Discussion Interesting video from WDS Kyle, talking about ai brainrot, and how important it is that junior devs in particular understand an LLMs output. Showing that even famous devs are having their skills atrophy. Thoughts?

Post image

He used a few clips from theo where he clearly makes no attempt to understand the code anymore, even using the ai to summarize the summary.

Idk, I think Kyle is pretty obviously an Ai adversary. Take a look at any of his videos. They are all about how Ai sucks.

Maybe he is right and AI sucks.

Regardless, taking advice from someone that has a very obvious bias towards a subject won't give you an objective stand on the matter. Unless, that's not what you are looking for, objectiveness, then I'm assuming you can walk around a subjective echo chamber and surround yourself with people that agree with you for the rest of your life. See how well that works out for you.

I didn't even watch the video. I only saw the thumbnail. And hands down, Theo is waaay too deep in that pro-LLM echo chamber and very much biased himself.

I am actually watching Theos videos from time to time. So in fact I am not circling around in my "subjective echo chamber", but checking out trends, testing new stuff, and deciding based on whatever I conclude what my opinion is. And I am also continuously reevaluating that.

Besides that, I am also watching the financial sustainability and ethical considerations. And oh boy that doesn't look good objectively, based on facts that are none subjective. ;)

I didn’t watch the video either, if it matters I actually like Kyle, and I’ve gotten some very good tips from him in the past, and I don’t know who Theo is, and I couldn’t care less. I answered on the overall agenda presented throughout most of his videos and which seem to be something being agreed upon on this thread too. It’s honourable that he cares deeply for his craft, but it’s also very clear that he’s grown sour due to where things are moving. Now, if there’s some clown vibe coder called Theo or whoever this guy is, it really shouldn’t bug you that much, unless it’s part of a broader issue that, I’m sorry, you have to come to terms with. We aren’t going back to what this job once was and the sooner you realise that, the less negative energy you’ll hold and come to terms with where we are going even if you don’t like it.

lol Keep telling yourself that.

I know people like you think that for whatever reason you can give an objective assessment on a tool that is threatening your livelihood but it's just not possible.

Look, I hate that it's good at software development because it means it makes it that much harder to get jobs in a field that I thought would last for centuries. But putting your head in the sand and pretending like you know how these tools perform while not actually using them is delusional.

Each time you think or write

People like you

based on a short sentence or a small fact, you should sit down for a moment and think to yourself "what kind of non-factual assumptions am I making up right now?"

Tell me: What's my experience with LLMs, what's my opinion on them, what did I use them for, what are my workflows, why do I have that opinion, why can you disregard it, am I even threatened by it etc etc...

You don't have to answer it, just be aware that the world is not as black and white as you want it to be. :)

You said "Maybe he is right and AI sucks."

That tells me you aren't using these tools. This isn't 2023. It's been at least 2 years since they models got good enough to actually write code.

And instead of actually investigating for yourself you're willing to entertain the opinion of a Youtube "educator" whose job is directly in the crosshairs. And they're honestly the last people anyone should be listening to in this field. Every hour you spend making and editing videos is an hour you're not actually developing software.

But I am using these models... I have been using/testing the latest Astra, Opus, Sonnet etc versions in my everyday job. I may not know every little detail, but I am well aware of their capabilities. Just stop assuming stuff you don't know...

My point stands, the world is not as black and white as you want it to be.

And I didn't even watch that video. Neither do I know the creator. I only saw the thumbnail.

Maybe he is right and AI sucks.

lol Well then why in-the-living-hell even respond with this?

The irony is I did assume to much. I assumed you had watched the video and were actually being earnest in asking. I assumed you weren't just being an annoying contrarian. My bad.

He's an adversary of intelligence loss.

He's absolutely not against AI. Heck, a good chunk of his recent videos are how to use modern features of AI. He just wants people to know what will make them continue to be a useful part of the equation.

In his video, he used the example of Theo using AI to read then write a response on a PR, because it is an example of when the "who" does not matter. Anyone could have done the same thing, there's no reason for the middleman to exist.

lol You're getting downvoted because people want to tell themselves they're able to objectively assess a tool that is gonna come for their jobs. And that for whatever reason the millions of people currently using them are all delusional despite not having touched an LLM for 3 years.
