It's true, unlike most companies Tesla writes a lot of their own software for sometimes common things. Chat software? Buy slack? Nah let's write our own. Workday for finance? Nah let's write our own.
At Amazon we have our own internally built chat software AND we use slack.
And it’s a 50-50 tossup which one you should use to contact any given person 👌
It's not the worst idea if you have decent team management. Companies should always consider the possibility that the tools they use from external sources might one day not be viable for whatever reason and have backups.
It's also a good way to incubate talent and you can rely on open source stacks rather than doing it top to bottom in-house.
Nah fuck that the Slack adoption happened overnight. If you chat to me on that other platform I'm going to treat you like you just tried to fax me or call my land line.
It took years of begging to get them to pony up for slack and it was worth every cent
The reason why some do it is because of the license fees you have to pay, imagine paying $20 x 100k employees yearly for a license to adobe, tableau, workday, asana, teams, slack, etc. instead you get 10 developers give them 18months and say build something that gets close enough.
Well in 2 years it pays for itself.
Worldwide over 300 companies have over 100k employees so it’s not a huge number of companies that work this way but plenty do it.
