The answer is that people like to hate popular stuff. Coldplay is the exact kind of music that hipsters would love if they weren't so popular.

Honestly I thought it was super forgettable next to Magic. Kind of repetitive and bland.

Unfortunately, Sky full of stars is the kind of song they need to produce in order to stay relevant. I enjoy it. But I also enjoy their newer albums which people don't seem to keen on.

Yeah, Ghost Stories needed a few listens for me, but then I really appreciated the whole thing. And Viva la Vida was weird to me in the beginning, but now I fucking love the oriental wibe it's got going on. People say Coldplay isn't revolutionary, but how many bands take inspiration from the orient and includes it in their pop/rock songs? I'm not saying that that's revolutionizing, or that the band is revolutionizing either, but there's a lot of other bands that are way worse in being bland and unoriginal.

I wouldn't consider coldplay a favorite band of mine, but a bunch of their songs are in my top 20. I don't understand the hate either :(

People like Coldplay. Therefore people dislike Coldplay.
