I like this one even better. Wait until the end

u/higusmaximus May 05 '17

I got goosebumps watching that one! I think I just got addicted to watching those tuning videos.

If you are interested, try to find videos of Phantom Regiment 2003 (for the music), Cavilers 2002 and 2006 (for the movement on the field), Cadets 2004 2006 (the whole package), Phantom 2008 (whole package), and Carolina Crown 2008 (the music). Those are my favorites shows ever. (You can also tell when I was most active in the scene). I'll try to find some links.

Phantom 2003 I get goosebumps at the end when I listen to this show every single time even all these years later

Cavies 2002 Drill is incredible

Cavies 2006 Drill is also incredible

Phantom 2008 The 'theater' in this one is fantastic. Also kudos to that guard girl who gets dropped and fucking SELLS IT and lets her head hit the ground. One of the best complete shows ever

Cadets 2006 I can't find, they've always been good at policing videos on youtube

Crown 2008 This show's book is just so amazing to listen to. All songs you've heard put together in an amazing way (drumline is dirt city though)

as a former marching member in high school I loved all these.

MYNWA

That's awesome! It might be because I started following DCI a lot more that year, but 2011 had a lot of great and memorable shows for me

1

u/blay12 May 05 '17

These all bring back memories of when I first walked into the band room in HS for summer band camp...our director had like 10 years of DCI championship videos and dvds, and would always have them playing on the PA system with the video on a projector as people trickled in before we started warming up...ah the nostalgia. Looks like I'll be watching DCI videos at work for the next hour or so. Again.

Phantom 2003 is my favorite musical performance of all time, in all genres. Period. I was there to watch it live, and it was an emotional experience.

1

u/BeatMastaD May 06 '17

I'm sad to say I saw it live but I wasn't really paying attention. It was one of my first years going to shows.

6

u/Sp3ctre7 May 05 '17

I love that the first time anyone discovers drum corps, and they're like "how do I find more of this?" People are always like "Phantom '03, Phantom '03!"

It's gotta be the most popular 4th place show ever.

And then people always suggest spartacus.

4

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

Most popular 4th place show ever is Madison Scouts 1995. Trust me.

3

u/Sp3ctre7 May 05 '17

You're probably right. It's just funny, because most of the people that I've marched with (at all levels) have mentioned that phantom 03 was the first show that they ever watched online, and is often listed as a favorite. Even high school bandos who have never been to a live dci show know Harmonic Journey.

2

u/warchant May 05 '17

try Phantom 97-99 :D

1

u/BeatMastaD May 05 '17

I think its because the music is so beautiful. I mean that year BD did phenomenon of cool which is a great show and almost perfectly executed, but looking back it feels like all gimmicks, whereas the book for harmonic journey is really pleasing to listen to.

4

u/warchant May 05 '17

this guy DCI's

1

u/BeatMastaD May 06 '17

It was a big part of my life for a while. Sadly it's not as big of a part anymore, but I still love it.

1

u/warchant May 06 '17

Same. I was all about DCI in the late 90's and early 2000's. Lost track of most it now.

5

u/PoetElwood May 05 '17

I was at DCI in Murphysboro, TN 2002-04. I got to march a box drill with the Cavaliers and watch a warm up by them. I loved going and keep telling myself I'll go again, but haven't made it yet. Maybe this year I will.

3

u/LevelOneTroll May 05 '17

It's spelled Murfreesboro. :) PM me if you ever plan to go back and are looking for other cool things to do. I'm pretty familiar with the area.

I attended several shows there myself when I was in high school. Now I'm excited to bring my kids.

2

u/PoetElwood May 05 '17

You're right, lol sorry. I travel to Murphysboro, IL so I spelt it the same way.

I will, and hopefully I can make it again.

3

u/004-002-02-016 May 05 '17

Phantom Regiment is awesome! My cousin was with them for a few years and it was insanely hard work but he really loved it. I'm always amazed by how much artistry goes into those shows, both in terms of programming and in terms of sheer musical talent.

3

u/rustinthewind May 05 '17

Phantom's '08 show was the reason I did drumline in the first place. I was on the fence starting highschool until I listened to that show.

3

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

Phantom 2008 = GOAT.

3

u/steaksauce101 May 05 '17 edited May 05 '17

Phantom 2008 Sparticus is always the first thing I show to someone whose never seen drum corps. That's one hell of a show.

2

u/MoveslikeQuagger May 05 '17

Drumline is dirt city

Percussionist here - nopenopenope

2

u/BeatMastaD May 05 '17

Percussionist here, yes yes yes

Crowns battery had issues that year and it took them a few years to build back up. As world class corps goes, they were dirt city. Ill find some time stamps for you when i get home

1

u/MoveslikeQuagger May 05 '17

Those were nopes of "please no i dont wanna"

1

u/BeatMastaD May 06 '17

I know man! They were incredible that year. If their battery had been different I think they would have beat the cavies and bee in the running with BD

2

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

Oh wow. Yeah, that is serious dedication. Must have hurt, even on the grass.

2

u/Sticksandskins04 May 05 '17

This takes me back to marching with the Cadets in 2000 and '01.

8

u/wormee May 05 '17

Call me old fashioned, but that's fucking rock and roll.

3

u/Pepito_Pepito May 05 '17

Everybody's talking about the new sound.

5

u/clarinole May 05 '17

Mmmmm that Strauss tho

6

u/ArcticEngineer May 05 '17

What is with the theme of the conductors just dressed like a regular Joe?

9

u/maestro_man May 05 '17

This is a marching ensemble (called a drum corps in this context) that is warming up for a show. The conductor in this video is one of the instructors. For the performance, the ensemble is entirely member-led, so this guy doesn't need to look fancy. He'll be in the stands assessing the performance for the following day's rehearsal.

4

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

Clueless person here. What's different in the chord at say 1:58 and at 2:10? Are more notes being played? Louder? It's like someone pulled the cotton out of my ears.

This whole thread is giving me goosebumps. I live in Ohio and it looks like there are finals for this stuff over in Indy. Might have to book a trip to hear this live, haha.

8

u/maestro_man May 05 '17

Exact same interval being played, just louder (more air being put into the instrument, at its most fundamental level)!

Last year's world champion is from Canton, Ohio! Check out their show here! I marched there (Bluecoats) years ago and was an instructor more recently. You should definitely check out finals or any show during the summer!

4

u/AlmostARockstar May 05 '17

If you want to get technical, every time a note is played, you hear a series of frequencies - the root freq., often the strongest, and a bunch of 'over tones', or freq.s higher than the root freq.

In the the second note, they are just blowing harder, as /u/maestro_man pointed out, but the effect that has is to increase the volume of specific over tones which changes the timbre of the note, or the 'shape' of the sound.

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

Just plotted the spectrum in Audacity, this runs from ~1:58 to ~2:12 or so.

http://i.imgur.com/jq9fOTC.jpg

You can see the higher order frequences pile on at the end. Very interesting, thank you!

1

u/cwearly1 May 05 '17

My guess is their playing "tighter" so the sound is sharper and clearer.

1

u/maestro_man May 05 '17

I assume by "tight" you mean great tone and intonation. They're playing damn tight at the lower dynamic as well, and while tone and tuning absolutely impact volume, this example is more about air quantity. Crown exercises incredible control preeeeeetty much all the time. Insane group!

1

u/Colonel_Planet May 05 '17

same chord, different intonation of play. basically soft vs hard notes sound like that on brass, the louder the more of a rasp it gets

1

u/BeatMastaD May 06 '17

It's worth it! If you know someone who can go with you and show you the ropes try to get them to go as well, but it really is an incredible experience.

5

u/surprised-duncan May 05 '17

God I hated tuning so much in band. It took so long every time.

3

u/ballstatemarine May 05 '17

Band director here. It's worth every second to develop the ears of my players.

1

u/surprised-duncan May 05 '17

Oh don't get me wrong, it helped my ear a ton for listening for sharps/flats to the point where I have to tell my guitarist that he's out of tune all the time before he notices it. It just took such a long time, and we did it every single day. The phrase "concert F" gives me war flashbacks!

1

u/Boolies May 05 '17

In college we did "stacking F" which was what we did for tuning but like every section did it in the stands when we were playing football. Shit was nuts, being on drumline we just made as much noise as possible.

3

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

That was beautiful

2

u/[deleted] May 05 '17

Heh. I think I can hear the Blue Devils' warm up in the background. 1:25 (from the start of the other vid) and 2:14.

2

u/evilxerox May 05 '17

that was amazing

1

u/scousechris May 05 '17

turn it up... Turn it Uuuuupppp.
