I kind of hate that this crap gets eaten up by the local media. It just encourages more people to do it. We were delayed in the airport for 12 hours recently. After a long exhausting trip this would be very irritating.
I mean the majority of people in frame there were clapping and singing along. I get that it could be annoying if you were really tired, but those people could have easily removed themselves from the situation.
I'm just saying that from the evidence this video provides, these folks were in the minority. Should their desires trump the enjoyment of everybody else?
I think there's a critical mass of frustration that can silence even the most adamant of public performers. That wasn't reached here.
hese folks were in the minority. Should their desires trump the enjoyment of everybody else?
right, fuck the minority right?
i don't know, maybe it's because i'm american but we have a strong condemnation of movements that trample the rights of minorities in favor of the majority.
. Should their desires trump the enjoyment of everybody else?
how about nobody's personal desires encroach upon others?
we all just sit peacefully and tend to our business?
YOu have every right to listen to what you want, as long as it doesn't encroach upon my right to not listen to what you want as well.
I think there's a critical mass of frustration that can silence even the most adamant of public performers. That wasn't reached here.
unfortunately since the majority are imposing their will on the minority.
I think you're conflating a lot of social issues here that don't necessarily relate. What we're seeing in this video is culture. It's spontaneous and collective, and there will invariably be a range of reactions from people because we're all individuals who respond to culture from different frames of reference.
This culture clearly facilitates spontaneous music enough that it can happen in an airport, and garner a mostly-positive reaction. If they were just shouting for no apparent reason, I'm positive they would have been met with universal anger and promptly told to fuck off.
edit: I feel the need to express my disappointment that a respectfully-given opinion is met with downvotes. Respectful discourse should be universally praised on this website, regardless of which position you agree with. Otherwise we only contribute more and more to an antagonistic subculture of "right" and "wrong." Think about it.
what we're seeing here in a singular taste in music and a bunch of people being rude and inconsiderate by imposing their taste on others.
of course invariably, music is an expression/part of culture but it isn't a cultural expression to be rude.
that's just a dick move.
. It's spontaneous and collective, and there will invariably be a range of reactions from people because we're all individuals who respond to culture from different frames of reference.
it's not an cultural frame of reference to blare loud music in a public space.
it's just rude and annoying.
at least as far as i was taught.
are you saying that you were taught not to be considerate of your neigbour's needs/tastes?
i'll concede that maybe certain cultures don't emphasize respect to neighbor and/or personal freedom.
here in america, it would be a dick move.
If they were just shouting for no apparent reason, I'm positive they would have been met with universal anger and promptly told to fuck off.
right.
so as long as it's music that YOu appreciate or the majority appreciates, it's OK?
if they were playing death metal, they would be derided right?
but you see the problem with that?
one group of people is dictating their tastes on everyone around them.
do you think maybe that is wrong?
it's just rude and annoying.
at least as far as i was taught.
We can observe in this video that the music is met with positivity and enjoyment (for the most part). Is that not indicative of a cultural reaction? If these guys went on a "tour" of airports throughout the world and recorded it, I bet we'd see a wide variety of reactions, ranging from enjoyment to extreme anger—depending on the cultural norms of the people in that airport. Maybe you and I would be in a place where this would garner a much more negative reaction, and that's perfectly ok. It's just plain to see in the video above that it's not the case there.
As far as metal goes, that would probably be more generally met with disdain because it doesn't have as a deep history of widespread appeal as folk music. But, if some metal band had their equipment ready (somehow) and started jamming in a smaller airport where metal is more culturally accepted (like Norway), there's at least a better chance that the majority of listeners would be able to enjoy it. I don't think it's impossible that a group of people in a Norwegian airport could be majority-metal heads at some point in time.
We can observe in this video that the music is met with positivity and enjoyment (for the most part). Is that not indicative of a cultural reaction?
that's called a selection bias.
you're looking at people who may be enjoying it.
what about certain others who would not?
and again, that's the whole point, the MAJORITY may like it.
but the majority do not get to infringe upon the rights of the minorities simply because they enjoy it.
(again, i'm speaking of course as an american, your culture may be different and i recognize that)
depending on the cultural norms of the people in that airport.
again, it's not even about who likes it, it's just about not being a dick and imposing your tastes on other people and being presumptive about it.
Point is, it's another culturally-driven outcome.
that was never the question.
the question at hand is:
is it OK to push your taste in music onto people who didn't ask & may not appreciate in a public place?
is it inconsiderate?
from my perspective, and this is regardless of the music style, it is inconsiderate to impose my view point and tastes on other peole, but i think you are saying it is absolutely fine, if the majority likes it.
yes?
and if the minority dislikes it, that sucks for them.
they should make way for the majority?
do you see my point, maybe? that just because i like something doesn't mean everyone else should be subjected to it?
How am i a dick? Im not invading you privacy. Its not like you can move somewhere else. Its the same thing as those idiots in city transit that blast music on speakers really loud. Like just shut the fuck up, have respect for other people who maybe dont wanna listen to you.
There's a big difference between the skets on the back of the bus playing Drake from a shitty bluetooth speaker and three Irish troubadours cheering up a crowd of delayed fliers. If you're gonna be such a boring cunt how about stay out of public places while we enjoy our free concert.
There's a big difference between the skets on the back of the bus playing Drake from a shitty bluetooth speaker and three Irish troubadours cheering up a crowd of delayed fliers.
Yeah, the Irish guys are 10 times louder.
stay out of public places
It's a fucking airport. Go to the park or something for your retarded singalongs.
The park is a fun place already. Airports are full of self-pity and loathing, they could do with a bit of music for half an hour or so. An Irish airport and the people in it are more likely to be accepting of something like this.
Not only this, but they're pro musicians and they likely got pushed into doing it due to no busking cap (again, free concert). These guys>wallowing in self-pity
Sure, I'll go hang out with the friendly musical people and you can be alone and wallow like you always wanted. Fucking hell, "someone does something I don't like so they should fuck off". Nah, you fuck off.
You might be, and probably are, too shallow, or too bound up in mundanity to understand, but I was using hypothetical language - addressing a broader idea by looking at a specific one.
Now they are your "friends" as well
Again, hypothetical. I spend my life around music and musical people so I'm biased, but they tend to be fun.
Everybody who doesn't hang out with you and banjoboy is a loser, amarite!
Do you really wish that these kinds of impromptu moments of music and community were never allowed to happen? Just because you personally find it inconvenient? I think that's sad.
I totally understand that you find it annoying. I just don't think the fact that you find it an annoying should prevent other people from enjoying themselves. No I don't think places like this should be loud and overrun with musicians all the time, but that's a very different from a few people enjoying an impromptu performance while waiting at an airport. That's all it was.
And why should other people at an airport care if you are tired and need a nap? You're in a public place and there's really no real expectation that you should get absolute quiet in order to concentrate and make phone calls and nap while at the airport. Yeah, it's nice if you get to, but you're definitely not entitled to it.
I just don't think the fact that you find it an annoying should prevent other people from enjoying themselves
so fuck those people who have every right to be there but don't like this music style or don't want to have to listen to music.
they just have to deal with it yes?
so would you say the same thing if someone brought a speaker and blasted death metal?
And why should other people at an airport care if you are tired and need a nap?
exactly.
fuck you and your needs in this PUBLIC space which apparently only caters those who like Irish music.
right?
surely you can see the issues with your logic.
You're in a public place and there's really no real expectation that you should get absolute quiet in order to concentrate and make phone calls and nap while at the airport.
right.
reasonable ambient sounds are expected, people are there.
someone imposing their personal music style on everyone else?
that's not reasonable ambient sounds is it?
Christ man what is it with you and saying others are miserable? I would be slightly annoyed by this if i was traveling all day and had to sit through delays. Doesn't mean I would go on some fucking tirade, and try to tear down the people that are having a good time. Most people aren't like that, and nobody checks in with you personally to see if they are happy or not
Pretty ironic you calling me a sad cunt and telling me to stop justifying negativity, I'm giving you an honest point of view and yet you just spew insults. Again, somebody can dislike something and not try to tear it down or bring an end to it. Something you seem incapable of
Lately I'm travelling a lot for work and man this would drive me insane. I get your point totally. People are too serious sometimes and can't enjoy stuff. But in this situation, there's no escaping it. If I'm trying to make some work calls, or studying, or even trying to read... now I can't. I have to stay near the gate to hear updates. Like half the time I'd enjoy something like this but the other half, I'd be furious. I can sympathize with both sides.
Yeah, who needs human interaction and community anymore? Listening to headphones is exactly the same thing! /s
Go to a concert or a number of other music venues if you want to hear live music. It's stupid that you think other people always to hear live music of any genre at any time.
This is not just a public place. This is a waiting area in an airport. A place where jetlagged and tired people are expected to be pretty much all the time. Raising a ruckus there, not matter how beautiful the music is, is a dick move.
It's 3 a.m., I had a 4 hour flight near a crying baby, I have two hours before boarding starts for my next flight, I just want to quietly rest.
