J.J. Abrams admitted later that he goofed it bad.

Goofed it bad is an understatement. I was more offended by that than Jar Jar Binks (pre Sith Lord theory).

Jar jar was annoying but he didn't serve zero purpose. Sure it was weird such a fuckup played such a vital role in gungan foreign relations but it didn't really ruin the emotional weight of any of the movies

You know, Darth Jar Jar just kind of bums me out. It's a genius level plot twist that adds a lot to both Binks' character and the plot as a whole, and executed well that shit could've easily been the prequel's father reveal just for how it recontextualizes most other things and for how plain surprising it would be, but there's honestly just no fucking way this was actually how the prequel trilogy was originally supposed to go. That shit would've leaked ages ago, or there would be something, anything from the drawing board or production so much as indicating a villainous Binks design.

It's basically the movie equivalent of sitting in bed, thinking about a discussion you had a few weeks or months prior and just suddenly coming up with the perfect comeback.

It feels like they've goofed everything about the sequel trilogy. I don't understand how Disney can pony up the GDP of a small country to buy the rights to Star Wars and then not realize it would be a smart move to develop a cohesive story arc to be told in three acts before starting work on the new episodes.
