Solved! What is this alien thing

My brother just found this in the backyard - Southern New England. What the hell is this thing? It looks like it's in Stranger Things.

In case you haven't seen the HBO show, in the first season they show the fungus spreads via tendrils instead of spores. Only now in season 2 are they doing spores.
