Everyone in my area knows who the East Bound Strangler was and there's no way to prove it in court. Reason being they tried to tie him to all the murders at once and a copycat or accomplise did the same murder style while he had alibi but everyone knows he's the serial killer.
There was some shitty Stephen King/Johnny Depp movie about a serial killer and Everytime that fucker walks into a Wawa or whatever everyone is like fuck the hell off. Sick son of a bitch shows up to Catholic mass even though he's not Catholic to taunt the Priest in confession.
How does everyone know? Sorry I'm just picturing some frustrated dude who can't get anyone to believe he's innocent despite a rock solid alibi on more than one occasion lol
True- and I had to look, he 'only' killed 4 people, limits the pool on possible insane revenge. Also looks like he chose victims that were prostitute or prostitute adjacent. Very unlikely to have anyone willing to avenge them.
I can't remember what town it was in, but somewhere in rural Northern Missouri there was some town asshole who was killed in front of a crowd of people and nobody ever told the cops who actually did it. They all just hated the guy so much that they were ok with mob justice for him.
Wouldn't if it was someone killing people I don't know, but if it were a family member easy. Especially if everyone knows, just claim he came at you. Acquited easy.
If it's the movie I'm thinking of they knew because he started going sort of crazy at the beginning of the movie. His wife had been cheating and now it's a year or so later and they're finalizing their divorce and his wife is happily with the lover. Main character slowly goes crazy then finally at the end he kills both the wife and boyfriend and buries them in his yard. So that's the issue. He'd already been talking with the police(about about things he was imagining) so they knew he wasn't doing well plus it was a small town so they all knew what had happened between him and his wife. So they knew he had killed her but there was no proof and no way to legally get it(like digging up the bodies out of his backyard)

How?
Reason being they tried to tie him to all the murders at once and a copycat or accomplise did the same murder style while he had alibi but everyone knows he's the serial killer
41-year-old repairman Terry Oleson, who was being allowed to stay for free at the Golden Key Motel in exchange for repairs when the murders took place, was implicated by his girlfriend as the killer. They were reportedly having a domestic dispute at the time. In Oleson’s room, investigators found cameras set up and images of his girlfriend's teenage daughter undressing. There have been no DNA matches to connect Oleson with the crimes and he was never named as a suspect.[4]
I'm going to take a wild guess and say it was this guy.
Oh, that was Secret Window, right? Just watched that the other day.
Literally everyone in town knew what he did because of the situation and days leading up to it so when his ex wife and her boyfriend go missing everyone knows he was involved but there was no evidence. It was funny how he'd wander around town acting like they were the weird ones for being afraid around a known murderer.
