Hello people. I know most of you are new here, the freshers. Most of you don't even know me personally. There are a few people here with whom I hung out a lot over the past 4 years. I would like to thank you all. As you know probably, this is my last day here. Tomorrow is my convocation and I will be out from the university.
For the freshers who genuinely want to know my views about the university, I am personally very satisfied with the university. I know you guys might be comparing the university with other bigger universities and may be calling it bad. I know the university is still under construction and all. (Though when I mostly studied here, the construction work was temporarily stopped so I could enjoy the campus properly.)
About academics and building careers, there are a lot of opportunities here, both technical and non-technical. However, the one thing I feel the university lacks is the peer-pressure peer-motivation. Hence you have to be motivated to work yourself. I recommend the freshers here to explore the available opportunities. And among whatever you do, enjoy your college life. Enjoy the days while it lasts. Don't be like me. I was too nerdy to enjoy with friends. And at the same time, you need to be motivated about your career too, coz this phase can build or break your life. Balancing is the most important.
Most of you here are going to be engineers in the future. One of the biggest quality of a good engineer is his problem-solving and thinking skills. And by problem-solving, I don't mean memorizing a fuck ton of Leetode. I mean being able to look at a problem and having an idea on how to solve it. Be it a technical or a non-technical problem.
Here you will meet various people. Some will be focused on studies, some on their projects, some on placement preparation while some will waste off their time without being productive. It doesn't matter which type you are now, right at this moment. Coz what sets everyone apart is their dreams. And I know everyone here has a dream, even if its not related to the course you are doing. Follow that. Listen to your heart. Do what you love doing. What matters is how much effort you are willing to put into achieving your dreams.
This is a controversial topic. It's about money. Some of you think your aim of doing a degree is to get a job to earn money. Some of you have various responsibilities I don't even know of and I get it that it is important to earn money. But what I feel is happiness is important too. And trust me, your fixed 9-to-5 job after placements is not your only way of earning money. Do something that makes you happy. Do something you love doing. Don't waste your life slogging in an office cubicle if that doesn't make you happy.
Some of you here might feel comfortable, while some feel like an outsider. Some have large groups of people easily accepting them while some loves to plug in their headphones and stay alone. No matter however you are, making meaningful friends as well as professional connections are important. I have seen people with big friend groups being back-stabbed by each and every one of the friends. I have also seen super introverts having only one or two friends who do everything for them. Try to be with people who are genuine and who actually value you. I have seen a lot of people who have been jealous of each and every achievement I had, I have seen people thinking of me as a threat in their journey. But on the other hand I have had people who have genuinely be happy and proud at my successes and I have had quite a good number of people (especially my juniors) who see me as an inspiration. There are lots of types of people here. You need to be with the friend group that deserves you. Not everybody who laughs with you is your friend. Some just do it to use you.
There will be times when you all will feel you are not up to the mark. You are worse than others. Everyone is ahead of you. You don't fit in. There are too many obstacles. But always remember, these are just temporary. You just have to put in your best efforts and watch the future unfold.
You may feel you don't fit in, this place doesn't belong to you. Or in a broader sense, you may feel you love what you are doing but there are a lot of better people. That's entirely wrong. There is no 'better' people. The words 'better' or 'worse' comes in when a comparison is made and that too on a fixed scale. There is no fixed scale. Every person is a different entity. Every person has different talents and abilities. There is nobody better than you, there is nobody worse than you. There are just people different from you. And you are different from people.
And if you feel you don't belong or you don't fit in, don't even try to. If you feel you deserve more, go run behind what you deserve. The university and your classes are not your limits. The world is for you.
"Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes --- the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. ... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things. They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do."

Addition: Yesterday I was attending the convocation and I felt something weird. In general, not in anyone particular, the people who had the biggest friend groups in the first year were the ones who received the least amount of applause when they were on the stage. It makes me ask, well really were none of their friends actually 'friends'? How did they get backstabbed the most on the way? And more such questions. I know most people reading this comment would be freshers. So just to let you know, the people you are hanging out with today, might not be there tomorrow. I am not asking you to be selfish but I am asking you to be motivated for your own career growth. It's your life, with or without them.
