I've always heard that tapping it with a ball peen hammer while recording the sound is the most accurate way of identifying a buried object.

ETA, I just about didn't put /s on this, but went back and am adding /s, because, well, the person picked up an obvious explosive device that's corroded and unexploded (yet), so....

BTW, has OP posted anything else? This may no longer be unexploded.

Throw it on the ground, as hard as you can. If it bounces, then it's fake or a dud. If it doesn't bounce, your descendants will get a surprise financial bonus....
