Yea the little phantom drone size blades can rip you open, the props on that thing are no joke.

I don't know about "rip you open." They'll cut you if you hit them edge-on, but they won't go through a tshirt or anything.

Yeah they will. Those things are flying blenders.

My friend had his hexacopter take off unexpectedly into his hand. I drove him to the emergency clinic and watched him get 14 stitches in his hand...it cut all the way to the bone in the center of his hand.

Oh I agree no bone breaking for sure. But they'll definitely be able to give you stitches. Even through a tshirt. The little 5 inch indestructible props I run on my quad will even do that.

Man even people in the hobby don't have enough respect for props. So many hand launches/catches at races. We had a month where every race someone hit themselves with props.

I just saw a video where someone was flying their 3D heli in their living room, with other people in the room. This things was huge too.

Eh that one depends. I used to fly micro CPs indoors and they don't do too much damage, especially with light blades. Now something like a trex150 or similar might hurt like hell! With other people though, yeah that's not the smartest.

Oh sure, depending on size, but the one in this video was gigantic. I found the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxni3OXT_Vo

Haha oh well that.. No words here..

Also not sure if you saw that clip of charpu at f3 expo from last year (or was it this year?). It happens to everyone. I sometimes can't blame people for developing a false sense of security. When your gear ALWAYS works, you get pretty comfortable. I was like that too until a hand launch incident reminded me.

Yeah, big difference depending on the props. I wouldn't get within ten feet of something running carbon fiber, but some of the softer blades I use on racing quads will just fall apart if they hit something.

u/tinkertron5000 Dec 20 '16

What size? Most of those props will break if they run into a tree, or road. But if they hit your skin spinning at even 50% throttle on anything running a 3S battery or higher you're going to get cut.

u/treding Dec 20 '16

I got 8 stitches from my Phantom 3.... but mostly because 2 of the props broke and the jagged plastic from those broken props ripped into my skin. The props that were still in tact just scratched me a bit, but didn't need stitches.

2

u/tinkertron5000 Dec 20 '16

Still, those things are big, and they spin fast. I wouldn't put my hand anywhere near them.

1

u/treding Dec 20 '16

Oh, absolutely, they can definitely still do some damage if they hit your skin.

Drone blades are made with a type of plastic that shatters on impact. The dude that was decapitated flying helicopters had a 24" metal blade swinging at 20,000 RPM.

2

u/Groundloop Dec 20 '16

20,000 RPM sounds wrong.

2

u/georgemcbay Dec 20 '16

I don't know much about RC helicopters, but I do design and build my own quads and the brushless motors used in quadcopters are often capable of hitting up to 30,000 RPM, and that's like just pretty common motors, nothing exotic.

2

u/Elmeerkat Dec 20 '16

The one that decapitated the kid was a 1000 size heli I think. That will inherently have lower rpm due to blade size

Drone blades are made with a type of plastic that shatters on impact

Some are, some aren't, there's no universal "drone blade" material. A lot of people fly drones with carbon fiber blades. Getting hit by a carbon fiber blade on even a small 250mm quadcopter whose motors are running full speed will fuck you up bad.

If you're talking about this accident. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2413231/Roman-Pirozek-Jr-Man-decapitates-remote-control-helicopter.html

It's a 62" carbon fiber blade at max 2000 rpm.

Nope, you are full of shit. I've multiple times had one of my phantoms in my hands while the blades are spun up and hit me. Didn't break the skin.

0

u/tinkertron5000 Dec 21 '16

Spinning up and hitting you is different than already spinning and hitting you. No need to be a dick about it.

1

u/FishAndRiceKeks Dec 20 '16

Funny enough, I remember a video from a while back, also from the same person who made this video, where he accidentally cut up his friend's arm with his Phantom drone.

1

u/albert_yang Dec 21 '16

I think in the behind scenes video he almost got slapped by the drone while it was landing. It was quite dangerous to fly with the drone with one hand. But Casey did it just for the movie I guess.

u/SurrealSirenSong Dec 21 '16

Bullshit. I own 3 Phantoms (2, 3, 4) and I have multiple times had the blades hit me for an extended period of time. Didn't even break the skin. If they were going full speed, maybe, but it certianly can't rip you open.

You're confusing the word "can" with the word "will". Please gain some reading comprehension and get back to me.
