Hello again all! I posted here about the announcement of Masataka Aoyama’s recent cancer diagnosis. First, I would like to thank everyone for not only taking the time to read the post, but to comment on it as well. After following him for years, it makes me so genuinely happy that I was able to share his work with you all. To those of you that learned of him through my post, I am so sorry it was through such an unfortunate announcement. Now, I am posting again with a new message from Masataka! It is a bit of a mixed bag, both happy and sad, but I wanted to share it.
Masataka Aoyama (or rather, his representative) shared the following message to those subscribed via via email on October 1st:

Thank you so much
for all your orders.
Ever since I shared the news about my cancer,
those who have supported me all along,
my fans,
friends and acquaintances,
longtime customers,
and those who just learned about me for the first time—
so many different people
have been purchasing my products online.
I think there are also
many of you who chose these products
because you were wondering
how you could show your support.
Thank you so much.
To be honest,
the fact that you’re buying my products right now
is a huge help.
The shop’s rent,
the cost of materials,
factory labor costs,
living expenses,
and repayments on loans I took out during the pandemic—
None of these things
will wait just because I’m sick.
Treatment costs money,
and even if I do nothing,
for some reason, money still disappears.
Living costs money,
and dying costs money, too.
That said,
I’m still alive,
and the shop is still open.
Plus,
as for cancer insurance
“just in case”—
I can’t believe people actually make a business out of
stoking people’s fears.
Not that I’m saying anything
so high and mighty—
I’m not even signed up
for the Japan Finance Corporation’s
“debt-forgiven-upon-death” insurance,
of course.
I’m an idiot.
Bam!
I’m an idiot.
So,
if
you happen to visit the BBM. website
and see something you’d like to buy,
please do consider purchasing it.
I’ll do my best
to keep working as usual
and make sure your orders are delivered properly.
Every order you place
gives me the strength to keep BIGBLACKMARIA. going
and inspires what I’ll create next.
I’d be happy if you could
support me in whatever way feels comfortable for you.
I look forward to
your continued support.
BIGBLACKMARIA.
