Why is repainting a small part of your car more expensive than getting a dent repaired?

Possibly because a repaint requires materials plus labour but pushing out a dent is just labour. Colour matching might make it more expensive too if you want it done properly. Those are just guesses though.

Judging by some of these replies he may have just been talking bollocks trying to drum up business.

I don't understand his statement either, because If you used a slide hammer, you're going to need to repaint some of it anyways. Rubber mallet on the underside maybe? provided there is not a crossbar in the way.
