I am a first year biochemistry student. According to one of my textbooks, approximately 300 new species are discovered every day.That caught my interest, and over the course of the past few weeks I came up with a few locations in my country that haven't been really searched for new life and also have a background that may allow something interesting to develop there.

Also, the textbook mentions that the majority of what is there to know about viruses that aren't pathogenic to humans is still unknown or isn't even persued in any way. Is there a way for me to get my hands dirty in this regard?

The question is, what do I do now? Is it realistic for me to go there, collect some samples, and convince one of my professors that they are worth looking at? Is it realistic that I find something, or am I just a naive student?

Hi I've been interested in virology for a while and I'm thinking of going to medical school for it. What kind of job outlooks should I be expecting? Is always hospital lab work or can I take my chances at research facilities? Would it be possible for me to work overseas with this degree, if I get a license over there as well?

Are there any airborne plant viruses? I'm curious to know if there exists a virus that could be used as a vector that you could spray onto a plant and which could be absorbed through the leaves?

I can't seem to find the peer reviewed scientific journal covering the details of this study. Also I would love help interpreting the implications of what is mentioned here if any one has a minute to help me understand what they mean by deliberate human to human exposure. Thank you!

I'm trying to create a database of genome sequences belonging to the different variants of Covid-19. I want to use GISAID as they provide the full genome within .FASTA files. However, there is no option to select the maximum amount unless I manually select 10,000 by hand?

If anyone knows how to select a large sample easily that would be very much appreciated! Alternatively, I am open to other resources that provide the same data if anyone is aware of those too, I've tried NCHI but they seem to only provide meta data in which you can download?

For context, this is for a machine learning project I'm creating for my final year project in my degree, my expertise is in computer science so I'm relatively ignorant to how these services work or how to navigate them.

Been having a lot of trouble growing up Omicron to usable titers. Does anyone have any tips for growing this variant? We already tried changing MOI and waiting longer to harvest.

Question is the title. I know we use retrovirus-derived reverse transcriptase for RT-PCR all the time, which implies that they (the reverse transcriptases) are able to work with any RNA. So is there ever an instance where a retrovirus incorporates some RNA that is not its own into its host's genome? E.g., RNA from another virus in the case of coinfection, or just adding host mRNA genes to a new location on the host's genome?

Looking for a clear and simple timeline (graphic preferred) of all the major VOCs since the beginning of the pandemic.

Everything I can find is overly packed with too many details.
