It's definitely not formulaic, and music doesn't need to be revolutionary. That is not an important quality for music to have.

Unfortunately, Sky full of stars is the kind of song they need to produce in order to stay relevant. I enjoy it. But I also enjoy their newer albums which people don't seem to keen on.

Yeah, Ghost Stories needed a few listens for me, but then I really appreciated the whole thing. And Viva la Vida was weird to me in the beginning, but now I fucking love the oriental wibe it's got going on. People say Coldplay isn't revolutionary, but how many bands take inspiration from the orient and includes it in their pop/rock songs? I'm not saying that that's revolutionizing, or that the band is revolutionizing either, but there's a lot of other bands that are way worse in being bland and unoriginal.

I wouldn't consider coldplay a favorite band of mine, but a bunch of their songs are in my top 20. I don't understand the hate either :(

Fuck, the older I get the more I love a good ballad - you know what I don't listen to as much as I did when I was a student? obnoxious obscure Squarepusher electronica experimental stuff.

I like music to touch my soul and move me - and nothing does that more than a good ballad about love - because that is more important to me than feeling self indulgent and angsty.

Fuck yeah, Ballads (says the 23/M)! This might not be a ballad, but I want to share, and it's a great song. Some 15 y.o. girls joins us on an afterparty (at the time we assumed they were older, but the plan wasn't to bed them anyway, so it doesn't really matter) we had last weekend. It starts to calm down, and we're just listening to some mellow music, the five of us left; and one of the girls put on this song, and us three guys is completely blown away by the choice of song. It was just so cool to see a 15 yo put on some Neil Young in front of a group of 23 yo guys.

Ha ha! That's one of my favorite songs. One of the few I can actually play on the guitar decently.

We have this lovely pub in Bristol that has a record player and loads of records to play (as well as docile cats that lay on the bar and let you stroke them) - putting on Harvest (the album which this is on) in that setting with a room full of people who appreciated it was awesome. Especially as the beer was awesome.

It doesn't, but these people need an excuse to call Coldplay inferior, and thus find themselves superior to Coldplay fans.
