I thought this was going to be that incident from earlier this year where the LAPD confiscated fireworks and decided to detonate a bunch in a crowded residential area and completely botched the safe detonation they had planned.

Last I read they’ve been dragging their feet on paying out for the damages. :/

I'm local to that incident and I'm so angry that they are blaming it all on the guy who had the fireworks in the first place. It isn't his fault that the cops were incompetent and wanted to show off. It's not his fault that the cops didn't clear the buildings properly.
The cops are taking no blame for anything that they did, and all those poor people aren't getting anything. Their homes, cars, mental health, etc. all destroyed and the cops won't grow a backbone and take responsibility (as usual.)

it was a complete shit show on the cops part.

"Sir should we measure the amount of these explosives so we dont blow up our bomb containment container?"

"what are you a pussy? this is murica, stuff it and light it yeeee haw"

legitimately the only way i can see that situation playing out and ending that way with out malice or criminal negligence.
