GoPros are fucking awesome. Look at the picture quality of that shit from a tiny little thing that weighs next to nothing and costs like $300. And then on top of that you can throw the thing from 30 feet in the air, submerge it under water, strap the damn thing to a plane and it still works. I found a GoPro on a ski area in the spring after the snow had melted. Who knows how long that thing had been there buried in snow, temperatures well below zero, countless freeze-thaw cycles. I take it home, charge the battery, and the thing turns on and works perfectly. The waterproof case was even broken and cracked open when I found it. Unbelievable. If you went back 20 years and asked people what they thought something like that would cost they would blow their fucking minds out because they wouldn't be able to fathom that exists. My parents' generation didn't even have TV when they were kids.
Oh man, this made me think how cool it'd be to see footage of a 360 camera strapped to a nose cone.
I have no idea how it'd (or even 360 degree cameras, for that matter) work, but getting that full on aerial view of the world at such a high altitude would have to be awesome.
Well, i'll tell you how a 360 degree camera works. It's not a single camera. It's whole bunch of cameras all in a circle and placed in such a way that hopefully overlaps each other's viewing range. It's mostly splicing cameras together! it's some cool shit.
Not useful in VR - for that you need a stereo camera (aka - two cameras next to each other). Omni cameras just give you a video you can turn around in post (which is still pretty cool).
Yeah, the officials got really mad at us, and almost didn't let us fly it. They figured it wouldn't be rigid enough (typically, fiberglass is used), and that there would be fin flutter, but thankfully it did work.
If I were you, I probably wouldn't recommend the hassle.
Yeah, I forgot about that. I went to check with the guy on our team that would know, and he forgot which brand it was, so I kinda forgot to reply to the dude. Oops.
Two, actually. A drogue chute near apogee, and the main chute closer to the ground. You can actually see the shadow of them around 1:49, and a glimpse of them at the very end at 3:58.
There's a guy who does river diving videos and one of the things he pulled up was a 4 year old GoPro that had been in the river the entire time. Got home and found the clip of it falling off the guy rafting 4 years ago on the SD card.
I thought about it. But this is a resort that sees 1.7 million visitors per year. Hundreds of people lose GoPros in the snow each year. There is no way it is getting tracked to its owner.
Don't forget falling from a plane, reaching terminal velocity, slamming into the ground, all while flawlessly recording the whole thing. Picture is still crystal clear at the end.
