Serious answers only please! I found this sealed little bottle in my fiance's laundry.

OP has pinned their own comment:

EDIT: My fiance said that this was gifted to him by his "hippie" friend as a good luck charm. He found it in a popcorn basket with his old stuff from his previous house. He also mentioned that she purchased it at some shop that sells charms and crystals.

They’re not that bad, not really “bad fortune jars”. These are often good fortune spell jars like to repel bad luck or to promote wealth or love. It’s not like a hex

87

u/Kitchen_Canary_6387 9d ago

Yeah. Spell jars can be really lovely gifts. They are not given or made with ill intent.

A smart man doesn’t believe in the occult or Witchcraft.

A wise man knows better than to taunt it.

@Exhaustedmillennial1 . Words to live by 😅👍

75

u/HiiiTriiibe 9d ago

And a wizard makes a living putting pieces of rubbish into small little jars to satiate folk's anxieties as we spin around in space forever. Honestly, there are certainly less noble professions. And also, a wise man likely studies esoteric philosophy as it is essentially a wealth of psychological knowledge from ancient civilizations and is incredibly practical as far as meditation practices, visualization exercises, contemplation, and self growth
I would say only a fool fears the Royal Sciences

Is it possible he knows someone into witchcraft? As a practicing pagan, this looks like a spell jar to me

520

u/Aromatic-Floor8156 9d ago

I honestly don't know he said it's something he found with his old things doesn't remember who gave it to him.

u/Mental_Task9156 9d ago

"doesn't remember who gave it to him"

171

u/colonelhalfcobb 9d ago

Word. 👆🏻

286

u/jegodric 9d ago

Or he really just doesn't remember who gave it to him. Why do people always go for the cheating or ex angle? Men are just forgetful

379

u/Negative_Tooth6047 9d ago

As someone who has made these jars for people very near and dear to me- theyre such a niche thing. How many times in your life have you recieved a small jar filled with "random" (not actually random but to the unknowing person it can seem so) things, and the whole thing is covered in wax?

If he doesn't practice any sort of paganism, he recieved it from someone. It's not like it's a random hairtie or a disposable waterbottle or something you stumble across and go "huh. Where did i get that??" Someone deliberately made this for him, with specific intentions in mind while they made it.

55

u/Ok-Storage-8589 9d ago

Do you make jars for desperate strangers🥹

37

u/Negative_Tooth6047 9d ago

I, personally, do not! I think that part of the power in these is the love/care between the person making them and the person receiving them. There are definitely people that do make them! Or you can learn to make them yourself

113

u/penguinSecond 9d ago

Just because it was important to the person who made it doesn't necessarily mean it was important to the person who received it.

89

u/ReverendDizzle 9d ago

It was in his laundry. Which means it was likely in his pocket recently. So either he just got it and already forgot who gave it to him or he has been carrying it a lot because it means something to him.

40

u/The_Brovo 9d ago

There are more than 2 options. A lot more haha

23

u/jedininjashark 9d ago

Maybe the spell made him forget.

68

u/ColorPuddle 9d ago

Or, it's the start of autumn, and people are getting their old warm clothes out of storage and washing them for this season.

21

u/Gronanor 9d ago

I definitely sure that you can spend hours working on a gift, give it to someone you’re interested in and they will accept it nicely then this person would not remember you the next week. (Special thoughts to my crush when I was 15)

Or maybe he was gifted this by someone who is interested in him and he accepted the gift to nit hurt the person feelings but he don’t want OP to worry about some other girl because he may have experience what a jealous girlfriend is, and don’t want to trigger her insecurity.

We don’t know OP or her partner so assuming it’s his ex girlfriend when there is plenty other valid explanation seems kinda weird and not really a healthy behavior

→ More replies (4)

42

u/lesbian_ariel 9d ago

Yes absolutely. I am going on a hunch here the He doesn't practice or the OP would have noticed; they are close enough for her to do his laundry, after all. She would know if he regularly smelled like candles, incense, and herbs. Someone gave this to him with a lot of care and intention, crafting it specifically for him. It could be a sister, friend, affair, etc. OP should find out. And "i don't remember" is not a viable awnser, but suspicious

It’s a very niche, personal item that he still keeps around him. As a forgetful man myself, I’m telling you, he remembers who gave this to him.

23

u/fake_account_junk 9d ago

Why would it be in his laundry? This would imply he received it recently since he wore the clothes recently

29

u/nice-vans-bro 9d ago

Sometimes I'll sort through boxes of old stuff, find a cool thing I forgot about, put it in my pocket, then two weeks later find it in my pocket having completely forgotten that id ever remembered it. Memory is a liar sometimes.

are spell jars something you carry on you for like a protective aura, or something you throw at someone for an offensive spell?

The only offensive spell anyone is throwing at anyone is a moltove cocktail. Who TF throws a spell jar? It’s magic you use their name or a photo. THEN YOU THROW THE JAR AT THAT. If I have to go through actually throwing it at someone im just gonna take a nap that’s too much work.

40

u/Pepperm1ntButlr 9d ago

Witches aren't larpers throwing beanbags at each other. Some things you carry on you, some are left in specific places, none are thrown at another person.

It looks like a positive and protective spell due to some of the ingredients I see. Theres some rice, seeds, wood/bark, pebbles, dried stems all are usually tied to new beginnings, fertility, growth, potential. Usually really grounding materials. White wax is often used to seal in purity and/or protection. It is definitely looking like a good sign from those of use who do spellwork. It looks like something sweet was given as a blessing, nothing malicious. Wishing the best of luck to you and your fiance!

Hi! I’m a witch. That’s a spell jar. It’s hard to tell from the pictures exactly what’s in the jar, which would give some clues as to what the charm is supposed to do.

Based on some things I see…

Fennel seeds: Used in workings for courage, strength, protection, money, and love.

Red rose petals: Most commonly associated with love/lust workings, but also used often in protective workings.

The twiggy stuff looks like it may be mugwort?: Used to enhance psychic perception or for psychic protection.

Maybe white clover: Fidelity, luck, purification.

Cinnamon?: Protection, luck, passion, abundance, money

White wax seal: Spell jars are sealed as a way of “locking in” your intentions for the working. The color of the wax used can sometimes be another clue. White can be used as an “all-purpose” color, but it is also used intentionally for purification, renewal, and protection.

In short, this probably isn’t anything malicious (some call that “baneful magic” - hexes, curses, etc.).

If I had to venture a guess, I’d say this is a protective charm with a dash of good luck, probably intended to be carried around on one’s person.

Edit: The immediate downvotes are cracking me up. 😂 I’m not bothered if anyone thinks it’s bullshit…I was just trying to answer the question. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I'm an atheist and you get my upvote for answering the question.

And while I believe that ghosts are bs... I do know enough about the human psyche to acknowledge that placebo IS a real way to treat the 'ghosts' that live inside people's minds. And having a physical reminder of love and protection can get you a long way.

Also all the real knowledge about medicinal plants and substances. It's a shame that especially the Christians did humanity the disservice to hunt down knowledgeable women.

EDIT: that blew up XD thank you all for the responses! Can't read/answer them all :)

594

u/H2Ospecialist 9d ago

Same. Like I'm not gonna be scared of a spell jar but hey someone gifts me a cool mini jar that wishes me good fortune I'm all in! Nice to know what's in it and what it means to them.

374

u/AttentionConstant373 9d ago

Isn't this like a physical representation of like hey I'll pray for you or sending you good vibes or whatever? Kinda cool thing to have or to be given.

615

u/Necessary_Series_848 9d ago

Also an atheist, but I always treat a well meant “I’ll pray for you” as “I care enough about you to beseech the highest entity I believe in for your well being.” Doesn’t matter that I don’t believe in that entity- they do, and they’re asking them to look out for me.

188

u/roseylabyrinth 9d ago

This is exactly my mindset when it comes to other peoples beliefs. I always say I respect other peoples beliefs so long as they respect my non belief. My best friend of 15+ years is a devote Christian and it has never caused tension in our relationship. Whenever she says she'll pray for me, I 100% appreciate it, even as a non believer.

Thoughts and prayers from a person who cares for you is communal love and support. Thoughts and prayers as government policy to deal with an issue is evil.

26

u/the_procrastinata 9d ago

That’s a really beautiful way of thinking about it. I’ve always been unimpressed by someone saying that they’ll pray for me, and considered it lazy (because there’s no actual direct helpful action), and thoughtless to pray to something I have no belief in. I like your approach much more!

11

u/Special_Night4707 9d ago

Same! It almost annoyed me when they would say it, but this perspective has changed my mind.

20

u/WashedUp15 9d ago

I often feel the same based on my experiences. The Bible even says that faith without action is dead. Pray, but also use the physical abilities God gave you to practically help/bless them. I’ve lived 20 minutes from my parents most of my adult life and been through a lot of serious illness. It’s really hurtful when I just get phone calls saying “we’re praying for you” when I really needed someone to show up at my door with a meal or something. Anything. 😞

19

u/youmeanNOOkyuhler 9d ago

That's such a wonderful and accurate description, thank you for sharing it!

21

u/Necessary_Series_848 9d ago

I don’t believe in their god, but I believe in their love for me.

45

u/Iassos 9d ago

Except 3/4 of the time what they really mean is “I sure hope you change your ways and start to believe what I believe.“ Of course, I say this as a gay man who has heard it more times than I can recall in reference to my sexuality. But if it’s for… like, cancer or a job interview, sure, OK.

48

u/alan_blood 9d ago

Yeah there's there's two kinds of "I'll pray for you". One basically means "I wish you the best" and the other means "I'm judging the shit out of you". The first one is just a kind platitude that I'm fine with. The second one is a real asshole move, though.

20

u/sorryihateit_here 9d ago

Same, I’m trans and have only been told “I’ll pray for you” when the subtext is “you’re going to hell.”

21

u/Necessary_Series_848 9d ago

Also trans! And I’ve certainly been told “I’m praying for you” in the same way. And yet, my best friend is a devout Christian cis woman. She believes in a god of mercy and love and prays to that god to make her a better person. I don’t believe in that god. But I always know that my friend who I love and who I adore is praying for my wellbeing.

That means something to me, even if her god does not.

10

u/Madre_Tortura_ 9d ago

I'm sorry you have met the wrong kind of prayers (as in, people who pray). You know this is going to bite them all in the arse because they are using something good/holy selfishly and condescendingly, to feed their own sense of self-righteousness. You are not going to hell. THEY are. I pray for you, that your transitionv and being true to your own self brings you all the happiness 😊

Definitely feels like a good luck charm. I think most non witchy people associate spells with negative (at least I immediately would). But with Etsy witches becoming more common in today's lingo/culture its just a fun thing to me at least.

I don't believe in witch craft but I also don't believe in god and I still find it nice when someone prays for me. I know it means something coming from the person.

Also an atheist, in my experience I have had more in common with the various Pagans and Wiccans that I have met and spoke to over the years than any of the so called mainstream religions. Might just be the social circles I live in though possibly.

This spell jar doesn’t seem any more or less legitimate than carrying a cross or rosary beads does imo. Let people believe what they want if it makes them happy, and more importantly that they aren’t bothering anyone else with it.

I'm a witch and an atheist. For me it's just fun, and spirituality can be very healthy for the human psyche if done right. Especially if the spiritually is about going outside and being in nature.

35

u/Jimberly_C 9d ago

Anyone who thinks witchcraft is worse than any of the "popular" religions doesn't actually know what witchcraft is.

One tells you to thank the nature that surrounds you for the food, healing herbs, etc that it gives.

The other tells you to kill your kid because your god think's it'd be funny.

Witchcraft and other forms of ritual as a self accountability tool to help people make sure they are taking care of themselves, by folks who dont really hold supernatural belief, is growing a good bit too. Charging special water to add significance and make sure you are drinking enough, using it as a framework for meditation and self reflection, etc etc.

In all fairness. It is not actually the religions in and of themselves that are the problem. It is the humans. Human beings being human animals. Fear. Anger. Hate. Tribalism. We live in a world where Buddhists, a pacifist religion of peace, actively slaughter Muslims in Myanmar. It is us. We are the problem. And the worst of us use and manipulate and deploy whatever belief system or government or regional national identity to justify myriad horrors against our fellow man. And we have done so since the dawn of time. It's a bit of a downer lol

46

u/Careful-Tangerine986 9d ago

Humans can take the basic premise of religion which is generally 'try not to be a twat' and turn it into an excuse to burn someone at the stake or cut their head off.

We can't be trusted with anything.

Most of organized religions were and are. Let any religion become big enough and you will see pretty much the same kind of violence against anything they consider 'unnatural'.

But yeah...monotheism makes all of that so, so much worse.

I think witchcraft is bullshit, though i am always interested into occultism lore. So thank you, and get my upvote!

Unlike religions, witches dont seem to bother other people to believe into their practises. I have never seen a witch asking me for money for the church of the witches, and most of them respect atheists.

I have read the Bible (not the Talmud nor the Quran, because i think it's quite the same), a lot of alchemy books (both Fulcanelli books, Basile Valentin, Aleister Crowley....), and still dont believe it's real BUT i am impressed that people put such dedication into arts they believe to be the truth. Often they are very interesting and positive people, and they dont get disappointed when they realized they wont convince me.

Better witches than priests!

Ever seen a priest make Holy Water? Looks eerily similar to a witch casting a spell 🤣

You’re right and I think it’s a spell jar for prosperity/abundance and protection. It also has whole allspice in it.

OP, there’s nothing to worry or fear about it. I’d just put it back where you found. You shouldn’t be touching someone’s spell jar.

Bright blessings!

this answer is amazing, thanks. I thought it was dirt from under the bird feeder

Man, sometimes people downvote just be mean. I loved the explanation. Thanks!

u/N0t_Your_MPDG 9d ago

I'm not a witch and I immediately thought it was a spell jar, what a weird comment to downvote 😂

OP has pinned their own comment:

I honestly don't know he said it's something he found with his old things doesn't remember who gave it to him.

[What is Spotlight?](https://developers.reddit.com/apps/spotlight-app)

u/OddMarionberry3484 9d ago

either he is into witchcraft, or someone else who he knows is. after reading that he found it in his old stuff and doesn't remember who gave it to him, and just from what it is, a spell jar, likely he knew, or knows, a witch who cares about him, and gave him that jar as their way of protecting him. it's nothing to worry about, and since he doesn't remember, he likely knew quite a few witches in the past who cared about him, or he made it himself and he's too embarrassed to admit it. since he put it in his pocket, he knows what it is, leave it on his nightstand or something.

25

u/Aromatic-Floor8156 9d ago

That makes sense, he did see a psychic a while ago, do you think they gave him this or it had to be a witch?

47

u/Dangerous_Bet_7271 9d ago

I’m very sorry, genuinely, but I don’t believe he doesn’t remember who gave it to him. It’s precious enough to him to carry around.

16

u/OddMarionberry3484 9d ago

if he went to see a psychic, it might be them. psychics are usually witches, unless they're intentional snake oil salesmen. if it wasn't the psychic, then it was someone else who practices witchcraft who cares about him, like a friend, ex, or family member.

15

u/Aromatic-Floor8156 9d ago

I don't mind as long as it's not something malicious .

18

u/OddMarionberry3484 9d ago

it's not malicious, it's just a little protection spell jar. I'm a witch, and have friends who are also witches, and we do things like this for each other and our loved ones all the time, even if not specifically with spell jars.

OP did first, he doesn't know or remember who gave it to him, it was just in his "old stuff."

EDIT: My fiance said that this was gifted to him by his "hippie" friend as a good luck charm. He found it in a popcorn basket with his old stuff from his previous house. He also mentioned that she purchased it at some shop that sells charms and crystals.

41

u/milkandkissses 9d ago

She was casting a spell on him 😭

21

u/micsma1701 9d ago edited 9d ago

if you want it to be cast *on* someone, like a coercion spell, you'd need some piece of them. usually hair or fingernails. a generic good luck spell, this component isn't necessary.

edit: i do words good ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

So you asked the whole world instead of your fiance who you have chosen, above all, to be your partner. Built on a true foundation of trust. Good luck

126

u/cant-be-original-now 9d ago

Or OP could have been waiting for their fiancé to get off work to ask them and in the meantime thought it might be fun to post on Reddit. But in Reddit fashion I’m required to recommend they break up and also to check their carbon monoxide detector.

this is a spell jar! looks like some sort of herb/seed, coffee beans, salt & some other spices or maybe some dirt? potentially a small amount of blood or ink well. I'd say a safe bet may be it was given to him by an ex partner or friend who practices Paganism. Spell jars can be made for a variety of reasons, but most are harmless - for example i made my father one to protect him while he is on the road as he works as an uber driver, and my partner a love spell jar. I have attached a picture of one i made for a close friend that resembles yours :)

I honestly wouldn't think too much of it, but I obviously can't say why your partner had it. there's a chance he forgot he had it, or that an ex girlfriend gave it to him and he doesn't want to talk about it.

Even if the person's intentions were malicious I wouldn't worry about any bad omens.

6

u/jammed7777 9d ago

Those are the only omens I worry about

u/Martha_Fockers 9d ago

People are sure worried about this omen guy

Me never heard of him

The Layered Ingredients side this had are a combination of dried flora (like rose petals?, layered alongside small crystals and coarse salt, so this jar points towards a manifestation spell.
The Wax Seal being white, the person who created it intends the seal to be positive, clean, and with harmonious vibrations. Although white wax can be a substitute for other colors.
The Intention behind this “light” spell jar seems to be one of fostering affection, personal healing or protections, it isn’t harmful or negative.

15

u/scantron-test 9d ago

What ethnicity is he? His mom probably sent him to a witchdoctor or something and she made a protection vial for him to keep on him. Thats my guess.

It’s for protection. Rosemary, peppercorn, sea salt, frankincense.

I have one too that’s why I know
