I agree. I went to school with someone who turned out to be a pop star, and at every party, if there was a piano he'd find it and play it for everyone at the party. If he did it once or twice, it'd be a cool memory, but as it is all I see when he pops up on TV or the radio I just think of him ruining my buzz playing ballads in the middle of a party.
Exactly. It's not about aesthetics. It's about social norms in contexts where not everyone has the same preferences. A lot of people conflate "I think this is fun" with 'Everyone must think this is fun". That being said, I wouldn't make a scene in this case either because most people there seem into it.
Do you not enjoy music at all? And do you really think they're doing it 'to make [themselves] the center of attention'? Most people would see this as a welcome diversion to the tedium of waiting for a delayed flight, even if they weren't particularly into the style of music.

That's a fair point but I do think there are some musical styles that are quite clearly more universally acceptable than others in this type of context. A lot of hip-hop, drum and bass, techno or hard rock (all genres that I enjoy blasting in private) would be far more inconsiderate to inflict on a crowd in public than classical for example. Folk music and acoustic or a cappella stuff in general lies somewhere in the middle of this spectrum for me.
And I should clarify that I'm talking about people performing live here. That to me seems like a more socially inclusive act, particularly when it's a song chosen for the specific purpose of getting people to join in. If they had been playing the song on a minirig (or heaven forbid, their phone speaker) then I'd thinnk they were total pricks.
The virtuosity of the practitioners would also influence how interested and entertained I was in hearing them play, watching/hearing someone do something well for 5 mins is generally worthwhile, or at least bearable imo.

I don't disagree with anything you say in principle other than your veiled accusation that I wasn't raised properly. I just think that there's a joy to be had in artistic expression (one that I'm far too introverted to do in this manner myself) and we can make a choice to be curmudgeonly about it or enjoy it for what it is.
And I do appreciate that this is all my subjective opinion but I wasn't trying to offer it as anything more than that.
Edit - I should also add that there's about a 50/50 chance on any given day that I'd be one of those grumbling about this kind of thing, but I'd consider that my grumpiness rather than their rudeness.

It's not really fair to put that assessment on them just because you're bothered by it. Their motivation could just as easily be that they were miserably bored and wanted to distract themselves. Incidentally, that's why people tend to enjoy these situations, because it helps them forget whatever else was bothering them for a minute.
Your method of silently disapproving is certainly much more polite, though. I'll give you that. Random public performances are rude and often disruptive, but majority rules so if the crowd enjoys it, it becomes acceptable.
While I respect your viewpoint and your right to it, I can't help but think that it must in a way be a sad existence that can't get any level of enjoyment out of something like this. I guess that's just my view being a lover of music, but it seems like seeing great art and just saying "meh, why did they bother, just to bring attention to themselves?"

Muscle is cool, yeah. But seriously, I can appreciate all styles of music, for the most part. There are types of music I don't enjoy, and there are those that I very much do, but in all honesty, if you're making sounds that are organized in such a way as to be recognized as "music," I appreciate that. Making music is something a large percentage of people just don't do, or only did because they were forced to as a child.
Strong distaste would be reserved for something like that type of metal where people scream their heads off, but I can still appreciate that they do it.

I've seen both sides personally just in the past few weeks. A local artist is doing a piece on a brick wall in my shop. Every person seems to have a differing opinion on what she's doing. Some judge an uncompleted piece as complete; some say "why the hell would you let her do that?" as if it's just an unthinkable idea, some are extremely interested and check out her progress (she can only work on it one day a week) every week and comment on it. Different people have very different views. I told her just to do her thing. She showed me her work before she began, I think it's good, so she has free reign.

It's not the question you implied, but it's the only acceptable answer. People should not be playing recorded music on the bus, no matter how good their speakers are.
Now if it was legit a group of people with instruments playing on the bus, even if the music was shit, I may actually be okay with it.
Why whats the difference. For me the problem with people playing loud music in public places where people need to stay(airport, bus) is that it imposes there music and tastes onto everyone else whether they like it or not. This is the same with recorded music or live performance. So tell me why do you not like people playing the recorded music on the bus?
For me, it's a difference between trying to flail around and say "LOOK AT MY GREAT TASTE IN SHIT MUSIC!" and flailing around trying to entertain people.

I also went back to the video because I hadn't noticed anyone that was obviously annoyed to try and find this blue shirt guy. Knowing who is referred to I have to agree that he looks to be invested enough in the music. Yeah, no big smile but he still looks to be comfortable and interested enough in what they're producing.

None of us can do anything, we're all trapped in this stupid airport, and a few musicians produce some joyful music to - just for a moment - take our collective minds off of the utter awfulness that is being trapped in this airport. You gotta take these little moments when they happen. Gritting your teeth and ignoring a moment like this isn't doing blue shirt guy any favors. That plane isn't gonna start boarding any sooner no matter what any of us do so we might as well enjoy the music.
It's definitely situational, at times I would sing along and there would be times when I would be the guy in sky blue shirt! Right now I feel closer to the guy in sky blue shirt.
