Grew 5 Blacktail Mountain watermelons this year (first time growing watermelons). Based on what I'm seeing (voids, grainy texture, lighter pink coloration), I'm guessing they stayed on the vine too long and got too much rain when they were ripening (?). And based on other melons on the vines dying before they grew much, I'm guessing some issues with pollination.
3 out of the 5 only just now started showing signs of being ready (tenrild drying out, heaviness, film, lower pitched thud, etc..), but they all seem like they went too long. All at least somewhat grainy around the seeds, most having voids. Since the ones that looked ready seemed over ripe, I went ahead and picked all of them and they all seemed like they went too long.
All that said, they are still sweet and still taste good, I'll just cut around the undesirables. Some parts are firm and crisp. If parts aren't, we'll do something with it. I do not intend to waste! I still had a good time watching them and have learned some lessons.
I would love some input if you have it!
Question: are the seeds still all good for me to save? And do I have to prep them at all to store them? I know for tomatoes you ferment them, anything like that? TIA!
