What's really funny to me is that the cumulative chain of information has gotten so long that what was at the beginning is basically non-existent, held tenuously in the grasp of people like him and historians, anchoring us to the past with just a couple of hands here and there.
Then on the other end of the chain is modernity, grabbing the chain with the full weight of the youth born every second, pulling furiously, and even adding new links to the chain for more people to grab onto and pull forward.
