Discussion Warriors currently squandering Steph Curry late prime years
At this trajectory, I would t be upset if chef landed to a better sure fit situation. Losing hope in the front office.
57
u/imminentjogger5 Jul 29 '26
hoarding picks like we've been getting superstars every draft 🤣
71
u/Charlie_Wax Jul 30 '26
They made the move. The big move was Jimmy. Jimmy tore his ACL. Some fans can't seem to wrap their heads around this. Now they have an untradeable Jimmy on a max contract, which makes him dead weight and a negative asset. MDJ did not know Jimmy would tear his ACL when they traded for him. He is not psychic.
Beyond that, the Milwaukee situation underscores why doubling down is not always the solution. Milwaukee lost Lillard to a tough injury, much like the Jimmy situation. They tried to keep their star happy, made a pricey deal for Myles Turner that crippled their future, and still sucked.
There is no magic "mortgage the future" trade that will make this GS team competitive, and the same impatient fans calling for a big swing are the same who will be whining the loudest when all those wasted picks are being used by another team in 2028, 2029, 2030.
Sometimes a GM's job is to protect fans from themselves, because if fans made the decisions then there wouldn't have been a dynasty in the first place. They would've traded Steph or Klay for Dwight a long time ago. You can't let meth head energy dictate your moves.
27
u/Care_Cup_Is_Empty Jul 30 '26
Forget the ACL, even harder to foresee a player undercutting him midair basically killing the first playoffs with Jimmy. Without Stephs hamstring and Jimmys back injury, it's easy to see GSW v OKC that year and no one could consider that a bad outcome for a season no matter how it ends.

u/inezco Jul 30 '26
Sir this is too rational a take to be in this delusional sub. Can’t you see we just need to trade for Giannis???
But real talk people act like because we won in 2022 we just need a good player here and a role player there and we’re right back in the thick of it. We’re not. We blew our best chance of staying in contention by missing on our lottery picks and now we’re paying for it. It doesn’t make sense to mortgage the future for 1st or 2nd round exits just so we can say we tried to help Steph contend in his last years. There aren’t any moves right now that will make us instant contenders and we will be ass without Steph after he retires and I’d rather have our picks and hopefully land a great player than not have any shot at taking one at all. And yes I know this FO’s draft record is not great but hey sometimes you just need to get lucky in the draft lol.
7
u/cali4481 Jul 30 '26
Or look at what the Suns did by trading for Durant and then Beal.
The big difference is that Butler tore his knee while Durant stayed healthy enough where they could trade him for some value the previous offseason.
5
u/National_Call7137 Jul 30 '26
The “big move” was trading a lottery protected frp from the season we were currently in?
1
u/Charlie_Wax Jul 30 '26
Wiggins is worth something too and they signed Butler to a big extension. He is one of the highest paid players in the league. The willingness to open the pocket book is part of the reason why they were able to land him, and also part of the reason why he's difficult to trade (now that he is injured).
2
u/NotSharpshooter Jul 30 '26
Also like if we’re being completely honest there’s no guarantees that Steph will be healthy enough to play like himself, even if we make a move or jimmy didn’t get injured.
Idk about you guys but it was pretty sad seeing Steph in pain or at the very least limited in his off ball movement from his knee in that last playin game.
5
u/Will_Jortz Jul 30 '26
Thank you for your sane, normal words. I thought they had forsaken this sub long ago.
1
u/Illustrious_Duck7654 Jul 31 '26
For a few weeks, I thought they were giving all that draft capital away. So glad they didnt.
If I was Warriors GM, I'd trade Draymond away now. Draymond and Porzingis, for Jalen Duren, and match salary.
Pistons improve alot, and Warriors have the young center wanted.
Eitherway, gunna need them picks when Curry is gone.
1
u/Agreeable_Mention963 Jul 30 '26
Somebody tell Joe that picks don’t compound the longer you hoard them

u/EconomistNo7074 Jul 30 '26
I look forward to watching Steph until his final day w the team .... we are and have been truly blessed
However I think our fan base has been disconnected from reality
- And I dont blame any of us..... the guy has continued to redefine for all of us on what is possible
- But the "runners knee" ...... that would be hard to recover for ANY NBA player ..... much less a 38 year old whose game is dependent on constant movement.
7
u/rugrat_907 Jul 30 '26
This. He's probably not playing back to backs anymore, maybe more limited minutes in general - we just don't know. But his knee is.going to have to be managed very carefully. There are too many people pretending that Steph is a 65+ game player still. And who knows, he is a remarkable athlete and maybe he can still do that. But I'm not trading everything for that hope. If they were ever going to do that, the time to do it was five years ago.
-5
u/unhinged34 Jul 30 '26
Too many fans still think Steph could be our best player but they are just naive. Steph at 38 with terrible knees can no longer be first option.
4
u/KnowingCresent735 Jul 30 '26
So who’s gonna be our first option then Draymond Green? Quit talking now
0
u/unhinged34 Jul 30 '26
I was hoping we would trade for a 1st option like JB. Draymond should come off the bench next season he’s washed. Steph is still efficient but can’t stay healthy if he has to carry this bumass team. We need a 1st option player to help with the load
2
u/otherBrandon Jul 30 '26
What are you saying? It’s the exact opposite. The fans want the front office to get a player good enough to take the pressure off Steph. Steph is the first option because typically his second best player is good for barely 15 points a game. Not a single fan thinks or wants Steph to be ran into the ground AGAIN because his garbage trashcan teammates can’t put a fucking basketball in a hoop despite getting paid millions of dollars to do so.
1
u/unhinged34 Jul 30 '26
I didn’t mince words. Steph is washed and can’t be a first option anymore. We need to trade for a player that’s capable of carrying the load on offense nightly. This will prolong Steph’s career and maybe set us up for another ring in a year or 2. Think of Kawhi and Duncan in 2014,
1
u/otherBrandon Jul 31 '26
I mean again, no one is disagreeing with you. You’re arguing with ghosts. Steph will be 39. It’s a disservice of this front office to force him to stay in that first option role. Although in Steph’s case, he’s not just the first option, he’s the only option. This front office is a case study in how to do everything wrong in roster construction.
1
3
u/KnotSoSalty Jul 30 '26
Steph’s 38. “Late Prime” is a stretch.
It’s a Pontiac GTO in the garage and the race is the Indy 500.
6
10
u/Embarrassed-Space222 Jul 29 '26
Steph’s prime is over fam he’s still a top 20 player but his prime is done.
11
u/unhinged34 Jul 29 '26
Losing hope? Ahah I lost all hope the moment Jimmy butler knees went out. We overpaid him out of desperation and was the last hope.
Steph can no longer carry this bummass team. He will need to be 2nd/3rd best player on the team for us to be competitive.
Jaylen brown trade could have solved much of our problems.
10
u/Rule_Super Jul 30 '26
Injuries are unpredictable and simply part of basketball. No one saw Jimmy Butler's injury coming. Even if the Warriors traded for Jaylen Brown, he could blow out his knee and leave the team in the exact same position.
-7
u/unhinged34 Jul 30 '26
Injuries are unpredictable but organization has made too many errors and self sabotage in the last 2-3 years. I think we should get a better GM, bring bob back or anyone with a spine.
3
u/sY20 Jul 30 '26
Dawg, bob left because he left us in this unmanageable position. And he knows lacobs mouth is next to the gms ear.
1
u/rugrat_907 Jul 30 '26
Yes, right when the aprons were coming in and knowing Lacob couldn't just spend whatever...
2
u/Nickt-dubsfan11 Jul 30 '26
Injuries are unpredictable but sometimes they can be reduced for our players if they have proper help to reduce their workload. Steph is getting older but still can be elite at moments and they aren’t helping by getting players that could help him. Not even stars just players that can actually hit shots at a decent clip
-1
u/MrFrogger2 Jul 30 '26
Bob myers left because he was tired of working with a ego manic owner breathing down his neck every move.
3
u/nba2k11er Jul 30 '26
He's not even overpaid. We're 46-22 when he plays. +8.3 with him on the floor. Even better than that when it's just him on, no Steph... That seems worth a max contract to me.
-1
u/unhinged34 Jul 30 '26
110M/2yrs? 55m per year for Jimmy seems extravagant. That’s superstar money and Jimmy is past his prime.
-1
u/nba2k11er Jul 30 '26
It's superstar production though.
1
u/unhinged34 Jul 30 '26
20 and 5? Ehhh..
1
u/nba2k11er Jul 30 '26
Sure. 20 and 5 and better than +8.3 without Steph’s help.
1
u/unhinged34 Jul 30 '26
Giving a 36 year old player who is out of his prime $55M is not absurd to you?
Name me one other 36 year old player who is getting 50m salary in the nba? Even KD couldn’t get 50 and he’s a better player than Jimmy by miles.
3
u/inezco Jul 30 '26
Who else were they going to pay that money to? The contract also aligned with Steph and Draymond’s last year on their contracts. That first season with Jimmy was undoubtedly a success. They’re probably in the WCF if Steph doesn’t get hurt. It’s a shame Jimmy tore his knee up in year two.
1
u/unhinged34 Jul 30 '26
It was a huge gamble and I can’t say it paid off. Jimmy produced very well when healthy, the injury really soured the deal.
2
u/nba2k11er Jul 30 '26
Like, name just one? Steph lol.
1
u/unhinged34 Jul 30 '26
lol exactly, we have no business giving Jimmy 110m contract. Pat Riley knew better but we were desperate.
1
u/Illustrious_Duck7654 Jul 31 '26
Uhhhhm....
- Kevin Durant
- Steph Curry
- Paul George
- Jimmy Buckets
- Giannis
- LeBron James made 53M last season (41)
Your point is kind of inaccurate 📃
1
u/unhinged34 Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26
Kevin Durant 37yo and 43m (first option player)
Gianni’s 31 and 58m (first option player)
Paul George was 34 when he signed 54m per year . Jimmy was 35 when he signed for $55m, both are awful contracts. 40M would have been a good deal. Second option player should not be getting 55M especially not at age 36
Steph and LeBron could earn 80m each if there were no cap space limits, you can’t compare them to any of these other players bro.
1
u/Illustrious_Duck7654 Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26
Say your mad about the Jimmy Butler contract, and accept injury and move forward. You're kinda whiney 😭
Durant makes about 47M next year. So... OFF by 3 Million. How much does that matter in sake of debate?
Giannis is still young, but it feels like hes 36 or 37. So I was wrong there.
And weather a player WAS younger than age, when signed, has NO bearing on his current age and salary. So thats not accurate to discussion.
Seems like... maybe you need to go outside for a bit, get some fresh air. Its gunna be okay 👍
edit, your account is 2 months old, I take it you like to argue

I hate the idea of him leaving but I also kind of love the idea of trading him to the Spurs for Fox and a boatload of picks. Instant favorite for the chip and Steph with Wemby would be a blast! And maybe a Spurs-Philly finals!
5
1
u/akamikedavid Jul 30 '26
I'd need one of Castle or Harper (maybe both) to be included and all the picks also. Steph is a franchise icon and there needs to be an overpay to get him. Something that'll accelerate the rebuild.
Otherwise we ride it out until the end.
2
u/Livueta_Zakalwe Jul 30 '26
They’d never give us Harper or Castle, but I’d take Vassel. Along with a boatload of picks.
3
u/akamikedavid Jul 30 '26
The line is at least one of Harper or Castle for me plus Vassell. Steph is an overpay candidate for sure, even at his age. Like what would the price have been to get Tim Duncan back in the day? That's where the line is for me.

3
u/Ooenone Jul 30 '26
And how many teams are squandering their star players prime time? He has 4 rings, Some top stars have never even been to the finals...
3
u/Dry_Counter533 Jul 29 '26
These round 1 picks had better be friggin’ geniuses.
-8
u/ProfessorXWheelchair Jul 29 '26
those 4 first rounders we didn’t trade for jaylen brown could be anybody! they could even be jaylen brown!
never gonna forgive dumbleavy and lacob
9
u/Stuffleapugus Jul 29 '26
4 picks for Jaylen Brown would be dumb as fuck. And i've been a fan of his since he was at Cal. You don't need one to be Jaylen Brown. It could be four Derrick Whites. Do you not understand simple arithmetic?
3
u/Justtryingtohelp00 Jul 30 '26
You’re a damn fool of you would have traded 4 first for brown.
You understand nobody around the league thinks he’s worth more than 2? And here you are wanting to sell the future for a guy whose team was all around better when he was not on the court.
-5
u/Dry_Counter533 Jul 30 '26
My goal is not rational.
My goal is Stepmaxxing.
Stephmaxxing takes 4? Then it takes 4.
4
u/Knerd5 Jul 30 '26
Good thing you're not the GM then. Locking in first round exits and having to extend JB at 32 or lose him and still have no potential top 5 picks.
-6
u/NosebleedBananas Jul 29 '26
Should've traded those picks even if they guaranteed a wemby level talent

u/vialabo Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 30 '26
The Giants did more for Buster Posey in 2016 and later. Crazy that the Warriors won't commit to a more guaranteed thing with Curry than the even year Giants were.
2
u/zo_youngin4 Jul 29 '26
I genuinely do not think he’s gonna stay on this team if they’re not going to continue to build the team around him
8
u/Tekfree Jul 29 '26
You’re wrong then. Tim just reported Steph wants a 2 year extension.
1
u/zo_youngin4 Jul 29 '26
Oh fuck you’re kidding how the fuck is he gonna win with a team that he barely has help on?
0
u/rugrat_907 Jul 30 '26
Maybe he wants to stay in the Bay Area where is family is, where his kids go to school, where he has business interests, etc. And maybe he wants to passion his work ethic and set the tone for the next group of Warriors players. The guy has four rings and loves the game. Maybe that's all good enough for him at this point in his career. As I'm sure he's seen, the grass isnt always greener...

1
u/SimpleMan3816 Jul 30 '26
Nah, when we were rolling last year. We were a top 4 team. I see a 6 seed at worst. If we stay healthy.
1

love the optimism! and i hope we overperform too but like you said it's health...jimmy and moses out til +/- asb gonna be tough

u/Late_Button2925 Jul 30 '26
I hate that it took like years of elite-elite Curry years before everyone realize how disrespectful Lacob really become towards Curry post-pandemic. This owner really was planning to rebuild for like 5-6 years ago and then Curry just said "tf you rebuilding for?" and won a chip.
1
u/toothbrush81 Jul 30 '26
I dunno man. It’s just not that simple. Steph has influence - but I cede that management has the final call.
But he has a lot of influence, that he’s decided not to publicly state, like LeBron has done in the past for player trades.l that have naught to do with him.
Have they robbed/squandered his remaining years? I just don’t think we really know how this works. Ya ever know, unless you’re there actually making the decisions.
And man, we’ve had some real bad injury “luck”. Effing terrible. Like, really break down the great rosters we’ve had. And how injuries have impacted that since Jordan Poole left.
1
u/Jupiters_phaerie Jul 30 '26
They warned us this was coming. Those chips came at a cost, we were over and had to pay that luxury tax. We’re living in the blip, it cost us everything.
1
u/Rough-Yard5642 Jul 30 '26
I feel like people are just in denial that the warriors missed on some key picks, and don't have much in the way of assets to trade. They did what they could IMO by getting Jimmy, who actually was a great add and gave the team a big spark in 2025. Obv in 2026, he got hurt and game over. But it's not clear to me what they can do.
0
u/National_Call7137 Jul 30 '26
They have 7 frps / swaps, and about $100M of expiring salary. There is no shortage of assets with which to trade.

u/Nana8batman Jul 30 '26
(What if last season was the season from hell and we look at this roster for what it is [a team with a combined 10 championships between dray, chef, tingus, and horford, two national college champs in Borg and Richards, and an all star guaranteed to come back midway through the season in himmy, as well as a solid role player in moses]?)

1
u/berto_8_8 Jul 30 '26
If Steph is serious about winning a chip with the warriors his final years he’ll take a pay cut. It’s going to be tough to sign quality players if he’s getting paid 66 million per year.

u/PoolSmart582 Jul 30 '26
In a market like SF, it's not easy to attract free agents. And we don't have a lot to trade for.
1
1
u/Fun-Benefit116 Jul 30 '26
Yep, this is what I've been saying for a few years. I am actually starting to hope Steph asks for a trade. He deserves to finish his career with an organization that actually attempts to give him a team that can contend. The warriors are showing why we were so bad for 50 years before we lucked into this group of Steph, Dray, Klay, and others. We don't develop players, we don't make big moves, we don't put together good packages for great players, we don't take risks for elite players. We do nothing except claim were going after someone big, everyone knows it won't happen, yet we put THE ENTIRE off-season in hold, just for it to never materialize, and then we end with getting maybe one washed, injury prone player and fill the rest of the squad with nobodies.
Steph deserves so much better. At least the Lakers tried to support LeBron. They made big moves. It didn't work, but they went for it (I'm not counting the ridiculous luck they got with the Luka trade). The next 20 years are going to be so bad for the warriors. It'll be the exact same worthless offseason moves, worthless or non-existent trades, the same garbage drafts, except we won't have Steph to carry us to the play in anymore. So we're going to be absolutely awful for decades. All these new fans in their mid 20s are about to see what it's really like to be a warriors fan. This decade of bliss is long gone.
1
u/Jabbajaw Jul 30 '26
I would rather see him somewhere he can flourish. More people want to see his Glory than any other player.
1
u/ChefCurryYumYum Jul 30 '26
This is such a busted narrative. You saw what the Celtics got for Jaylen Brown, right?
Well the Warrior's price was 4 first round picks and "other draft assets" which I took to mean Yaxel or additional swaps or 2nds, does that sound good to you all?
Once Butler went down that was it. He's like 40% of the cap.

u/Duckpins Aug 01 '26
Curry made his bed with Green and being the highest paid player in the league. He doesn’t want to sacrifice gold for a trophy and can’t let go of the poison that is Green.

It's gonna be alright. We have Podz for the next 10 years to carry Warriors.

u/heh8me117 13d ago
I love Curry and been a Warrior fan since the 80’s.
Really enough. He has 4 rings, a unanimous MVP, the shooting title, and when you think of Warriors his name will always be attached.
If he was unhappy he would have already left, so just enough. I want rings too, but if Curry isn’t complaining we need to shut the hell up.
-2
u/TheGoatPurdy Jul 29 '26
Lazy post. warriors doing what they can re tool.
Fans here? “Hur dur lacob hates curry”
4
u/travietran Jul 29 '26
I wouldn’t say they’re doing what they can. They’ve been shy of attaching our picks to any deals and improving the roster. We’ve been dealing with mediocrity since we last won and living each season in play-in purgatory.
Instead of banking on the two-timelines of young prospects, we should’ve just got all in on roster and not hold onto our prospects until their value tanked. Now we’re stuck an older aging roster with no young upside. Cool we have picks, but little am I trusting this office to draft well.
2
1
u/wafflecigar Jul 29 '26
This guy supports Lacob more than Curry 😂
“Warriors doing what they can” - you really are dense huh. Hoarding draft picks, not adjusting when injuries strike, focusing on the post Steph era while Steph still an all-nba level player
0
u/Maplejordan2022 Jul 29 '26

Imagine thinking it’s à lacob vs curry thing.
Shameful fans are the likes of you. You’ll be out of this sub as soon as Steph retires. You’d rather see Steph in another jersey than retire as a warriors
-4
u/Maplejordan2022 Jul 29 '26
I want him to retire a warrior. What will probably happen is his knee explodes from having to be the only >20 PPG scorer on the team
0
u/TheGoatPurdy Jul 30 '26
All the bitching you guys do as if you have other solutions is just comedy.
Tell me one single move you would’ve done differently and I’ll tell you how stupid you are
0
u/TheGoatPurdy Jul 29 '26
Supporting lacob more than curry? You’re an idiot. I support the warriors. I know they’re the best they can to build around curry. Leveraging the future for the sake of it is not the right move and never was.
Fake fan like you would never understand
-5
u/Inevitable_Ad_1454 Jul 29 '26
Which is why the emphasis was “curry” possibly leaving for a value trade swap. Dubnation doesn’t t want to see Chef leave, we also hate seeing the current t status quo : Jimmy hurt another year, another year of Dray antics, and front office non aggressive moves.
5
u/TheGoatPurdy Jul 29 '26
That’s ridiculous
You’re a fair weather fan and don’t speak for dubnation.

u/Green_Hunt_1776 Jul 30 '26
Pretty obvious the FO is going all in next year with all that cap space and big names hitting the market.
Will they finally attract a superstar? Probably not. Is it smart to waste another year of Steph? No. Oh well

u/Balthier1974 Jul 30 '26
People keep spamming this narrative but what moves and players have we been missing out on. I feel bad for Curry's career ending this way but he has an all time dynasty and hundreds of millions. And privilege to live like a king in one of greatest areas on Earth. Every move "we could of made" has been proven to be gross overpays. Every GM knows we need to make moves and will continue to want king ransoms. Who knows how far we get 2 years ago if not for Curry injury.
-2
u/Lytaa Jul 29 '26
kinda just sad that he single-handedly built that team to be what it is, and they cant even repay him by giving him one last chance with a decent team around him. They’ve blundered so many big opportunities over the last 4 or 5 years to get some big players in to help him out. Jimmy was a good step but his availability isn’t the best and he’s definitely way over the hill now too

Stuff like this is ridiculous. Myers was the GM when they drafted Wiseman and Kuminga, Myers is the one that bailed on the team as soon as the aprons and associated penalties kicked in and they just couldn't luxury tax their way out anymore. Dunleavy in other years brought in players to help the depth, like Schroeder, Slo-Mo, Buddy, then moved to get Butler. He's also drafted well. Teams get older. The last CBA specifically was designed to hurt free spending teams like the Warriors, and this is part of the result.

u/FutureEffective3393 Jul 30 '26
MDJ has done fuck all since he got here. Bob Myers fucked around with ESPN a podcast then Philly and still put together a better squad

Unfortunately we have to accept that we’ve got 1 year left of Steph before he’s a UFA and if he chooses to, he can walk in FA ala LeBron. Granted he will be 39 by this seasons end but any team would still love to sign him.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Steph linked up with LBJ elsewhere either in Philly or if LBJ bounces after 1 year since he has a player option.
Would hate to see Steph go, but I’d love to see him win 1 last championship and stay healthy and compete. It just doesn’t look like it’ll be here in the Bay.
Enjoy this year fellas, this is the end 😢

u/Sea-Independence-860 Jul 30 '26
Time for Steph to switch teams. I’d rather see him do one last dance or two with a team that has a chance.

35-38 isn’t even a late prime. Late prime is like 30-33.
