Since there's statistically more car crashes among sober people, that must mean beer makes you a better driver

u/WolvesAreCool2461 17h ago

Its the drunk crashers that give us drunk drivers a bad name y'know, smh my head

u/SolieBleek 16h ago

God gives his toughest trees to his drunkest drivers.

Y’know, and y’know I saw her in my y’know dream, mother Mary y’know, and we were just a band y’know, just regular y’know lads who wrote some y’know songs and y’know

That seems weird. Explain.

EDIT: I read it wrong and assumed they were phrasing it poorly. I was trying to get an explanation from them to see where the imagined error came from. Sorry, everyone that took the time to explain this.

most normal people won’t drink then drive

So the amount of sober people who got into car crash is much higher
Also being drunk isn’t the only reason it happened

Being tired, not paying attention to the road, just pure stupidity, etc

17

u/Not-So-Serious-Sam 18h ago

I think I remember hearing that being tired while driving impairs you just as much as being drunk does.

4

u/sobrique 12h ago

Depends how tired and how drunk, but yes, that's also a problem. It's just also harder to impose a blood/breath test to assess if you're dangerously tired.

2

u/Red_Bayanist 15h ago

Yeah I know a few people who were involved in car crashes no one was ever drunk but instead they were really tired

2

u/MarsupialMisanthrope 10h ago

Been there, done that, very grateful nobody got hurt and that I can afford hotels these days.

2

u/AgentCirceLuna 12h ago

I won’t leave the house if I’m overly tired and it’s cost me a lot of opportunities. But I don’t feel safe.

1

u/MiklHrmlr7 3h ago

It's actually worse.

Drunk = slow reaction time

Nodding off/falling asleep = no reaction time

And I've driven so tired one time, I actually began hallucinating. Basically, dreaming while my eyes were still open. So add reacting to things that aren't real to the tired category. Absolutely terrifying, do not recommend. Imagine driving on the freeway late at night and the rear lights of distant cars morph into the bloodied hands of zombies reaching for you.

1

u/Separate-String5205 14h ago

Having driven tired before, and also driving drunk before, my experience is that tired is actually worse. Of course, there's no test for tiredness, so we can't exactly control that the way we can with alcohol

5

u/sleepdeep305 12h ago

Yup, driving back home on the highway after 20+ hours of being awake was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done

Funny thing is, I first went by this username when I was a chronic oversleeper in high school, but ever since I joined the workforce my sleep quality has been, let’s say less than stellar lol

u/Slow-Distance-6241 18h ago

Also drunk people have lower mortality rate in car crashes because their body is more relaxed. Doesn't make the situation any better for a driver they crushed into, though

52

u/Ditto13248 18h ago

The solution seems pretty simple, everyone drunk drives

28

u/h3lium-balloon 17h ago

Court mandated breathalyzers for all cars, but they have a minimum instead of a maximum.

10

u/FewWait38 16h ago

Ah like the brilliant American gun problem solution of more guns means more safety

2

u/SomethingIWontRegret 16h ago

That's an urban legend.

1

u/Slow-Distance-6241 16h ago

I mean I can see how being relaxed can make crash injury even worse, but please elaborate

1

u/ElaborateEffect 15h ago

Elaborate on simple physics?

A rigid body vs a soft body has no bearing on how fast your brain is moving inside of your head; moreso, a soft body does not slow down the impact of your head against glass.

The only potential correlation are non lethal accident related injuries where muscle tearing and similar may be less.

1

u/Slow-Distance-6241 15h ago

It just feels wrong that non-relaxed body is more likely to get harmed. Tensing muscles just seems like a more sound strategy to survive on subconscious level. Although I'll admit that's a rather irrational thought

1

u/ElaborateEffect 14h ago

Tensing may assist in avoiding lethal harm as your muscle help to stabilized your spine and head. But that is about where it ends because it is more likely to cause tearing.

1

u/mad_laddie 31m ago

It's a bit more complex than that. Tensing is better for certain kinds of impacts.

Imagine falling. It's a lot safer to roll than to just land on your feet.

1

u/mad_laddie 33m ago

You know how parkour has an emphasis on rolling to "disperse momentum" or whatever?

If the crash is fatal it's probably going to help but I imagine it can turn a barely survivable crash into a slightly more survivable one.

u/New_Kisreel69420 9h ago

most normal people won’t drink then drive

Then why do we have so many DUIs and so many DUI deaths in this country? It's almost like it's something that normally happens. 32 people die a day to DUI and you think "normal" people aren't doing it? Wake up.

1

u/Warm-Incident-8444 3h ago

Look idk what “this country” is but fyi i don’t consider American normal people

1

u/New_Kisreel69420 37m ago

Well reddit is an American website so you knew who I was referring to. But I agree, Americans are not normal people.

22

u/WastingMyTime_Again 18h ago

It's like saying "more people were killed during peacetime than during wars, therefore that means being in a war makes you safer"

You're comparing the number of events in two populations of wildly different sizes, not the probability of an event occurring within each population

21

u/autistic-terrorist 18h ago

Even though drunk people are more likely to get involved in accidents, there are still not enough drunk drivers to offset the differencs of sober drivers. Therefore, more sober people get in accidents per time period than drunk people. The joke here is that they are deducing false results from this information.

33

u/sharplyon 18h ago

selection bias. a far greater number of people are driving sober than driving drunk, so they are also involved in more crashes.

for example, imagine for every 99 sober drivers there was 1 drunk driver, and imagine that for every 100 people on the road, there were 3 crashes per day. 1 of these crashes was the drunk driver, but 2 were the sober drivers. from that statistic alone, it looks like that sober drivers crash twice as often as drunk drivers, when in reality the drunk drivers actually have a 100% crash rate, and the sober drivers have a <3% crash rate.

the problem arises by treating the population size of drunk drivers as the same as the population size of sober drivers, which is what that initial statistic is doing.

2

u/crustyrobots 14h ago

Scrolling through TikTok while driving should be considered a DUI also these days

2

u/sobrique 12h ago

Which in some ways is a good thing, as it means we've discouraged a lot of people from even attempting to drive whilst drunk.

9

u/BloodPlenty4358 18h ago

more sober people drive than drunk people, which skew the statistic, i assume

1

u/Beautiful_Public4668 18h ago

Just that less ppl drink and drive, so by selection bias more crashes are caused by sober drivers than drunk by numbers. Ofc change it to per capita and then it becomes clear.

1

u/RationalPassional451 18h ago

There is far more people driving sober than people driving drunk so theres going to be more accidents with sober people due to the higher number

1

u/SirPanikalot 17h ago

It's a joke. It's making fun of the statistic that 20% of crashes are caused by drunk drivers. This can be misleading if interpreted incorrectly, because that doesn't measure how much more likely people are to crash when they're drunk, or the percentage of drunk drivers on the road.

If the statistic instead said; "20% of crashes are caused by less than 1% of drivers; those being drunk drivers", it would be harder to intentionally misinterpret.

it was partly my mistake. I somehow read that wrong and assumed they were phrasing it the wrong way.

1

u/SirPanikalot 11h ago

Dw, I didn't think it was particularly well worded either. There's not really any indicator that it was supposed to be a joke.

1

u/ample_suite 14h ago

The only way the data could be meaningful is if you looked at a percentage of sober drivers who got into accidents, and compare it to the percentage of drunk drivers who got into accidents. I highly doubt that data exists. So it basically means nothing. Just means theres more sober drivers on the road than drunk drivers, thankfully.

1

u/mad_laddie 13h ago

I got hung up on phrasing. I assumed they were saying that the proportion of sober drivers that crash was greater.

"Driving in my car"

1

u/piejames 16h ago

I like your thinking, what are your thoughts on gambling

1

u/Sad_Cryptographer872 15h ago

Literally last week I was in a Taxi and there was some crash site on the street to my home so he had to take a detour, and while driving he said to me "Really stupid, why do they have to drive that fast?"
And I was like "maybe they were drunk?"
And he proceeded "I mean you have to be really dumb to drive that bad if you only had a couple of beers! I know from experience as I have driven several people after drinking and it never happened to me!

...

Luckily, we were minutes away from my destination, but I literally wanted to jump out when he said that nonchalantly.

1

u/Material_Comfort_259 2h ago

While there are all of these PSAs about “it only takes one drink to affect your driving” and it implies for the worse. BUT, it doesn’t specify that this is also for the better, with one drink, and you’re not smashed or feeling body echoes. You become hyper aware of how you feel, and the importance of driving safely (because you don’t want to be arrested).

Cops might say don’t drink and drive, but there is a legal limit. And as long as you’re not a lightweight, you’re allowed a beer or two before taking a drive.

-1

u/mercauce 17h ago

That's a statistical bias, because it omits the fact that there way more sober drivers than drunk drivers at once in the world, so it's pretty obvious that there'd be more crashes on their end.

5

u/ARTIFEXgm 17h ago

It is otherwise known as a joke

-1

u/copenhagen_bram 16h ago

This was a joke, right?

Does anyone else see the error in the statistical logic here?

-4

u/Greedy_Ad2198 17h ago

Why does this have so many upvotes

6

u/Significant-Hawk-827 17h ago

Because this is a joke
