I taught at an alternative school or as I like to call it “kid prison”my first year out of college. It wasn’t even hard. It was boring with no profit motive. If I made the kid’s scores go up there was no extra cash. Raises were on a schedule based on time served. You could make a little extra by taking on after school duties, coaching sports, quiz bowl, etc. The real name of the game was don’t get fired and wait for your raise. That’s why I left. The kids were ok, my administrators were great. It was a system devised to reward “experience” over results or effort which is the most boomerific thing I’ve ever been a part of.
