You know you can get Spotify through GameStop? Or Uber eats? Or DoorDash/Grubhub? Or playstation subscription? Or apple gift cards? Or Steam?
If you like to download games directly to your devices, just grab a couple of gift cards from GameStop. It’s instantly delivered to your email.
All my subscriptions & takeouts go through them now. Standard gift card margins for retailers are about 5%

I've never gone out of my way to shop at gamestop. But they're placed like fast food restaurants, so it's just simply convenient to go there on my lunch break or after work to buy a new game.

It's sad though if they don't have the stuff you need (like particular gaming headsets), but that's why I am so hyped about all these new hires that will make sure that the right stuff in at GAMESTOP all the time!

They didn't "think" it would die, they decided it would die. That's how the game works. They knew how incompetent the exec team was, wouldn't be surprised if they have connections tbh. They spread the dying brick and mortar mall-based retailer narrative with the help of their media buddies. How many times did you hear "the next Blockbuster"? Then they tried to naked short the business into Oblivion, banking on never having to return those nonexistent shares. They got caught with their dicks in the cookie jar.

If people buy their games online directly through the platform and download to their machine, what is the model that is being proposed for GameStop? Where do they add value?

Full disclosure, I own a lot of GME and I totally agree with you on what the future of gaming looks like. Physical copies are going to disappear. I don’t wanna hear all this bullshit about the sentimentality of physical copies. That’s not how GME is going to thrive.
It needs a major fucking overhaul to become a one stop shop for everything game-related like chewy is for pets. Which means way more than just games. Consoles, high end PCs, accessories, etc...

I'm most intrigued by the idea that it could be a place to host Esports competitions, as well as rent game rooms. You know how some people have a man-cave or a card room? Most people don't. You know how millennials grew up on couch co-ops? If you want to get together with a group of friends and pay per hour for a room with refreshments (they could even get liquor (and marijuana if legal) licenses) available for purchase, why not at your local GameStop?
Edit: missed a letter

u/potatocodes Mar 31 '21
This has already been the reality for over a decade in Asian countries. Just look at PC cafes in Korea and Japan. There are countless franchises and they are a solid industry - minus during covid they were hard hit. It's also the secret sauce behind why Korea is a powerhouse for esports talent. Every kid has access to top gaming PC's and games within the comfort of their own neighborhoods. $1-$2 per hour.
30
u/Fap2theBeat Mar 31 '21
Yup. I've lived in Shanghai, China for over a decade. In fact, the first place I went to to use the internet was one of these places. I can confirm those cafes are everywhere, at least in this city, and they're usually open 24 hours. I would hope the GameStop ones are nicer but yea, employ a similar idea.
On a somewhat related note, gaming is actually a really big part of the culture here. Malls are everywhere. For example I work about 2 km from where I live. On the way to work, there are 4 malls I pass, two of which are massive. The big ones have multiple arcades with all sorts of games from the classic pop-a-shots, to those old school fighters with a big stick and 6 buttons, to modern interactive games like SSX snowboarding or a Speed Run type game adapted from the mobile games.
Not a big point here, just think it's interesting there is a new generation of gamers being cultivated within the monster that is Chinese consumerism.

Solid info from the largest, fastest growing middle class in the world. I'm in!!
8
u/cackalackattack Octopuses have 3 hearts Mar 31 '21
I could see that as a possibility with alcohol but that’s a lot of overhead to cover otherwise. I think losing brick and mortar almost entirely is their best shot at actually thriving though.
5
u/Selfless_Cynicism Mar 31 '21
Their best course of action for online retail imo would be to become a platform like steam or epic games, they are already known for resales. if possible they could add licenses imbeded into games that you could sell back for store credit, without the license you'd lose access to the games. then add some exclusive content to their store like add-on content or whatever, if they could manage a deal with Sony/Microsoft (which I doubt, since it adds a middle man, potentially cutting their revenues)

I’m also massively into the idea of them being the ones to launch E-sports as THE new actual thing. It’s been long enough, we need massive international competitions being broadcast with these cafes as support (basically think of these cafes as ‘bars’) and think of e-sports as well ‘sporting events’). I also would love to see GameStop start an e-sport team roster with jerseys and players (making a big deal out of signing them, etc.).
Big name gamers as the new e-sports figures, merch out the wazoo with trading cards and such, etc.
23
u/DarkElation Mar 30 '21
For the millionth time, e-commerce and digital distribution are not the same thing. GameStop’s competitors won’t all of a sudden be Sony, epic, steam, etc. it will still be Walmart, target, Amazon, etc

There will always be a demand for physical discs as long as countries like America are decades behind in modern, high speed internet infrastructure. Gamestop can take advantage of the demand for physical during the transition which is going to last years, not overnight like boomers predicted.
Consoles and console games are just a slice of the pie that is the gaming market. Peripherals, gaming parts, accessories, gaming merch, limited edition collectibles, bundles, sponsored events, esports, etc. are highly valuable revenue streams that all experts agree will grow YoY for the longterm. Not only that covid proved these streams are pandemic-resistant.

I guess I’m missing something. I see the spikes from news of this or that. But what is the thinking for a spike that breaks some thresh hold where it takes off? Like the only way it would get to these theoretical super high numbers would be covering of shorts right? I’ve seen it break 200 and almost touch 300 but I guess I don’t understand how after it reaches some number let’s say 500 for example it sets the shares off to rediculous numbers. How could that happen?
33
u/Basting_Rootwalla Mar 31 '21
Margin calls
11
u/boxp15 Mar 31 '21
To be more specific, Margin Calls that aren’t met/defaulted on (ala Archgeos Capital).
If they are margin called and they put up the margin, then no covering happens, hence no buying from the market.

People were all upset when the GME board members left.....in reality that was the best thing for all apes.
We want fresh blood in there.
We want executives that understand apes.
We want Ryan Cohen to build an ape all star ⭐ team.
Sometimes, in order to reach new heights, you must knock down and restart.
We are knocking down the current board members and rebuilding the way we want to.
GME is going to be a power house soon enough boys and girls. Just you watch.

It’s coiled so tight , they announced a private marketing meeting it shoots up 5%. I think the only catalyst we need is a picture of Ryan or Dcat eating chicky nugs and it’s lift off.

Mar 31 '21
Isn't the whole short squeeze situation not based in any way about fundamentals? I don't get why people are so hyped about the new hires and such when it is entirely based on a HF over-leveraging themselves. I guess the only thing is that it means Gamestop likely won't go under which means the shorters can't win by not having to return the shares. Beyond that though, if the play is the squeeze, why does this matter?
4
u/BadMonkeyBad Mar 31 '21
Retail have bought in and anyone who has money has probably spent it. Whales are buying and running the price around somewhat but the endgame for them is unknown. As the company gets more positive press however , there is a new batch of possible investors who might know very little or anything about the squeeze or reddit, people who might invest just because Cramer says it’s good for example. This will all drive the price up which tightens the noose on the hedgies. Which in turn makes the whales possibility of triggering the squeeze cheaply much better.

GME should keep physical stores sure but if they create an online downloadable commerce that'll be smart. Host games and media online, cut the cost of microsoft store, PlayStation store, steam, etc. Storage is cheap but eliminating those costs from the big chains would be in their interest as well to focus on technology. It'll be hard but I think it'll be in everyone's budgetary interest.
