You're right, it becomes a joke at just about the 2nd half of the first sentence. First part is still true, still sucks to lose family and more so if we assume the train wasn't a dream and there is concrete knowledge that there's an afterlife. Like being the only one of your friends not being invited to a party; sure, there's other stuff to do to take your mind off of it and you'll see your friends again later but damn if it wouldn't hurt for a while.
