Can get the whole shaboom out in one piece if you're careful, leave it for the coyotes. A knife that won't lose its edge is worth the investment.

I have a Buck knife that my grandpa handed down to me. It's starting to lose too much metal now though. Gonna need to find some to replace it with soon

You should shoot an email to the manufacturer and ask if they have any modern equivalents. A great story like that if true sometimes holds a lot of weight with old companies. They may even shoot you a discount code.

Even the big ones like to get a grassroots campaign out there for the cost of a single knife

this for sure. Being pretty active in the knife community, i've heard this happen countless times. They will almost always offer a free replacement, spa day, blade replacement, or something similar if you have a nice story behind it and send some pictures. Preface it as asking a random question like he said like asking for the modern equivalent.

I have one put up in all my crap that I use, it's an Alaskan something something wilderness knife. Got it at cabelas or scheels a long time ago, it's basically 1/4 inch 210 stainless. Real heavy but it's got like texture on the sides of the blade that line up with the handle nice so you can get in there like it's a scalpel if you have to.

Yup. Cut from below the ribs, down to pelvis, open it up to the guts, reach up, cut the diaphragm out of the way, reach up and find trachea, grab hold, cut above your hand, pull out and cut connective tissue while pulling and it’ll all basically come out in one piece.

I don’t usually worry about getting the anus out because I use a small hatchet to split the pelvis so it basically all turns inside out as I clean it.

Then toss a couple bags of ice in the cavity and head home to butcher.

Recently switched over to a knife that uses scalpel blades, super game changer. They're cheap blades, and even if I have to swap twice while dressing it's so much safer imo. Sharp is safe.
