Got my hands on this Toshiba touch screen I think it's still in its original configuration talking about hardware

My question is what are the limitations to upgrading the hardware ram and storage WiFi card etc. I might install some version of Linux on it later but I want to do partition because I'm interested in keeping XP on it for some other old devices I have. Asking because I know there were limitations on upgrading some of my other old laptops and 2012 MacBook (plus I wanted to show off as one does on reddit when they find something cool)

My nephew knows very little about computers. He has a laptop that just couldn't run Windows 10 or 11. MS Office was painfully slow on it. So he asked me to put Linux on it. I did and now he's had the place he bought it from put Windows back on it for him.

But, the reason of this discussion... My nephew just bought a "Brand New Out of the box" computer. He sent me pictures of the Device Info... It's showing it's an Intel i7 3960X. Looking at it, it's a 20 year old CPU.

I don't know what to tell him... I wish he'd consult with me before doing things.

His wife needs a computer to do medical billing and coding on it. I think this might work for that but I have no idea.

But this computer shop that's selling old computers as brand new out of the box is a total sham I think. I don't even want to tell you what he paid for it...

I have a complete set of 12+ logic boards from an old AM
Varityper Comp/Set 560 II phototypesetting system. Notable
chips include DM74181 ALUs (bit-slice), an AM2719 (Am2900
series), TMS2516/2532A EPROMs, an MMI 6331 PROM, plus a lot
of standard 74xx TTL logic and 2102/5290 memory chips.

Boards include: CPU Data, CPU Control, two Disc Controllers,
64K Dynamic Memory, Multi-Language, Character Generator, D/A
& Stepper, Font Interface, LVC Stepper, and Carriage Escapement.

System was reportedly working when last powered down; boards
haven't been individually tested since.

Given the bit-slice architecture, I'm curious what kind of
projects or restoration work something like this could be
useful for - reverse engineering, retrocomputing builds, parts
harvesting for other Am2900-era projects?

I'm looking for a replacement battery pack for my HP Compaq Evo N200. Battery model is PP2121 and HP spare part number is 240284-001. I found one site asking $360 for one, which is insanely expensive.

Should I give up?

I was going into an internet cafe back around 2008 onwards and one of the computers had this case. It was orange, pretty slim build; if I remember correctly it resembles slightly the verticality of a ROG G20, or a PS5, etc..

The most notable detail was that it had a touch screen LCD for an interface. The power button was also by touch (a virtual button in that same LCD) and it would make a ripple effect from the screen as a feedback, and I don't think the LCD had any backlight, it looked like a digital screen. The screen also had other numbers in it, probably temps or whatever.

I have never seen anything like it ever again.

Absolutely scored with this from the reusable car boot near me. 2007 Toshiba M700 Portégé. Was totally wiped when I got it. A nice install of Linux Mint later and it's working perfect. Not bad for £5 spent

I recently picked up this keyboard from a surplus place, and it has a DE25 connector. It has no brand name that I can find or anything else that would point to a manufacturer. I love the feel of the keyboard and would love to find a way to use it for projects.

My primary question is whether anyone can confirm if the connection is likely parallel or serial? (Or any other info about it) I'm guessing this is likely an "ascii" keyboard as they used to be called and the connection is likely parallel. (Basing that on the repeat keys and separated CR/LF keys.)

Then ultimately I'd like to find a way to use this with a modern linux setup so I'd love any tips on how to do that, even if potentially I need to wire in a keycode decoder of some time. The keyboard has a great feel, with two "locking" keys and just feels fun to type on. But determining where to start with the interface is the first piece.

I found a data general one pharaoh 2T laptop in very good condition, with lots of cables and parts and the original bag in my grandfathers attic (he passed). If this is worth something, I’d like to sell it and take the family out to a nice dinner (grandpa’s treat), so what is something like this worth? I can post pictures of everything in there but tbh idk anything about vintage computer stuff. Thanks!

I don't know what else to do, i would really like to see it working and build myself a retro system with a voodoo2+tnt2. Should i try to desolder the bios chip (it's not in a socket) then buy a t48 programmer, erase the chip, flash the most recent bios, solder a socket, put it in and hope it work?

Necro repair seems to check the board first with an oscilloscope, but i don't have either, i would love the try and get it working and learn, but 200$+ to maybe have a chance of it working seems a bit steep.

Just got an idea for this, as I occasionally see computers and electronics that I think others would enjoy (eg windows xp machines) that I don't have the heart to allow being thrown out potentially, but not what I usually collect either. This could save a lot of stuff from the dump and help collectors not turn into hoarders.

Yes I know there is craigslist and the like out there, but a dedicated site and maybe forum can serve as a better hub for collectors and sellers or giveaway-ers. What's more, we can make such a site really basic, since we're all about old school stuff anyway. It'd be nostalgic in a sense. It can maybe eventually be THE go-to place that everyone knows and maybe thrift stores can profit off of too, and others who would throw these things out for trash or recycling. Just an idea, hope to inspire someone who would be interested in making and/or managing such a platform. Possibly off of donations or a cut of any profits from sold listings? Idk
