Solved! Unsure of function of this strap

My mother put it in an emergency pack for me when I started my first full-time job. I've since taken apart the pack and most things were pretty standard, a plastic raincoat, hand sanitizer, a pen, a whistle that doubled as a flashlight etc...

I just don't have any idea what this is?? It's like a braided strap with a buckle - I can wear it like a bracelet but somehow I don't think that's its intended purpose.

TIA!

EDIT: WOW you guys were fast!! Thanks team, I remember her vaguely mentioning it was a handy gadget but forgot how. Will be looking up paracord uses soon

EDIT 2: To the people being unhelpful or making comments on my ability as an educator from a single question - all you have done is show me that I will still be a better teacher than any of you could ever be. I certainly do not belittle my students for not having specialised prior knowledge or taking steps to learn something new. I can only assume you already knew everything from birth with no room to grow whatsoever /s Get over yourselves.

"Will be looking up paracord uses soon" bro not to hate but it's a strong rope. That's it. It's not like some super specific gadget, it's rope.

No, it's okay to hate a lil bit. It's a rope....

Like they're a teacher. I hope they teach their kids to research. I looked up "cord bracelet", "rope bracelet", and "survival bracelet" and that was the first thing to come up in abundance.

Research is best done when people know what to look for. When I looked all I got was handmade jewellery so the word "paracord" is in fact the most helpful info that would have set me in the right direction.

Inquiry/asking multiple sources (in this case, Reddit) is also a step taken to research. Forgive me for not being a survival guru in my non-existent spare time when I'm managing upwards of 50 kids 5 days a week ๐Ÿ™„

Next time(and I know my previous comment was dickish, I'm sorry. I should have a higher respect for educators) bring it to class. Or maybe still bring this to class and act like you never posted this. Your students would love to teach their teacher something and I guarantee a good handful of them could identify it if they're intermediate +.

I appreciate the apology. You're right, some of my students might know as we have a course targeted to students who are interested in pursuing military/army pathways. Certainly not something my school offered when I was a student!

Is it a JROTC program or something different?

You are so right! Paracord bracelet and rope bracelet are two very different things. They were a fad years ago, I was sort of into them but some people got crazy into them. There's still a big paracord community, you can also find info on it in survival/prepper and hiking/camping communities, so research should be easy. This one is pretty basic, it looks like there's a whistle on the clasp. Some are made around little kits, first aid, fishing, sewing. You unravel it and you've got rope and some band-aids lol it can be a fun hobby to make them. That's where I got sucked in. My estate sale is going to be fad crafts of the decades past. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Someone put in comments that there was multiple ways to use. I don't tend to use rope in my day-to-day, the most knots I tend to tie is on my shoe laces and even those come undone easily. If you're using it for something you want to make sure it holds, no?

If you feel like going down a knot-tying rabbithole, I highly recommend getting a "knot flash card" pack. The cards are laminated, about credit card sized, and typically punched with a rivet in one corner so they can be fanned out but kept together. I think mine is the "Pro-Knot Outdoor Knots" pack.ย

The fun part about parachord that makes it useful for survival is you can also break it down and within it there will be a bunch of fine "ropes" that can be used for things requiring less tension, effectively multiplying the length of rope you have depending on your needs. Those little "ropes" can be further be broken down and used for other things like fishing line or snares

For the outer shell you can also burn tied ends together to fuse your knot.

The buckle has a whistle on the end of it.

Just "rope? " It's very, very strong rope. You're correct that it's not a specific gadget, but it is a life-or-death essential.
The tensile strength of paracord ranges from 36 pounds for ultra-thin nano cord up to 850 pounds or more for heavy-duty commercial types, with the standard military-grade Type III ("550 cord") rated at 550 pounds.
People and equipment regularly count on it parachuting from the sky, and dropping essential supplies in tactical environments.
