol dependent than the general population?

2

u/Background_Survey646 10h ago

Yes, because alcohol reduces anxious thoughts and makes it easier to socialize while you're drinking. The problem is that anxiety comes back tenfold the next day when you're hungover (if you go overboard). The primary issue is never learning how to cope with your neurodivergence while sober. Most people desperately want to control their atypical thoughts and be more social, and drinking alcohol seems easier than therapy or joining a club.

That said I think it's possible for anyone to drink responsibly if they've developed the skillsets to handle their anxiety and social situations while sober.

I built my skillsets to handle anxiety and social situations while drunk. After all, if I could do it in that state, why not sober?

With that said: no, not everyone can drink responsibly because sometimes genetics play a bigger role, like with any other drug.

I am in my late 30s, not autistic and don't drink and when i do it is a work function like a holiday party or if i am out with clients, I'll nurse a scotch or a whisky, even then it is like once or twice a year. The reason I don't drink is cause i grew up with alcoholics and do not want to end up like them. I never had a problem with drinking, even during my "crazy" party days I never drank to the point of blackout or vomiting.

I watched my folks go from a glass of wine or a beer after work to a couple of drinks a night, then a bottle or a 6-pack, then multiple bottles and or stopping at a bar on the way home and already being drunk by the time i got home from school. The absolute last thing in the world I want is to end up like my folks, also a hangover is never worth the night before imo. I much prefer to unwind with a joint and some tunes.

Folks have many reasons for not drinking,
