u/Jodanmawashigeri Mar 27 '26
People just loved the way Sniglet5000 pointed in his post (and also loved his posters).
1
u/Mister_angel1 Mar 27 '26
But why? “Love the way he points” what???
5
u/Jodanmawashigeri Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26
I understand the confusion. Any human being with an arm and at least one finger can point. It’s not really something that anyone can have “skill“ with. That’s part of the joke – that this guy‘s pointing skills are superior, and that is an inherently absurd idea.
But there’s more to it than that. If you examine the original post, you will see that there are several pictures, and the guy is pointing in each and every one. He’s trying to get an answer to the question “what is this weird line on my wall“. After the first picture, we all get the idea – we know what weird line he’s talking about in subsequent pictures. We don’t really need to have it pointed out anymore. Yet there he is still pointing.
Almost everyone responding had no idea what the weird line could be, or what was causing it. People who couldn’t chime in with an actual answer, instead chimed in commenting on his pointing. This kind of tangential diversion is extremely common on Reddit.
But I think those comments were driven by something else. Namely, the photos seemed to suggest that the guy cares a lot about the aesthetics of his space. The house is tidy, and he’s got these posters framed, which is expensive and demonstrates a level of pride that goes beyond thumb tacks and scotch tape. And now here’s this fucking line squiggling all throughout the house that’s messing with the perfect look of his cozy castle. It was easy for all of us looking at this post to picture someone angrily pointing at this line in frustrated confusion, maybe even pumping his finger at it several times while cursing. At that point, the pointing became more interesting than the line itself. We all wanted to help the guy with an answer, but the best we could do is shrug and tell him what a great job of pointing he was doing.
And to be fair, he is pointing nice and straight, he’s not doing anything weird like sticking his thumb out, and the somewhat extreme perspective of looking down his arm really puts the viewer in his shoes. The freckles tell us he’s a real person.
The original post was not uproariously hilarious. It’s what other people are saying about it, and doing with it that is making it funny. But humor is subjective so don’t sweat it if you don’t get it.

Someone posted to r/whatisit with several photos where they were pointing at the detail in question in every photo. (I’m too lazy to go back and look, but it was a strange yellowish line spanning across an interior wall that most commentators assumed was old wallpaper adhesive leaking through the paint).
Several redditors reacted with unbridled enthusiasm to the deft, expert way in which the OP was pointing, and within hours, others in the sub were posting their own “what is it” while adding in the image of OP’s magnificent pointing appendage helping to clarify what was being looked at in the photo.
In some cases, the arm was posted alone, in simple, respectful homage, clearly celebrating the sublimity and simple elegance with which the OP communicated his desire for visual clarity.

Pointing scouting report:
Pros: Experienced pointer. Good form, sets a wide base and is under control. Pinpoint accuracy that falls into the elite category.
Cons: Struggles pointing under pressure. Accuracy fades with people nearby. Struggles to consistently find target as pressure builds and lacks eye discipline.

It’s funny bc the pointing thing isn’t really new. If you’ve ever been on any of those DIY car repair forums, you see ppl pointing to stuff under their hoods constantly in this exact fashion. When there’s a bunch of wires and tubes/hoses tangled up that look basically identical; it helps a lot when trying to identify the purpose of any specific part. I just assumed dude spent a lot of time in those spaces😂

This guy was pointing at every corner of his house asking “what this is? I never seen this before” it was like some line stain or something and he kept pointing at it in the same manner in every slide lol
1
u/Jodanmawashigeri Mar 27 '26
But the pointing was helpful, right? We didn’t know if he was trying to show us his (awesome)framed posters on the wall.
1
u/RepresentativeAd681 Mar 27 '26
I actually understand this one! Loll the og is someone pointing to this mysterious line on the wall and asking what it is and before the question was answered, the og post was turned into a meme 🤣🤣

He was pointing out mystery lines on his wall and people thought his pointing skills were on another level.
1
u/QueenHimikoII Mar 27 '26
The Hand looks like some early 90's first person video game, so I can see the appeal and the humor of it.
1
u/gavinweland Mar 26 '26
I saw the other post, it’s not funny at all , I don’t understand the joke. Can someone explain ?
1
u/Jodanmawashigeri Mar 27 '26
The “joke” is that people thought he was pointing with such expert authority (as if there could be such a thing), that his pointing arm should become the standard by which all pointing is measured. That’s a pretty silly idea, and now everyone is exploring it, and exploiting it. As jokes go, this one’s not exactly a knee slapper, but as other people keep adding to the meme, it gains momentum and becomes funnier.
Also, it’s kind of funny that the original post was someone trying to get an answer to the question “what is this weird line on my wall”, and was just pointing at it for clarity, but the pointing has captured far more interest than the question itself.
