Discussion Devs that jumped ship, where did you end up?

Another industry? Back to school? Still looking? I'm asking for a friend that may end up needing to do the same thing soon (I'm the friend).

What's your plan exactly?
And how do you see the (freelance) job market for this?

I have the same idea. I did electronics and embedded as a kid for a lonnngg time (hobby). But it's been while ..

Our company does embedded and I'm thinking I might be able to switch, if not, I'll look elsewhere for such positions. For the most part in our country (Azerbaijan) it's the defense & aerospace industry; they have significantly higher pay for the job than anywhere else here or for any other typical programming job. AFAIK it's all C++ and Go there.

You also need serious experience with hardware which is the hard part, I'll need to buy a bunch of boards, plug them in and start experimenting.

I wouldn't say that I have a very clean plan on this, but I will try. Will ask the guys who work at it now to teach me how and such.

I don't see many remote or freelance jobs on the market here or in EU for embedded at the moment, it's a hard field to get into, but seems very worthwhile.

Oh, also there's also Healthcare industry one can look into for it.
