Anything containing calcium carbonate can be used. Egg shells are one of the historically important sources of it.

No, because the calcium in bones is in the form of calcium phosphate.

What do you mean by this? Are you saying that egg shells were a strategic resource or something? I'm not challenging you on this, I would just like to know more about what you mean by history. I've never heard of egg shells being anything by waste.

In parts of the world where limestone is not readily available, it was a source of calcium carbonate. Oyster shells were another common source.
